The Tunnel Rave - Techno Mix - 2019

Canadian label Echo Locations enlists Berlin-based producer Svedstorm to explore the stylistic depths of uptempo dub techno with "The City Where It's Always Night."

Originally from Copenhagen, it was here that Svedstorm was introduced to dub techno at an early age through artists like Lulu Rouge and the legendary Echocord label. Although he's produced different genres under various aliases in the past, the groovy melancholia of dub techno has continued calling to him.

On "The City Where It’s Always Night," he presents three different flavours of his beloved genre along with a remix of the title track by fellow Berliner Volpe.

"Neep Noop" highlights the genre's affinity for subtlety and sparseness. A progression of muted bells and echoing synth stabs places the emphasis on the track's low bassline, making this an offering primed for big bass bins and intimate settings.

"On Land" explores the melodic side of dub techno with layers of harmonizing instrumentation. Atmospheric background melodies and fleeting pulses of synthesized sounds come together with bouncy hi-hats and a deep kick to create a warm and hypnotic soundscape.

"The City Where It’s Always Night" presents a gritty take on the genre with raw kicks and snares reminiscent of garage. This addictive beat remains the focal point of the track as delayed chords weave in and out, creating a charged atmosphere of minimalism and serenity.

Volpe takes the title track in a more stripped-down and housey direction, opting for a slower tempo and a deep organic bassline. The echoing chords are stretched further apart, creating a sense of spaciousness over the driving force of crisp hi-hats.
