Originally released on Eskimo Recordings' 'Yellow Collection', Middle Sky Boom & Eliezer's 'Slow With The Run' has long been a secret weapon for those DJs that like to take a break from the 120bpm bangers and give the dancefloor a bit of space to breathe and get freaky. Now those who have kept the faith are rewarded as Eskimo have dipped into their back catalogue, dug out the parts and invited Swedish producer Paresse and Parisians Il Est Vilaine to rework the track in their own special ways. 

Having impressed with his 'Sloth Machine' EP Stockholm based Paresse is first up to the plate. Keeping the basic structure in tact, Paresse opts to gild the original rather than embark on any wholesale changes. Building his remix around a mesmerising synth loop that he develops and builds upon across 6 minutes, Paresse delivers one of those numbers that locks you into its hypnotic groove and then before you know it your hands are in the air and you're bellowing 'TUNE' at the person sweating away next to you. 

Il Est Vilaine meanwhile rewind Belgian history to a moment long before Eskimo had been born and the lowlands reverberated to the martial beat of EBM and New Beat. Nudging down the tempo, Il Est Villaine pair the original's Arabesque guitar riff with the kind of heavily gated drums and synth arpeggios that would have set the strobes off at Boccaccio in the 80s.

Capping what has been another vintage year, nu-disco star Tim Bernhardt, aka Satin Jackets, sees out 2018 in style with 'Lost In Japan', a cover of Canadian star Shawn Mendes' recent mega-hit. Featuring frequent collaborator Niya Wells ('Primordial', 'Never Enough') on vocals, the pair have transformed the pop smash into a smooth slice of late night disco.

"We'd just finished recording our last single together 'Primordial' and were knocking around some new ideas," Tim explains. "We'd talked about doing a cover so Niya played me the new Shawn Mendes single and as soon as I heard her sing it I was sold. It's always interesting to try and put your own spin on someone else's song, especially one that's been as popular as 'Lost In Japan', but I think together we've managed to give it a fresh take."

Having previously featured on Eskimo Recordings' 2018 compilation 'The Purple Collection’ as one half of Languages, Franz Matthews returns to the label alongside fellow Berliners Local Suicide with 'Meditation / Tutan Jamon', 2 tracks of heady disco that join the dots between the German capital and the sun soaked souks of North Africa.
 
Despite living on the same street for 4 years Franz Matthews and Brax Moody and Vamparela from Local Suicide only met recently through their common friend Sam Berdah (Days of Being Wild, Club Bizarre). Making up for lost time, the trio soon found themselves bonding in the studio, digging into their love of both the esoteric and travelling, and together channelled those passions into 2 spiritually infused numbers.
 
'Meditation'was the first result of this inspired partnership, appropriately recorded at the same time that Matthews was also recording music for a meditation app, and features a freeform stream of consciousness from Vamparela over a suitably hypnotic backing of wistful guitars and breezy rhythms. 'Tutan Jamon' meanwhile shares its DNA with recent Eskimo releases by the likes of Simple Symmetry and SHMLSS, the track built around a couple of very Egyptian influenced riffs and comes in two distinct versions.
 
Between his production studio MOWD, his duo Languages, and his solo electronic project, Franz Matthews keeps himself busy. Making Berlin his hometown for the past 5 years, the Franco-German producer and DJ has always kept one hand in the Indie Dance world, while the other wanders in more Psychedelic Pop realms, a winning combination that's seen him release music on imprints such as Eskimo Recordings, Days of Being Wild, Rockets & Ponies.

Satin Jackets feat. David Harks - Shadow Of You

‘Solar Nights’ is the long awaited second album from German nu-disco star Tim Bernhardt, aka Satin Jackets. Released on Eskimo Recordings this April, ‘Solar Nights’ follows on from Bernhardt’s critically acclaimed, and Gold certified, debut LP ‘Panorama Pacifico’ and features 14 tracks of smooth disco and leftfield pop sounds with guest appearances from the likes of Future Classic’s Panama, David Harks, Niya Wells, Emma Brammer and Anduze.

