At the time, we were deep in exploring original samples of many classic hip hop songs. We noticed an interesting connection for one particular artist that had a very unique sound. A wide range of producers had sampled 1970s Ahmad Jamal jazz records and coincidentally teamed up with some the dopest artists of the time to create some classic hip hop joints. Tracks sampling Ahmad Jamal's music seemingly created a deep playlist, all spawning from a few sound clips from a handful of Jamal's records. We used 4 turntables to create this mix to thread together some awesome music that was recreated as some equally awesome music and of course to pay appreciation to the brilliant jazz pianist himself.

In the last few months, I've been excavating old cassettes from the "Mom's House" era. This installment is a simple sample tape from 1993. Sample tapes are what I used to make in order to remember which loop ideas I liked as I listened to records I either just got or had sitting around for a while. Most are just one element. There are a couple of layered arrangements as well which means I had high hopes they would turn into something. Happy to say a couple of these samples found nice homes as you may recognize.

DJ Mdeck’s journey began as one half of *The Deck Bros* on WRIU 90.3 FM at the University of Rhode Island in the 2000s, where he cultivated a passion for underground hip-hop and vinyl culture. Later on he established himself in the Boston area with multiple residencies and was involved as DJ for b-boy battles, earning a reputation for high-energy, authentic sets.  A dedicated record digger, DJ Mdeck has shifted his focus to deep funk, soul, original samples and breaks, spinning all-vinyl sets that celebrate rare grooves and timeless classics.
