King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard: Black Tooth

This remix is one of the first productions I did since completing my album "Instinct", so it has plenty of similar references. Yet, with it I was already exploring some new territories within the world of haunted groove music. Based on the song's title, I imagined one of the main streets of Tel Aviv in its darkest and emptiest hours. A kind of contrast, full of urban demons, to the image of the "city without a break".

I've known Ryskinder for nearly a decade, and we even tried to collaborate, so when he asked me to do a remix, it was a special challenge. Around the same time I was watching various vampire films by Jean Rollin, so it very much inspired me to take the remix in a horror direction.

Mordy Laye and the Group Modular - Electric Paint

Ever since CRuNCH 22 introduced "Cairo" in their live shows, it became one of my favourite numbers in their repertoire. Once given a chance, I set on a mission of taking the band's simple tight groove on a mind-melting trip. Like with my every previous remix, this was a chance to expand my palette and try new ideas. The real challenge here, however, was to build a larger new sonic world on top of recording that was already very full (even though it's just drums, keys and turntables). The result is an explosive mixture of a lot of stuff that I've been into recently - a long and trippy sound exploration journey, squeezed into four and a half minutes.

This remix is the first production I've done after me and Mule Driver completed the Mordy Laye album, and I think it was very much inspired by this exciting project. When I started working on it, I only had the first part in mind - until the breakdown of the first verse. But, the more I was listening to the female vocals -  the more they brought images from science fiction in mind: Rene Laloux' animated classics, like "La Plente Sauvage" and "Gandahar"; movies like "Forbidden Planet" and "The Andromeda Strain"; Ray Bradbury's "The Illustrated Man". Even when I decided to bring in synth solo part I still couldn't imagine that this will be the result - it all just happened spontaneously.

Jerusalem-based musician/producer/DJ/turntablist/crate-digger and music archivist, Markey Funk is a staple of the Israeli groove scene. Starting off as a Hip-Hop and Funk DJ, Markey's musical palette has grown constantly wider and deeper throughout the years, embracing everything between Folk, Psychedelia, Early Electronic and Library music from around the world. While being famous for his explosive Soul-Funk-Psych-Groove DJ-sets, he’s also known as a freak of the 1960′s style, cinema and counter-culture. Besides collecting records and playing them for happy audiences, Markey has been writing and producing his own music for more than a decade: from hip hop beats, through fully sample-based debut album, to remixes for a wide variety of local artists. Recent years also saw his first globally distributed releases on vinyl: sitar-beat 7inch single under the moniker Les Hippies and the concept space-age groove full-length album "The Mystery of Mordy Laye", based on unfinished recordings by an anonymous local band from the late 1970's.
