Simon Doty remixes JODA feat. Robyn Sherwell’s ‘Closer’, out now on Anjunabeats.

2022 was a big year for Jono Grant and Darren Tate, aka JODA. Grant is one-third of Above & Beyond who, throughout a two-decade career, have established themselves as one of the biggest electronic groups in the world. In 2019, Above & Beyond received an offer to score an environmental documentary, ‘The Last Glaciers’. He enlisted classically trained musician, songwriter, producer, hitmaker and close friend Darren Tate, and the duo got stuck into composing together.

It became a dream project all around – not least because it sparked further ideas. JODA was born. Working in Tate’s studio in suburban north London, and A&B’s south London HQ, the pair were in a creative bubble during the early days of the pandemic. And the partnership proved fruitful. Their self-titled album ‘JODA’, celebrating the musical influences that Jono and Darren grew up with, was released on Anjunabeats in August 2022 – to a rapturous reception from the Anjunafamily and beyond.

Canadian DJ and producer Simon Doty recently dropped his chart-topping debut album ‘Universal Language’ on Anjunadeep. His remix of JODA feat. Robyn Sherwell’s ‘Closer’ was a standout feature on the record, standing alongside collaborations with American spoken word artist Ursula Rucker, British duo My Friend, legendary American vocalist Roland Clark, and more.

Crafted for the dancefloor, Simon’s debut album gives the audience a taste of the range of musical styles that they can expect to hear Simon play during one of his DJ sets. 'Universal Language' has gained radio support from BBC Radio 1 presenters Pete Tong and Danny Howard, SiriusXM and KCRW as well as a host of DJ tastemakers including Gorgon City, Diplo, Nora En Pure and more.

JODA's self-titled debut album is out now, and is available to pre-order on black vinyl from the Anjuna Music Store.

Lamenta eleni silmë was born out of a desire to capture the fragility and beauty of an ephemeral moment, like the light of the stars on a deep night. When I composed this piece, I wanted to create a bridge between the past and the present, between ancient traditions and the modern soul. Each note and rhythm was carefully chosen to transport the listener into a state of deep tranquility, where time seems to stand still. At the same time, I intended for this piece to be a lament of sorrow, a cry of grief that brings comfort to those facing loss and sadness.

I chose Quenya over Sindarin or any other Elvish languages because Quenya is the language of the High Elves, those who lived in the blessed realm of Valinor, closest to the divine. It carries with it a sense of purity, timelessness, and a deep connection to the origins of Elven culture. Quenya’s lyrical and ancient beauty felt like the perfect medium to express the ethereal and almost sacred nature of this lament. Unlike Sindarin, which is more commonly spoken in Middle-earth and has a more earthly tone, Quenya evokes a world of fantasy, filled with mystery and nostalgia, adding a timeless dimension to this creation. The female voice, echoing as if from another world, is meant to soothe and provide solace, while the traditional instruments, such as the cithern, add an organic, almost ritualistic texture.

I wanted the listener to feel enveloped by an inner warmth, a light that guides them through a chaotic world. This piece is an invitation to introspection, a chance to lose oneself in thought and find a moment of peace amidst the tumult of daily life. Lamenta eleni silmë is more than a melody; it is a song of lament for those seeking inner light, a moment of breath in an ever-moving universe.

I am also offering the lyrics in Quenya, along with their approximate translation in English, for those who wish to delve deeper into the meaning behind the music.

Hey guys, so this song, Blame Me, is really personal for me. It’s about that emotional struggle we sometimes go through when we feel blamed or burdened by a relationship that's falling apart. I wanted to write from a space of vulnerability, where the emotional weight feels real—where you start questioning yourself, wondering if it's all on you or if you're just being made the scapegoat.

Musically, I kept it raw and direct to reflect the heaviness of that feeling. The production blends a mix of R&B and pop with some electronic undertones, allowing the emotion in my voice to take center stage. I didn’t want to overdo it with production; instead, I leaned into a smooth groove that carries the mood of frustration and sadness.

When I recorded the vocals, I wanted to make sure you could hear the ache and the strength at the same time. It’s like saying, ‘I know this is painful, but I’m also not going to let it crush me.’ That balance was important for me in the studio.

I hope Blame Me resonates with you guys, especially those moments where you feel like you're being unjustly held accountable for something in a relationship. Let it be a reminder that it’s okay to stand up for yourself, even when it hurts.

Hello loves, my new track Impossible" is all about confronting those overwhelming feelings and moments that seem like they might break us but instead, we push through. I wanted this track to feel intense and intimate, like a conversation between me and each of you. There are points in the song where the melody soars and dips, mirroring that back and forth struggle in our own minds. You’ll hear a bit of vulnerability mixed with resilience, and that’s what I hoped to capture the rawness of working through things that feel, well, impossible. We form a bond like seaman on the ever-changing Seas of life. The wind shall not carry us anywhere but where we wish. This is our Epic Journey!

This is our Monumental ode to those who came before us and those who will come after. This is the story of how we got here and the overwhelming circumstances we each effort to force our way through . We have experienced extreme heartbreak, tough task masters, a difficult job, injury, illness and a plethora of more circumstances to overcome.

We've made it to this day and to form a band of fellows on a ship sailing these rough seas. Wherever our souls shall lead us. The power of our spirit romantically condensed into lyric and song on our adventures. "Aye aye, Captain Bligh" is the song that describes us. And it defines us. And it elevates us all at the same time. Although past heartbreaks have tied the albatross to our necks, it's never mind the wing in our eye that is symbolic to overcoming our obstacles and being who we are despite any challenges or circumstance.
