"Matasuna Records" is back with new Latin fire on 45, presenting two songs from the band "Phirpo y sus Caribes" by Venezuelan musician, arranger and conductor "Porfi Jiménez". Both songs were released on the band's only album "Parrilla Caliente" in 1972, whose original pressing is a very rare and sought-after masterpiece. Officially licensed by the family of the late musician.

The A-side is a brilliant Afro-Latin cover version of the song "Comencemos (Let's Start)" by Afrobeat legend "Fela Kuti". Jiménez arranging talent is clearly audible here, compressing Kuti's 8 minute version to just over 2 minutes. The result is a highly explosive mix which may without a doubt be considered one of the best Latinfunk songs. The ingredients are extremely spicy: heavy drum breaks & percussion, horn madness and wild guitar interludes will surely hit dance floors!

The song "Mi Moooto" on the B-side is an original composition by Jiménez. A beautiful example of how Jiménez combines the traditional salsa music of his orchestra with versatile influences like rock, jazz or funk on the concept album from 1972, experimenting and creating something new and great. An essential release for any groove enthusiast.


"Porfi Jiménez", whose real name was "Porfirio Jiménez Núñez", was born in 1928 in Hato Mayor del Rey in the "Dominican Republic". He began his musical training at the early age of 9. After studying at the Municipal Academy of Music he became a member of an orchestra at the radio station "Voz Dominicana". Its director "Enrico Cabiatti" introduced him to the art of arranging.

Due to the Trujillo dictatorship, he left the country in 1954 and went to "Venezuela", where the young musician became famous as a trumpeter and played in the most important groups of the time. The quality of his original arrangements opened the doors of the most famous record companies of the time in Venezuela. Porfi also became one of the most outstanding composers and arrangers of those years, rebuilding Cuban "José Pagé's" Cuban label "Velvet" in Venezuela and working for all the label's national and international singers.

At the end of the 50's until the beginning of the 60's, he worked in orchestras of various TV stations in the Venezuelan capital Caracas. In 1963, Jiménez founded his own orchestra, which became known as one of the most important musical groups in Venezuela throughout Latin America.

In the 70's, musical transformations resulted from the emergence of new musical styles & rhythms. Porfi Jimenez, as a contemporary artist and passionate jazzman, began to incorporate new musical elements into his songs that distanced him from the prevailing commercial style. This resulted in the album "Parrilla Caliente", which was released as the band "Phirpo y sus Caribes" and remained the band's only album. The production, practically unknown, allowed him to experiment and express his artistic creativity, distancing himself from the traditional style of his dance orchestra.

Salsa music and its orchestras lost importance in the 80s and were displaced by new music. However, another Caribbean rhythm filled the gap: the "Merengue", which triggered an international boom. Porfi also embarked on this path, releasing an album that immediately catapulted him back to fame. It was a period in which he received numerous awards, such as two gold and one platinum disc.

Shortly before his death, on June 9th 2010, Porfi Jiménez managed to realize his lifelong dream: the formation of his jazz big band, with which he performed at numerous festivals in Caracas. With it, he left an important musical legacy, with several original compositions and arrangements of the most prominent names in jazz history. In 2007, Porfi Jiménez was honored by the "United Nations" as one of the most outstanding musicians of the continent.

Mash & Munkee are Kolja Starkowski (aka Deli-Kutt) and David Hanke (aka Unifairfly/Renegades of Jazz) and are based in Wuppertal and near Hamburg, Germany. Kolja was DJing and David was running a radio show before they met online at the record database site Discogs and, after discovering a common taste in music, teamed up to form Mash & Munkee. The rest, as they say, is history!

After a series of well-received singles on labels such as Backslide, Jack To Phono, Funk Weapon and of course Hero Records they spent time compiling and remastering the best of these releases and writing new tracks to compliment them and ended up with this amazing debut album. Taking musical influences from all over the world this album contains the straight up funk of the single “Superbad” and the scratch-filled b-boy grooves of “Here We Come!” together with afrobeat and latin influenced groovers such as “Kibo” and “Venga Veras”. From downtempo hip hop head-nodders like “Mexican B-Boy” to the faster tempos of the dancefloor-filling nu-funk of “Make A Difference” this album encompasses all that we at Hero Records love about music. In September 2019 Matasuna opened the treasure box and reissued two rare original versions from the Peruvian band "Bossa 70" for the first time on 7inch. With the new release, two more songs from their popular self-titled album will be officially reissued on a 45. The songs were transferred from the original master tapes and got a new mastering.

Matasuna invited the US-American DJ & Producer "Retro Roland Riso" to put his hands on the original versions to create two reworks, which are suitable for today's dancefloors. Roland is almost a veteran of Philadelphia's nightlife and can look back on a 20 year career as a radio host, promoter, DJ and producer.

Think on the A-side is a great cover version of the same named song by Souldiva "Aretha Franklin" from 1968. "Bossa 70" gave the song its own touch and in their instrumental version they put the focus on the brass parts, bassline, wild guitar solos and an upbeat rhythm. Retro Roland Riso's rework puts even more pressure on the song, creating a bomb for the dancefloor!

"Get Out Of My Way" on the flipside is another fantastic cover version of a fabulous Latin/Boogaloo song of "Joe Torres" from 1967. The Retro Roland treatment remains true to the original arrangement, but he spices up the song in his Regroove with a big dash of breaks and percussions. Another weapon for every DJ bag!

"Nilo Espinoza Vascones" or better known under his artist name "Nilo Espinosa" is without doubt a Peruvian saxophone and flute legend. After a classical musical education he entered the music scene in the early 1960s. In 1966 he founded the band "Los Hilton's" with some of the best Peruvian musicians including the gifted piano player "Otto de Rojas". In 1967 they recorded the first and only LP of the group, which was released in a small edition in Peru.

Their concerts were more and more influenced by Jazz and Bossa Nova, so in 1968 they changed the band's name to "Bossa 70". In the record label's office Nilo met the Afro-Peruvian "Carmen Rosa Basurco", who also loved Bossa Nova and could sing in Portuguese and English. From then on she was the main singer of the band.

"Bossa 70" recorded four songs for a 7-inch EP in an edition of only 100 copies, which was given away for promotional purposes at concerts and to friends & family. In 1970 they recorded their self-titled LP which reflected a mixture of Bossa Nova, Latin Jazz and Funk. The label pressed only 300 copies, which were sold out very quickly. This LP was the band's only album and is a rare piece of Peruvian music history.

Matasuna Records starts the new year 2020 with a brilliant release, featuring two contemporary tracks by Paris based Afrobeat band Batunga & The Subprimes, available for the first time on vinyl.

Batunga & The Subprimes was founded in Paris in 2009 by musicians from different backgrounds, united by the will to mix traditional African music with other elements (Latin, Jazz, Second Line and even Rock) and to bring this explosive mix on the streets & on stage. After many shows all over Europe and beyond, their first official album Man in the Field was published in 2017, followed by their EP Let dem In in late 2019. Matasuna has chosen two extraordinary cuts of these self-released albums to release them on vinyl for the first time.

Gates Of Ouantou from their EP is a great tune that sets the bar for contemporary Afrobeat and has all the ingredients for a timeless classic: the arrangement, the instrumentation and the interplay of the seven musicians in the song are excellent and will immediately draw you into its spell. A real gem and great tune!

Man in the Field on flipside is a cut of their first official album. Unusual is the use of a banjo in an Afrobeat song but not surprising that this fits in very well and also shows that classical structures can be broken up and developed in a new approach/context. Another great piece of this extraordinary band that has been operating under the radar - until now!