The global success of ‘Panorama Pacifico’ has seen Bernhardt coaxed out from his remote studio in one of Germany’s ancient forests to play to fans across the world, from South Korea to Mexico and beyond, experiences that inspired both the album itself and its title, ‘Solar Nights’.

“In recent years the world’s become smaller, a more inter-connected place. It can be dark and cold here, with snow all around, and the next day I can be playing to people on a beach. Somewhere on the planet it's always daytime or summer, but beyond that day and night just blend into each other these days,” Tim explains. “We have daytime discos so you can go and party while the sun is still high in the sky, and you can go and hit the gym at night. Be it day or night, Satin Jackets is your soundtrack.”

And what a soundtrack it is, from the first chords of opening ‘Welcome Back’ it’s clear we’re in safe hands here, the warm pads, delicate guitars and pianos providing the perfect introduction to the album. Whether it’s the slow burning seductive pop of tracks like ‘Just Like You’, piano led house tracks like ‘String It Again’, the Balearic haze of ‘All For You’ or bonafide hits like the Nordic inspired ‘Northern Lights’ and ‘Mirage’ that between them have already scored well over 10 million streams across streaming platforms, ‘Solar Nights’ takes everything we loved from ‘Panorama Pacifico’ and polishes it to an ultra high sheen.

And in an age when rough and raw production is seen as an easy shorthand for authenticity, Tim’s love of über-smooth production has made him an unlikely iconoclast, “I had always been fascinated by how glossy people like Nile Rodgers made their music,” he reveals. “It always sounded like the musical equivalent of a fashion magazine’s cover. I’d been making more underground music for a while but really wanted to go in totally the other direction and instead create a really smooth, polished sound.”

That obsession with sonic fidelity shines through across every track on ‘Solar Nights’, and the years since his debut was released have been well spent perfecting his craft. “Even in just the last couple of years I’ve made some big changes in how I produce music. Compared to my debut, everything under the hood has changed here,” he explains. “Every day, with every production, I’m learning new things and when I listen to these new tracks, the depth in the mixes, the clarity, I like to think of ‘Solar Nights’ as Satin Jackets but in 3D.“

From wanting to recreate the sound of magazine covers to appearing on them, the past few years has been quite some journey for the still enigmatic producer. The man behind the golden mask may prefer to stay out of sight but ‘Solar Nights’ reveals him to be fully in control, producing music that reflects the glamour and glitz of 70s Manhattan, artfully updated for the 21st century.

Satin Jackets - Solar Nights [Album Mini Mix]

Released on Eskimo Recordings at the start of the year 'Every Turn' by https://soundcloud.com/horixon (Monarchy’s Andrew Armstrong and Joseph Ashworth) and Norwegian singer Else Born (aka Philco Fiction’s Turid Alida Solberg) was a perfect moment of heartfelt, leftfield pop.

Horixon's Joseph Ashworth clearly had unfinished business with the track though. Whilst the original put Turid centre-stage Joseph has now re-tooled it into two more club friendly versions, good news for anyone familiar with his acclaimed solo releases on labels such as NeedWant, Life and Death, AnjunaDeep, Jonas Rathsman's Elements label and Catz n Dogz' Pets imprint. https://soundcloud.com/josephashworthmusic

For his first remix Joseph strips the track back to shuffling percussion and a liquid bass-line, allowing jazzy keys to dance across the track as snippets of Turid's vocals punctuate the track, the result a beautiful deep house track that sits somewhere between Havana and Detroit.

Finally Joseph turns in his 'Night Vision', a skeletal interpretation of the track, a driving rhythm section overlaid with staccato synth stabs, increasingly wild sound effects and again traces of Turid's heavily modified vocals pinging around like a ghost trapped in the machine.

