Me and Hideo rock-in' it out, good old spontaneous jam style, in fun-fun-fun mode. Nothing's better than a live jam...I l-i-v-e for it! In case you might be wondering, the far off distant psychedelic vocals are in fact deliberate...I tried to create the picture that we are up in the cosmic realm among the planets and stars jamming it up oh so blissfully, trying to please the Gods, the universe and all who dwell within. We are physically so far away from one another yet spiritually, we are so near and ready...ready to give you the instant magical vibrational feeling. At least we hope we're doing that. @phil-mcwalter approached me to ask if I’d like to do my own version of his song, https://soundcloud.com/phil-mcwalter/i-can-see-all-of-you-1 . He was keen that I used my own words, although I explained that I wouldn’t be able to match, let alone improve on what he had done. I persevered and once I found the mood I wanted to occupy, the words came quickly. Phil’s original version, if my interpretation is correct, appears to be from the perspective of an all-seeing/omnipotent being. Whereas the anxiety and tension I felt in the music led me to the perspective of someone who is all-seeing, via our various modern communications and information systems, yet simultaneously wholly powerless to change anything and gradually becomes insane. The beauty of writing something like this is that it doesn’t necessarily have to represent your own personal ideas and beliefs. I’m a little bit cynical in real life but nothing like this (honestly)… Feel free to take what you want from my diatribe, but only with a pinch of salt.

Hugely indebted and honoured to get to work with Phil on this. A very liberating experience that let me think outside of the box. Cheers Phil.

When Procol Harum’s ‘A Salty Dog’ was released in 1969, I was just seven. My Damascene moment came when an enlightened teenaged neighbour introduced me to the album of the same name when I was 12 and my life has never been quite the same since. Many people will have heard ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’, although few people will be as familiar with this equally beautiful and unforgettable song. The band Procol Harum is recognized as an influential force in the development of Progressive Rock, but for me the thing that makes them stand out is Gary Brooker’s unique voice. Often their lyrics are unfathomable, for example “We skipped the light fandango, Turned cartwheels ’cross the floor”, but always sound credible given Gary Brooker’s warm and authoritative delivery. 
This is one of those songs that should have a warning label saying ‘Don’t Try To Cover This – It’ll Only End In Tears’ but with Graham Lavallin’s confidence and wonderful support we persevered. However, I then had to find a way of making this my own as no-one can touch Mr Brooker’s version. I was honored when https://soundcloud.com/graphicsontelevisions asked me to remake ‘Tattlesnakes’ from their fantastic album ‘Pun’. Maybe it’s the wildest one, unpredictable but coherent, it inspired me immediately !!

Tardigrade & Tattlesnakes (with Graphics on Televisions)

"Shoot Out The Lights" is the result of an open collaboration my good friend Stefan (Rock Flexible) put out around near enough three weeks back now. It's the first in a short series of NoNameYet songs of Playback tracks inviting singers to have a bash and write some lyrics and a title for and sing it.

Well having heard Stefan's great track and great work it instantly appealed to myself and totally rocked that much I decided to have a go at it myself. I had some free time to get to work on it this week and squeeze it in between some of the other collabs I am currently working on. 

For my interpretation for this one I decided to go dark and evil and do a bit of Satan Rock regarding the lyrics I wrote. There was a section I did not want sing on or write a couple more verses, so I decided to throw in my own little lead break on the guitar. Though that is perhaps a bit boxed standard as the lead guitar is not my forte one bit.

Lee Lucas & Rock Flexible - Shoot Out All The Lights

My idea for the subject matter came from Dan saying the music made him think of mountains and water. In my head I made a leap to a human story I knew of a mother and son who waited for much of WWII at a tiny seaport (Kyle of Lochalsh) in the North Western Highlands of Scotland to occasionally see the husband/father who was on mine sweeping missions with the Arctic convoys. Life expectancy was 6 months but he returned safely. This story would work just as well as a scenario for a fishing village where all the men had been gone for days during a storm.

I can't thank Dan enough for his inspirational piece that triggered these words and likewise Dick made this sound so emotionally charged with his fiddle and harmony vocals. I am greatly indebted to my collaborators for making this possible with endless patience and skill.

