Max Friedman is a composer, trumpet player, Yiddishist, translator, and educator based in Memphis, TN. His music and scholarship explore the multitudes of ways Yiddish speakers have and continue to express their identities through music. His composition “Butter-Lider,” for Yiddish poetry recordings and sextet, was commissioned and premiered (Dec. 2022) by Cleveland’s No Exit New Music Ensemble. Other compositions have been performed by Yarn/Wire, Hub New Music, the Lydian String Quartet, Ekmeles, Ensemble Dal Niente, the Brown University Orchestra, and the Boston-based Horizon Ensemble. An advanced Yiddish student and translator, Max was a 2021 Steiner Program Fellow at the Yiddish Book Center, and in 2022 attended the YIVO-Bard Uriel Weinreich Yiddish Summer Program. He has also presented at conferences hosted at Indiana University, Brandeis University, and the University of Toronto, and he is a 2023 Fortunoff/In Geveb Fellow. Max holds degrees from Brown University (AB ‘20) and Brandeis University (MFA ‘22).

Jack Langdon (b. 1994, Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians) is an experimental composer, filmmaker, and writer. His work investigates incompleteness, indifference, mimesis, stagnation, and material brevity. He is currently devising systematic approaches to non-harmony.

As a performer, his mediums are the pipe organ and the Ojibwe wooden flute (bibigwan). The subjects of his films are the landscape, the built environment, memory, and the transmission of these things through people. His writings investigate philosophy of music and political economy of contemporary cultural production.

Jack has written works for ensembles Yarn/Wire, Schallfeld Ensemble, Fonema Consort, Ensemble Dal Niente, Talea Ensemble, Prague Quiet Music Collective, Southland Ensemble, Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, and Trio SÆITENWIND. His orchestral works have been performed by the Minnesota Sinfonia and St. Olaf Orchestra. He has created work together with musicians Jeff Kimmel, Olivia Shortt, Anthony Vine, Webb Crawford, Taylor Ho Bynum, Kelley Sheehan, and Weston Olencki. His work has been supported and presented by the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, Darmstädter Ferienkurse, the Fromm Foundation, The Awesome Foundation, and the Prague City Gallery.

His recordings have been released by IMPREC, Sawyer Editions, Dinzu Artefacts, and Lobby Art Records. His written work has been published by Sound American, Cacophony, and Shred Magazine. He runs an independent record label and music journal called Empty Stage and runs a blog called Challenging Music.

He is a PhD student in Composition and Music Technology at Northwestern University. He holds degrees from Dartmouth College and Saint Olaf College. He was a Graduate Fellow at the Alice Kaplan Center for the Public Humanities in 2024 and 2025. 

Jack grew up in the unincorporated community of Keyeser, Wisconsin. He is an enrolled member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

No Exit New Music Ensemble is a Contemporary Art Music Ensemble based in Cleveland, Ohio.

No Exit was founded by composer Timothy Beyer with the intent of serving as an outlet for the commission and performance of contemporary avant-garde concert music. No Exit is committed to promoting the works of living composers, particularly the music of young and emerging artists who haven't yet had either the opportunities or exposure of their better known counterparts. Our goal is to showcase exciting and important programing from composers around the world with a focus on presenting progressive music of composers in the Greater Cleveland area.

While it’s core group consists of a piano quartet, at times No Exit will be supplemented by other musicians and/or electronics in order to present a wide range of programing. It is our hope to provide our audience with a challenging and rewarding experience, and to do so at venues and in communities around Northeast Ohio, always free and open to the public.