Five years after his track 'Mr. Croissant Taker' appeared on Soulwax's Grand Theft Auto V radio station, Belgian producer Transistorcake releases his official debut release, the 'Future Plans' EP on Eskimo Recordings. Featuring 4 tracks of hazy electronica that would sit neatly alongside early releases on Aphex Twin's Rephlex label or recent excursions by the likes of Palmbomen and Betonkust.
 
Opening tracks 'Future Plan I' and 'Future Plan II' sets out Transistorcake's stall nicely. Swirling synth melodies, an ever evolving bassline that leads you down a labyrinthine maze and diaphanous strings and pads all add up to create an ecstatic yet at the same time melancholic quality to the music that manages to sound both ancient and modern.
 
"Future plans I and II are constantly changing routes of ideas, improvisations and coincidences," explains Transistorcake, "nothing is a constant in the two numbers, outside the pulse of the drums. You can see them as two possible versions of the future or as an old version of the future alongside its current variation."
 
Whilst cut from the same cloth as the previous tracks 'Ribbles' has more than a touch of the Nordics to it. Sparkling, playful melodies glitter like snowflakes caught in the flash of a strobe light before a pulsing disco beat rockets the track into the stratosphere. In his own words the track is "an ode to spontaneity and dancing without braking. I pictured it being played by a live band next to a pool at an LA cocktail party in the '80s."
 
Closing the EP we have 'Kluts', driven by a stuttering, head-nodding, rhythm that recalls that rapping sound of a woodpecker in the forest, the track is gently swaddled in a warm embrace of synthetic stings that gradually develops and asserts its dominance over the course of nine, all-too brief as it happens, minutes. For all its gauzy textures there's also an undeniable solidity to these tracks, an underlying organic quality and nostalgic warmth that permeates them. 
 
Having previously studied jazz composition and played in several bands over the years, Transistorcake brings a sense of spontaneity to the often all-to-structured world of electronic music. This EP just capturing a snapshot in time of these songs that can be endlessly reworked and reimagined in his live set, where live bass and drums, are added to his collection of vintage synths to an endless back and forth between man and machine.

Following on from the release of 'Solar Nights', the critically acclaimed 2nd album from German producer Tim Bernhardt, aka Satin Jackets, Eskimo Recordings have turned to a hand picked selection of up & coming producers and old friends to reinterpret several of the album's key tracks. 

With more than 11 million streams on Spotify alone, 'Northern Lights', Satin Jackets' collaboration with David Harks formed a centre piece of the new album. Having made his debut on Eskimo in 2018 Russian producer Antenna steps up to subtly rework the track with organic sounding drums, delicate synth melodies and uplifting diaphanous synths that raise up Harks' vocals to new heights.

Whilst Bernhardt is already at work on new material these remixes offer a satisfying postscript to 'Solar Nights', offering alternative takes sure to soundtrack discos, festivals and pool parties throughout the summer and beyond.

If anyone was going to do justice to 'Athena', Satin Jackets and Anduze's tribute to the Greek capital it was surely going to be label regular, and resident of said city, NTEIBINT and perfectly capturing the track's laid back bittersweet nature, NTEIBINT turns in a remix as fresh as a Peloponnese breeze at the end of long hot summer's day.

Originally released in 2016 on Eskimo Recordings' 'Yellow Collection' Middle Sky Boom's track 'Slow With The Run' has been a well-hidden gem that now gets the remix treatment from Parisian duo Il Est Villaine, who deliver an Indie-Disco take with a slight oriental touch that departs itself from the ordinary 120bpm tracks that shape most peak-time sets these days. Il Est Vialine reduce 'Slow With The Run's tempo and support the orginal Arabesque guitar with a heavy drums and come along with a lush bass line that pushes the listener through the recurring mental synth arpeggio.

Middle Sky Boom's EP 'Slow With The Run' will be released on Eskimo Records on August 23rd, 2019.