Hot on the heels of 'By The Water's Edge', Dan came up with another maritime sounding arrangement that he was keen to share with Dick Vestdijk and myself. The original music was very inspiring and my immediate suggestion was on the theme of 'impressment' - the press-ganging of sailors into naval service against their will. No sooner had I suggested this than Dick had drafted a great start to the fine lyric we have now. I added a verse then Dick completed the lyric and delivered a guide vocal that took my breath away. I thought we should leave it at that, however we all continued to work on multiple versions with a variety of arrangements and vocal set-ups. What we were seeking was something organic and natural sounding, as if a couple of sailors were singing in a tavern about their life at sea, surrounded by other impressed seamen. The quality of musicianship, imagination and patience that Dan and Dick brought to this continues to astound me. As well as their generosity and skill, they really are great guys to collaborate with. I look forward to many more projects.

Like "The King's Shilling Will Be My Lot' this song started with a maritime theme from Dan, to which Dick found the highly original subject of Napoleon's jailor on the island of Saint Helena. There are conspiracy theories (rumours of arsenic poisoning, etc) about what really happened in Napoleon's last years, although both sides of the story are well documented. Another song to add to our collection of 'Songs from the Sea'. As before, Dan offered a slow celtic air, which had such a beautiful melody that it felt like a 'boat song'. I was inspired to write a lyric about the herring fishing industry that was once so important to so many nations. Dick and Dan added some more lyrics, then the tempo had to quicken to convey the joy of the fishermen returning home and once it had all three of us singing, it began to really take shape. This song was different from most of our other collaborations in the way it developed. It started from a lyric for almost all of the song from myself, which Dick added to, especially in the chorus as well as coming up with the music and vocal melody. Dan came on board later with backing vocals and more instrumentation as well as the final mix.

When Lee Lucas posted a collaborative version of this song before Christmas https://soundcloud.com/lee-lucas/lee-lucas-mark-j-bennett-the-parting-glass, he suggested that I put out an open invitation for anyone to collaborate with the original stem. Of course, I appreciate that grafting any type of arrangement on to an acapella vocal track isn't easy but I'd welcome any approach. This is an Irish traditional song but it may well withstand a modern arrangement. The vocal stem has lots of reverb and echo on it but should you need a drier stem to work with, just message me and I can send a naked version. Also feel free to take some liberties with this should it lend itself in any other treatment. 

I raise my glass to those brave enough to listen to me tightrope-walking and also to those who might consider taking on this challenge. Cheers!

The Parting Glass - Open Collaboration

First track of a new album where I'll try to be more eclectic, with closer approach to some genres. Experimented on this one over-editing vocal line on the left, and getting midi files out of organic guitar melodies, which I could play with virtual instruments. I hope you'll enjoy a different Ruizzoid shape.

Dedicated to Germán Coppini’s ‘Golpes Bajos’, one of my favorite groups of the Spanish ‘Nueva Ola’.

'On Your Knees' - Rock Flexible & Sleepingenius

„Peg“ appears on The Dans famous album „Aja“. The song represents a very typical example of their sophisticated songwriting. An Intro with a jazzy chord-progression, a verse following the Blues-scheme, a call and response chorus with gorgeous backing vocals leading into a section, which reminds a bit on Bach („when the shutter falls“). In the center an exemplary guitar-solo (Jay Graydon).  The unbelievable perfectionism of Fagen and Becker is shown by an anecdote about the guitar-solo. Seven top session-players like Larry Carlton and Robben Ford were burned during the studio-sessions until Jay Graydon could convince with the final version. In my opinion „Peg“ is one of the many highlights on „Aja“.

The lyrics could be influenced by a tragic Hollywood-story: In September 1932 Peg Entwistle, an unlucky and unsuccessful Hollywood-actress jumped to death from the „H“ of the Hollywood-sign in Los Angeles. Her name became a synonym for the dark side of Hollywood and the whole era.

As usual I arranged this song in the notation-software „Sibelius“. Then I set up the Cello with VSL „Solo strings“, at last I recorded the two violins and the viola live. 

Instruments used: Violin „Anton Piegendorfer“ built 1902, Viola from AaKe violinmakers Bad Homburg (www.rhein-main-geigenbau.de/aake/contente.htm); VSL Violoncello from „Solo strings"

Recording notes: Because the viola was too sharp the last time I used the three microphones in the opposite order, the viola was recorded with the darkest mic. I used the sharp Condenser for the second violin to give it an extra push against the dominant first violin. The mix worked much better this way.

