This is a set of meditation pieces I wrote in 2021 and 2022 and finished in 2023.   A Hybrid and anamorphic mix of  acoustic, orchestral, and electronically manipulated sounds in the pursuit of a serene and reflective experience.  Remembering Emma was a piece I wrote and recorded after my mother passed away.

Sad Reflection

The Foothills of Old Age is a phrase from a Leonard Cohen quote in a documentary where he described his feelings at age 70 when his manager embezzled all his money and stole everything, leaving him broke. He wondered if he needed to start playing guitar in coffee shops and, while not “aged”, was at the “foothills of old age”.    The inspiring part was he launched his most successful tours and part of his career lasting after that.
I used the images of undulating rolling foothill and time passing slowly and steadily for this piece. A slow 60 BPM breathing pace.  
Musically I used a couple elements I thought represented this idea of moving forward.   There are inner voices represented in the cello between the bass and higher voice, there’s are echos of thought and reminders along the journey in the piano. He didn’t do this alone, he formed a great band, so the choir represents people, collaboration and support   There is slowly evolving drama in the tension and release of the harmonies, but no dramatic events or shifts.   Perseverance.  It progresses but it doesn’t really land as the journey and movement is the point.
The mood arc is sad, reflective, moody becoming determined & hopeful,  and then settling in a  haunting stoic solitude.
