Madrotter -our man in Bandung, Indonesia- treats us to a new mix with music culled from his vast collection of original Indonesian cassettes and record releases. This time he focuses almost exclusively on the Gambus genre, with tracks from around the sixties and seventies. 

The term Gambus in an Indonesian context covers, by and large, a music genre that takes its name from the homonymous instrument Gambus, as performed by the Indonesian people. The Gambus is a fretless bowl lute chordophone instrument that is widespread in central and southern Sumatra, Indonesia. The instrument is related to the Yemeni Qanbūs, which is in turn comparable to the Oud. The Gambus was passed on from the Muslim world to the Malay world, although it's unclear as to exactly when it happened. 

Ex-Rotterdammer Madrotter is a devoted music collector and archivist who has been living in the outskirts of Bandung, Indonesia for around 25 years. He is the curator of the amazing Madrotter music blog which is chock-full of great music from across Indonesia.