Bill's Note: True to form Melissa nailed this vocal performance in two takes! The high "classical" sounding parts were mic'd overhead. That type of vocal performance causes a lot of interference with a close mic'd setup due to the volume, mass of air and sound that is moved.
In this recording I tried to emphasize also Will's cymbal work which to me adds to the magical nature of this piece. 
The first seven notes are given to us by Serj Tankian and his "7 Note Challenge". That motif then returns to represent the passage of time. The chord progression is loosely based upon Irving Berlin's "What'll I Do" which really seems fitting considering the subject matter.
The place is "The Point" - a park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where the Allegheny and the Monongahela meet to form the grand Ohio River ...it is a place that I believe is magical and so I created this story.

Sixty years ago, mankind's space adventure began.
Happy birthday, SPUTNIK!

When this song came to my ears as a first playback I knew that I only could add acoustic guitar to it. First, to keep it's sensitive feel, second to add a kind of acoustic contrast to the electronic set on it ... So what you hear now has developed over several transitions. I have already worked earlier with Katja, a classical and pop singer, so we asked her if she could imagine to write lyrics and sing on the song. The demo originally was titled 'sputnik'. Quite often Katja keeps the first impulse, studies the background and then she unfolds a story around the topic very well. It was a honor to work with her in this song. 
The composition and complete processing of this song was done by Ralf Wadephul, years back playing keyboards in the famous electronic group 'Tangerine Dream', so this song got it's fantastic sound from his production skills.
The Drums and Grooves were contributed by Peter Pasch, a well known studio drummer in the Berlin music scene. Ralf and Peter, both form the group OESJ.
I hope you enjoy this little tune as much as I do!

I feel blessed to be able to keep Alpha Roots’ vibe shining bright for the SoundCloud community to continue to enjoy. 

Alpha Roots sent me these reggae bass and rhythm guitar stem a long time ago, maybe even three years ago in 2016 (bad couch, bad couch)! I originally planned on having Evelyn (of the Reiki Run Rampant tracks on my page) sing over the rhythm but then I moved from Santa Cruz to Portland and she moved from the Pacific Northwest to Santa Cruz, bummer! So the stems sat in my hard drive until new inspiration arrived in the form of Johnny Minstrel, one of favorite song writers on SoundCloud, agreeing to write lyrics and sing over the track. Once Johnny added his deep felt lyrics and magical vocal chords to the mix, the rest of the song came together pretty quickly for me, lol! I often try to put together virtual bands for my tracks and I knew I had to have Jamie Rhind on the track since he worked with Alphio on multiple songs and a reunion was due. I always wanted to work with Jonathan Beckenstein, whose sensitive and thoughtful guitar work is always sublime. Darren and Russ came naturally.  My original drum production work was based on an old Sly Dunbar sample (I like to include the essence of some of my favorite artists in the tracks I work on) but the quality of the drums just wasn’t up to Russ’ standards, hahaha, so we brought Bitzone on board to lay down some drums and voila, roots reggae magic!

Big thanks to the band for coming together on this in fine fashion! Big ups to the SoundCloud community and the spirit of collaboration. Keep on digging! 

And massive thanks to Wou-Wou to bringing his visual arts talent to the project! My goal is to eventually put together a reggae album (possibly a double album which will also include some reggae collaborations between Alpha Roots and friends including Jamie Rhind and Russ Sinfield) with all profits going to the Cancer Research Institute. Be on the look out for a possible dub version of Red Earth Clay as well!!!

The other day Uwe asked me for a collaboration and if I could 'help' him to finalize a very old song of him. Sure I was interested and so I got his Logic tracks, made my own mix of the song and added some guitars, minor efx and tons of plugins to the tracks. After sending my first proposal, Uwe asked me to change and tweak some elements he found important to his original composition. E.g. I changed the rough synth in the beginning dramatically but he wanted to have it simple and rough. Also with the blend of the sax after the chorus he insisted in his original levels which I switched back or tried to level like in his original draft. 
When the song was finished in March 2020 it took three additional months till Uwe finished the Blender video he had in mind for the song. I sent him two brief video snippets of me playing the two soli - which he cut into the video as well ... 
All in all it was a very satisfying collab work with really cool results for the song and the video! I have to thank Uwe much for asking me!

I've been making music for around 16 years now but because of the wonderfully generous community that is SC, I have learned so much in a short time. I look forward to learning even more by collaborating.
