Jay Carder’s unique blend of UK bass, techno and breaks has seen her come into her own in 2022 and we’re super excited to welcome her for Tapes #82.

This year she’s had sell-out headline shows in the UK and further afield in India and Istanbul; as well as debut sets at Glastonbury, Gottwood, Westival and London’s Fold. A true lover of radio, Jay covers a length and breadth of sounds on air, from club bangers for The Dance Show on Rinse, to UK bass for Kaizen on NTS, and underground Indian trip hop on Soho Radio.  

Jay Carder’s unique connection to the dance floor is key to her energy and ethos. She started her promoter/DJ journey 8 years ago throwing events with collective 4 To The Floor London, which attracted house dancers, hustlers, b-boys, voguers, waackers and other dance styles from Paris, Japan, Berlin and major dance cities from around the world. She is now a resident and promoter for Birmingham-born, London-based Voyage events, and runs her own club series ‘House of Carder’, which has seen sold out shows with Bruce, Breaka, Dr Banana and K-Lone.

About the mix

I’ve been thinking about a concept for a mix titled “As the city sleeps” for some time. Soundtracking one of my favourite times of day, between 4-5am, the witching hour, when you fall in love, spend time getting to know the things about your friends you never knew and when towns and cities feel like your own.
When I was asked to contribute an hour of music to the inaugural “Monolithic Installation" (more info below), an immersive light installation in Bristol at Motion this summer it was the perfect catalyst to finally record the mix. I have gone back in and worked on it since and am happy to share it with you now.

@midland: “With this mix I wanted to try and capture the sound of me in the club during a long set in the part of the night when you and the crowd are locked in to a groove; a time when you’re able to make left turns, but it feels totally natural. As ever unreleased records sit alongside new records alongside records that came out 10/20/30 years ago. I definitely wanted to build to a more electro/rave crescendo in the middle of this, and try and plot a course through some broken stuff towards the end. I really enjoyed recording this one!”

PLZ Make It Ruins boss Vegyn has just released his debut LP after a run of singles on his own label, as well as working with the likes of Frank Ocean and Travis Scott. Here we see him pull some of his favourite tracks and go-to selections when playing live. 

"Playing a DJ set is so temporary that there's not much room for analysis. However, the permanence of an online mix is to me more akin to that of a tattoo - It's gonna stay with you forever! With that in mind, I tried to step away from modernity and instead have chosen tracks I find myself still listening to even after all these years."
