The Music Community: Uncharted Sounds

Any artist is welcome to send us a track via freshonthenet.co.uk anytime between Monday lunchtime and Wednesday evening (or when we receive 200 submissions, whichever is sooner) - and all our moderators, including Tom Robinson, will listen to every track. This is our full inbox from the week beginning Mon 11th December: from Friday afternoon you'll be able to hear our shortlist and pick your favourites on this week's Listening Post which will appear at freshonthenet.co.uk/batch593

If a track you submitted does not appear in this list, it’s probably because another of your tracks appeared in our Fresh Faves or on the BBC Music Introducing Mixtape during the last three months — we ask that artists featured on either wait three months before resubmitting to give others a chance. 

We also don’t accept short previews or SoundCloud Go tracks that can only be heard as 30 second previews, and tracks made private after submission, which cannot be included in playlists. You will be able to resubmit the track in future. Tracks (and remixes of tracks) that have been previously submitted, and tracks from banned artists will also be removed.

Christmas songs and the like are also not eligible for the Listening Post, although we will collect these into a playlist that will be published on 24 December.

“Hitch Hiker’s Dream” is a sweeping Americana journey that captures the restless spirit of freedom and the beauty of the unknown. Blending warm acoustic energy with cinematic storytelling, the song follows a lone traveller drifting from town to town, guided only by the open road and the promise of the next horizon.

From dust-covered boots and chance encounters to star-lit nights where the world feels endless, the track paints a vivid portrait of life lived between destinations. The chorus lifts into a celebration of unrestrained independence — “Give me the sky, give me the stars / I don’t need maps I’ll follow my heart” — making the song both a personal declaration and a universal anthem for wanderers.

With its comforting nostalgia, rich imagery, and rolling-road rhythm, “Hitch Hiker’s Dream” stands as a modern road song with classic roots — perfect for lovers of folk, country, and storytelling song writing. Whether heard on a long drive or a quiet evening at home, it invites listeners to escape the ordinary and step into a world where freedom is the only destination.

James blends his lyrical writing skills, guitar playing and (limited) vocal ability, with his professional technical skills in digital engineering and AI to bring his music to live. 

Hitch Hiker's Dream

The track follows the unraveling of a relationship during a trip back home to Cork, where my partner and I hoped to reconnect with the spirit of the land but instead found ourselves drifting apart. Recorded at Frying Pan Studios in Tasmania with Chris Townend (Portishead, DMA's), it explores themes of belonging and love lost, shaped by the landscapes and stories that made me.

The Winding Stair

Never Sell your Soul by Dub Tropico takes you on a trip in the time machine along with Dub Grandmaster Buguinha outta Brazil. It's a track which has echoes of our late 90's influences like 4hero, a bit of Triphop, and Bristol sounds and Dub with a haunting mantra by Madha. Big Analog Tape Dub Vibe from Buguinha which really pushes the sub bass on your speakers! And some really nice rich layers all mixed down by Juan O Mago at 39D studios here in Rio.

DJ Relic: "Music haunts all artists, it's always playing in the different corners of our minds, and that era musically was a very special one for us. We wanted to evoke some of it but also keep it fresh and engineer it bass heavy with all the modern and analogue studio techniques and equipment that now allow you to push things sonically.
The track's been a while in the making. So many layers when you listen close. I think we made a track that will now haunt you too"
