The Leftroom project started by Matt Tolfrey now has three imprints going strong, and with this package they make their boldest statement yet. Fusing retro leanings with today’s dynamics without losing sight of its key values, this is a taster from the 5 Years Of Leftroom compilation that lines up the label for the next five years of forward thinking dance floor mischief.

The retrospective compilation features 20 standout tracks that have worked floors worldwide and includes 4 that are completely exclusive to this release. Centering on a core of producers, Leftroom is also adept at cherry picking the hottest up-and-coming talent, having picked up on Ryan Crosson in 2006 and Jimmy Edgar in 2008. Matt Tolfrey’s tireless A&amp;R skills have allowed the label to seamlessly update their sound, scoring hits at every stage of their evolution.

For the exclusive tracks, MURK legend Oscar G and Lazaro Casanova, direct from Miami USA, unload a whole load of tricks into ‘Alone’ aimed right at the heart of the floor. From incessant tribal drumming to a bright organ sample this will light up the fattest systems. Once the percussion grabs you and allows the bass to work your hips it simply wont let go.
INxec and Matt Tolfrey turn in one of the hypnotic builders that have made them such a formidable partnership. This is a track to rally the floor behind it and captivate them as it unfolds. Looping tightly, ‘In Excess’ welcomes in sweeping melodies with clinical fills and sets them off with precise percussion. Subtly building and announcing layer upon layer with another flourish; this is a real burner for attentive audiences.

Waifs and Strays return with their warbled vocals and strutting rhythms for another crack at the peak time. Bringing an infinitely elastic bass line to the fore and letting the forementioned vocals unfold, ‘Heartbreak’ has an immediacy that will give it considerable mileage. Think 80s synth pop swapping notes with the funky drummer at The Marcy Hotel and you are close. ‘Military Buzz’ is a light and bouncy number with jazzy chords that illuminate tight rhythms. With an inquisitiveness that hints back at the early days of Leftroom, Matthew Burton and Kate Rathod probe the floor, sending wave after wave of rolling sub bass through the room. Focusing on the subtleties of dance floor dynamics in enticing fashion, this is a smooth tool that has enough dirt under its nails to make it a versatile weapon. That each of the cuts here will find a disco to work is an understatement. The special exclusive EP release gathers behind it influences and intentions in equal measure and opens the next chapter for the imprint in blistering form.

The Hypercolour train picks up yet more steam with their next release, a double A side from Maxxi Soundsystem Featuring Name One on vocal duties and legendary sonic inventor Matthew Herbert in the remix role. Brighton based beatsmith Maxxi Soundsystem has risen to the top of the pile in recent months with heartfelt jams for Needwant and Futureboogie all fusing uplifting melodies with melancholic beats. 

And it’s a similar MO on this unassumingly anthemic new track, ‘Regrets We Have No Use For.’ Characterised by a wavy, frayed synth line that grows louder then quieter in the mix, soft shakers bring some wiggle whilst the breathy voice of Name One floats up above. It’s charming and sultry, slowly working its way under your skin at the same time as making you dance all under pinned by a monstrous, all consuming and grumbling bass line that makes your chest throb and head bob. 

Found sound innovator and general all round music chief Matthew Herbert goes for a much less soupy sound on his remix. The beats here are less smooth and more splintered, propping up the now distant, filtered vocal that drifts in and out of focus. Of course, the background synth are now much more unhinged and trippy in Herbert’s hands, with the resulting effect one suited to darkened back rooms in the dead of night. 

As ever, an unpredictable release from Hypercolour but that sounds as unique as anything the label has offered up in the past.

BRAIDS are one of my favourite bands, so when I had the chance to work with them I jumped on it. The vocals were the starting point, which I layered and used to generate a general feeling also in fitting with the lyrics, which then defined how I built the rest of the tracks around them. The first one from the EP is "Pleasures", for which I wanted to make something positive and warming, with nice straightforward drums and nothing too harsh in terms of builds and drops, just a delicate flow to give a pleasurable listening experience, hopefully!

SOUVENIRPLUS18 - FISCHER & KLEBER

Fischer and Kleber have most definitely been thinking outside the box for their latest EP on SOUVENIRPLUS.

Over four tracks the German duo demonstrate their range and skill in creating taut and effective melodies. They kick things off with a gentle, tinkling beat that reminiscent of early midi accompaniments, over which euphoric piano keys lift the tone to new heights. The bassline hisses along until hurtling headfirst into a powerful, pleading baritone that positively urges ones hands further into the air.  Next up things get tribal, the banging of the drums accompany some synth stabs which ratchets up the tension, as some guttural voices chant along. A Twilight Zone-like eerie synth announces the massive drop, as the bassline hits like a speeding locomotive.

‘Wonderful Life’ is quite the change of pace, baroque chamber strings clash with a slow insistent beat and a distended male cabaret voice as the cherry on top of this weirding cake. A most effective mood piece and most definitely the first time we’ve had a viola di gamba on a Souvenir release! Will cause some consternation to the confused at many an after hours. The closer is something more approaching the traditional driving F&K dancefloor sound, a lethal tool of pure grinding rhythm, textures provided by small synth details and a repeating vocal quack. Somehow the combination of the plucked string sounds, and some chopped early music snippets lift the mood, turning a seemingly dark beat into an unexpectedly soaring track.
