"I never thought that much about ‘health care systems’ until my daughter was born in 1996 on England’s National Health Service. My partner and I had been living in NYC, but lacked health insurance, and couldn’t get any because pregnancy was a ‘pre-existing condition’. The cost- not including (pre-post natal care) at NYC hospitals was $16,000 “if everything went perfectly”: we didn’t have it. My partner was from England, and her mom lived in South London, so off we went. 

Lewisham Hospital isn’t in a rich area, and it wasn’t as squeaky and new as some in the US- but the care was great: they had a better licensed mid-wives program than any I’ve seen.  both midwives, nurses, (and even the doctor!!!) visited us at home both before and after the birth. And it was all free. 

My daughter was born at around 2am after a difficult labor, and the next day my partner was having trouble sleeping in a room with other moms and babies. So, I asked if it would be possible to get a private room. I misinterpreted the nurse’s quizzical expression, and quickly added, ‘oh don’t worry, we can pay for it’... At which point she stiffened her back and raised her chin in the way only an English nurse can, and, looking at me with a combination of pity and disgust, replied: “ sir, we have no private rooms. We have single rooms, and they’re available based on need, not ability to pay. If your wife needs a single room, i’ll make sure your she gets one.” 
When I thought about it, something clicked in my brain. How could we have ever even thought of doing things differently?

The National Affordable Care Act is, unfortunately, no NHS and neither is perfect. But I wonder if any of the Republicans ranting about ‘socialism’ have any idea of what it is that they’re willing to blow up the economy in order to avoid. And so I wrote this little tune. (even libertarians can dig the rhythm section groove ;-)"

Moderator has a new EP coming up. The producer from Athens with almost ten years of experience will soon release the jazzy In The Garden, which Saudades is extracted from. The song has been made in collaboration with the Portuguese duo Serushiô. Together they blended their musical wizardry and beat-making to create a cinematic atmosphere, almost Tarantino-esque that will transport the listener to a smoky black and white vision.

Stop what you’re doing. Lovers of soul, funk, and all the other good grease need to get on this 45 real quick. HopeStreet Recordings brings you a collaboration between Australia’s hottest soul voice, Nai Palm, and Australia’s heaviest rhythm section, The PutBacks, on that classic, classic joint Spanish Harlem. The Worm, a typically heavy PutBacks instrumental on the flip rounds out two smokin’ sides of Burn City soul.  

Jerry Leiber and Phil Spector wrote Spanish Harlem for Ben E King in 1960, but it was Aretha Franklin took it to number one in 1970. In 2013, The PutBacks and Nai put it down one more time on 8 tracks of tape with the production team at HopeStreet Recordings and you sure can take that sucker home on wax, but you’d better be quick. After all – this release has been 50 years in the making. 

The B side on this record is for the B boys. The Worm baby. Lots of songs fade out, but how many fade in? Yeah. That’s real. This kind of lowdown funky break is what the PutBacks really love to put the back in. Ouch. Will someone sample this already so it can go for longer than three and a half minutes?

This record is raucous and rich in the rawness. The drums, bass, and percussion gallop through Spanish Harlem and swagger through The Worm. The guitar and organ howl and huff. Simple production lets the musicians do the talking, and boy, Nai Palm can shout. Sweet layered harmonies over a dirty minimal rhythm track. It’s a new thing, it’s an old thing, it’s a limited pressing and it’s yours at www.hopestreetrecordings.com.

Izabo - life is on my side

I was born and grew up in New Jersey. My mom still lives there. My brother Doug works for the state of NJ as an electrician on the highway system. When he started telling me how the state had stolen his pension, I couldn’t believe it was legal. The state got people to work for decades by promising them a pension, made them pay into the plan every week: and then essentially stole it (at least that’s what I call it when you borrow something and never give it back). But apparently that’s how they do things in Governor Christie’s New Jersey. And the Federal Courts have refused to intervene. It may be legal, but it will never be right.  Don’t know what I can do to help, but I started by writing this song:
“Something’s Rotten in the State of New Jersey”.

This remix is one of the first productions I did since completing my album "Instinct", so it has plenty of similar references. Yet, with it I was already exploring some new territories within the world of haunted groove music. Based on the song's title, I imagined one of the main streets of Tel Aviv in its darkest and emptiest hours. A kind of contrast, full of urban demons, to the image of the "city without a break".

I've known Ryskinder for nearly a decade, and we even tried to collaborate, so when he asked me to do a remix, it was a special challenge. Around the same time I was watching various vampire films by Jean Rollin, so it very much inspired me to take the remix in a horror direction.

Ever since CRuNCH 22 introduced "Cairo" in their live shows, it became one of my favourite numbers in their repertoire. Once given a chance, I set on a mission of taking the band's simple tight groove on a mind-melting trip. Like with my every previous remix, this was a chance to expand my palette and try new ideas. The real challenge here, however, was to build a larger new sonic world on top of recording that was already very full (even though it's just drums, keys and turntables). The result is an explosive mixture of a lot of stuff that I've been into recently - a long and trippy sound exploration journey, squeezed into four and a half minutes.

Fortuna Records brings you one of the rarest, most exotic recordings to ever come out of the Middle East. This lost and forgotten record is the true meaning of east meets west and is bound to leave you craving for more.
In the late sixties, Israel had a large Yemenite community in which original folk artists started blending western instrument into traditional songs. The biggest name of the time was the innovative Aharon Amram, who was the first to introduce electric guitars, bass, Farfisa organs, and drum kits to traditional Yemeni rhythms, conventionally played by tapping fingers on an olive-oil tin can. Tsvia Abarbanel and 'Piamenta's Guys' took a few steps ahead into the unexplored territory of Yemenite jazz. The synergy between Albert Piamenta, one of Israel's leading funk and jazz arrangers, and Tzvia Abarbanel with her extraordinary voice and haunting melodies, is something like Mulatu Astatke meets Yma sumac. The strange rhythm patterns, the enchanted performance of the musicians and the amazing voice of Tsvia all come together to create a raw and unique style, capturing the sound of the warm desert wind and its glowing dust.

I'm a huge fan of Kip as a songwriter and musician and we've been friends for many years. So, when 3421 asked me to do a remix for their first song (with vocals, I mean), I didn't hesitate much. At first I wanted to do an all-psyched-out heavy remix and give it a Silver Apples sound, because I often call the guys "the Silver Apples of the bass generation", but Kip's writing is so melodic that I just stripped the song down to lead vocals alone and let them guide me to the new arrangement. I was listening to a lot of space age pop at the time, a lot of pre-Moog stuff from the early-to-mid-60's, so I gave the whole remix this feel of science-fiction-to-become-a-reality romance of those years.
