Michael Plater is a U.K-based Australian experimental/folk/psych/indie/noir musician and multi-instrumentalist. His first two solo albums “Exit Keys” (2012) and “Mythologies” (2016) received world-wide critical acclaim, with “Mythologies” being re-released in expanded form in the U.K in 2018 through cult British folk/psyche/drone label Reverb Worship. In recent years, he has also released music on such labels as Hypostatic Union (U.K), Dub Cthonic (U.K), Woodford Halse (U.K), Hibernate (U.K), Laily Recordings (U.K), and More Than Folk Records (France).

Michael has also played in the U.K-based dark folk ensemble GhostShips, the ambient project Ghosts of Electricity, the Gothic soundscapes act The Northern Lighthouse Board, Melbourne garage rockers The Exit Keys, and folkloric collective Cornish Wreckers. 

His acclaimed new solo album, “Ghost Music,” is out now on Hypostatic Union.

From an early age, music captured my imagination. My brother John was a big influence always playing his guitar, singing, and inviting me to join in the songs he loved. In school, I discovered the drums, and when my teacher formed a rock and roll band, he asked me to step in as the drummer. That moment lit the spark I was hooked.

After life took me in different directions, I found myself back on stage, drumming for a one‑man show. The experience reignited my love for performing live and reminded me why I fell in love with music in the first place.

Eager to explore new sounds, I auditioned for the country rockabilly band Saltillo Road and to my delight, I got the gig. Performing with Saltillo Road not only boosted my confidence but also opened the door to singing and backing vocals, expanding my role as a musician and deepening my connection to the craft. One of the highlights during this time was the opportunity to open for Jason McCoy, an experience that underscored how far my journey had taken me.

After many shows and years with Saltillo Road, I eventually parted ways, yearning for something different. I became the drummer for The Sumo Puppies, which later evolved into the Michelle Ives Band. With them, I had the chance to play some incredible shows alongside talented musicians who pushed me to grow even further.

A few years later I auditioned for the Michael Granka Band and earned the spot as drummer. Playing with this group introduced me to a wide circle of gifted musicians and opened doors to new roles, rhythm guitar, vocals, and drumming with The Sunny Slope Bootleggers as well as opening for Marty Stuart & his Fabulous Superlatives. Ten years of unforgettable shows and experiences followed before another move took me to a different city.

Today, I no longer have the privilege of playing with my brother John, as he has since passed away. Still, I continue to get together with two original members of The Sumo Puppies, Sean Ross and Duane Rivait, keeping that musical bond alive. Based now in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, I focus on my home studio, where I play all the instruments and produce music under the name Crushing Buttons a project that lets me channel every part of my musical journey into one creative outlet.

"Ghosts of Electricity" is a soundscapes/experimental collaboration between Australian musicians Dean Richards (Disturbed Earth, Whirlywirld, Equal Local) and Michael Plater.

Their name “Auramics” was inspired by Daphne Oram's "Oramics Machine," which the two connected to in their interest of drawing/art, cut up collage sound and music, "Aura" relating to metaphysical practices and "Aural" in regards to hearing.
