SHEA Radio #079: The Hacker

Michel Amato's contribution to electronic music can barely be overstated. As TheHacker, and under different aliases, he has inspired generations of dance music fans and artists. Since his first release in 1996, Amato had a Techno phase, dipped into EBM, sci-fi tinged Electro and New Wave, but is perhaps most famous as a founding father of Electroclash. He met a kindred spirit in Miss Kittin and together they became of one the most iconic duos in electronic music, with hits such as 'Champagne' (1998) and 'Frank Sinatra' (2000) selling hundreds of thousands of records.

In 2004, Amato released his most well-recieved album to date, 'Rêves Mécaniques', and the years since witnessed Amato put out a wide array of club mutations on many leading labels, including a double LP for his own label Zone.

Today, he is as in-demand as ever, with a highly-acclaimed album, 'Le ThéâtreDes Opérations' landing on Dark Entries in 2017 and contributions to tastemakers like Helena Hauff, Erol Alkan and Veronica Vasicka's labels since. In the live and DJ environment, Amato is as revered as he is on record, playing high-profile events such as Dekmantel, Berghain, Nuits Sonores and Off Sonar.

When it comes to techno, electro, and more importantly Electroclash, few can argue The Hacker’s credentials. The Frenchman was instrumental in the formative years of these movements and being active since the mid-90s has meant his discography is positively bursting with pivotal moments from electronic music. It is nearly impossible to discuss The Hacker without mentioning Miss Kittin, with some of their work such as “Champagne” EP including seminal tracks “Frank Sinatra” and “!982”. This is of course only a small, but not very important part of The Hacker’s story. With a string of solo albums and countless EPs to his name, the cross-section of electronic music that The Hacker enjoys is wide. BALAM is a musician, producer and DJ from Buenos Aires, Argentina, after a long time working with his indie dance band that allowed him to play in many countries and festivals around the world, he gets all into his new solo project as producer and DJ “Balam” focusing on techno, disco, shamanic beats all produced and recorded in his studio combining real analog synthesizers, like modular synths, moogs with guitars, real and weird percussion sounds creating a unique atmosphere making every track a voyage through the latin american jungle.

At the moment he has two releases, “Chaman EP” released through french label ESTHETIQUE RECORDS (FR) in March 2018, available both digital and cassette, and an “Senderos de Selva” out on April 24 through PLAYGROUND RECORDS (BCN/ARG), plus remixes and a track for the Take Away series for the prestigious label Calypso Records from Iñigo Vontier and Thomas Jackson, a track coming soon for the new Spanish label United Colors of Rhythm, plus remixes for labels like Innisfallen (MX), Control (MX), Nein (UK), Emerald & Doreen (Gr).
In June 2018 he made his first USA mini tour with 2 gigs, one in the prestigious Brooklyn, New York radio “The Lot Radio” and the other one in the well known SAMO Records Night at Jupiter Disco, Brooklyn, New York.

Now he is planning his first Mexican tour with confirmed dates in CDMX, Toluca and Puebla plus more to be confirmed.

His work had been supported by artist like Thomas Von Party, Tronik Youth, Golden Bug, Perel, JP Soul, Curses, Rodion, Freudenthal, Thomass Jackson, Veneno, Clandestino, Local Suicide, Theus Mago, Roman and Castro, Marcos in Dub, James Rod, Colossio, K-effect, Man2.0, Connor, Gabriel Ferreira, Timothy Clerkin, Shit Happens, Owls at Down, Vverses, Facets, Dany Nijensohn, Shubostar, Iñigo Vontier, among others.
