Living With Animal Ghosts

After two albums exploring the dystopian universe of their city in crisis, the Athenian group Mechanimal delve now into the outskirts of their hometown, away from the sociopolitical fragmentation of the Greek capital, inside a deep and prolonged silence of the mountain forests surrounding Athens. 
“Delta Pi Delta” started with a new lineup, erasing the events of a rather tense and tough past, focusing on nature as a means of escape from the modern depression of urban life. This time with female vocals, featuring lead singer Eleni Tzavara (formerly of Film and Etten), electric guitars by Tassos Nikogiannis and Kostas Matiatos, and electronic programming by Giannis Papaioannou, Mechanimal started recording the backbone of their new album during the spring of 2015, while final editing and mixing took place during August 2015, in an isolated room by some faraway beach. 
The result of these new recordings is 8 new songs plus 2 instrumentals which will be included as extra tracks in the digital version of the album. Ten new tunes captivating the mystery that lies beneath a quiet life outside a big city. The group's own hybrid blend of mechanical beats, shoegazing guitar drones and repetitive electronic patterns, shapes now a different perspective that embraces the strangeness and the atmosphere of dreamy landscapes around Athens. The materializing of these silent places into a conceptual sound revealed a new process, which helped the group transform their vision into a tangible medium.
The symbolical acronym title "Delta Pi Delta" is referring to the lyric "giving names to stars". As a whole it represents the existential journey of any two-footed animal. In this journey, dreams reveal desires and fears that we're not consciously aware of, but play an important part in consciously or subconsciously helping us become better at dealing with life.

Ύστερα από δύο album, όπου εξερεύνησαν το δυστοπικό σύμπαν της Αθήνας σε εποχή κρίσης, οι Mechanimal χάνονται τώρα στα προάστια της γενέτειράς τους, μακριά από τα κοινωνικοπολιτικά όρια της πρωτεύουσας, μέσα στη βαθιά σιωπή των ορεινών δασών που την πλαισιώνουν. 
Το νέο τους album, “Delta Pi Delta”, ξεκίνησε με νέο line-up, με σκοπό να σβήσει τα γεγονότα ενός έντονου και δύσκολου παρελθόντος και να επικεντρωθεί στη φύση ως μέσο απόδρασης από τη σύγχρονη κατάθλιψη της αστικής ζωής. Αυτή τη φορά τα φωνητικά είναι γυναικεία, από την Ελένη Τζαβάρα (πρώην Film, Etten), ηλεκτρικές κιθάρες παίζουν ο Τάσος Νικόγιαννης και ο Κώστας Ματιάτος και τον ηλεκτρονικό προγραμματισμό και την παραγωγή έχει κάνει ο Γιάννης Παπαϊωάννου. Οι ηχογραφήσεις ξεκίνησαν την άνοιξη του 2015, ενώ οι μίξεις έγιναν τον Αύγουστο του 2015 σ’ ένα απομονωμένο δωμάτιο δίπλα σε μια μακρινή παραλία. 
Το αποτέλεσμα είναι 8 νέα τραγούδια, συν 2 ορχηστρικά bonus tracks στην ψηφιακή έκδοση του album. 10 νέα κομμάτια, τα οποία αιχμαλωτίζουν το μυστήριο που βρίσκεται κάτω από την ήσυχη ζωή μακριά από τη μεγάλη πόλη. Το μοναδικό υβριδικό μείγμα του συγκροτήματος, που αποτελείται από μηχανικά beats, shoegazing κιθαριστικά drones και επαναλαμβανόμενα ηλεκτρονικά μοτίβα, σχηματίζει τώρα μια διαφορετική προοπτική η οποία αγκαλιάζει την ιδιομορφία και την ατμόσφαιρα των ονειρικών τοπίων γύρω από την Αθήνα. Η αποτύπωση αυτών των σιωπηλών τοπίων σε έναν εννοιολογικό ήχο, αποκάλυψε μια νέα διαδικασία, η οποία βοήθησε το συγκρότημα να μετατρέψει το όραμά του σε ένα απτό μέσο.
Ο συμβολικός ακρωνυμικός τίτλος, "Delta Pi Delta", αναφέρεται στο στίχο "giving names to stars". Σαν σύνολο αντιπροσωπεύει το υπαρξιακό ταξίδι ενός δίποδου ζώου, όπου τα όνειρα αποκαλύπτουν επιθυμίες και φόβους που δεν τους γνωρίζουμε αλλά παίζουν σημαντικό ρόλο στο να μας βοηθάνε συνειδητά ή υποσυνείδητα στο να αντιμετωπίζουμε τη ζωή.

With the White Flag Single, which prepares the release of their fourth album, Mechanimal are closing the cycle of a revealing journey that began with the industrial dystopian landscapes of their first homonymous album back in 2012, entered a post-punk electro track with Secret Science in 2014 and boldly delivered to Delta Pi Delta’s flawed crack in 2016.

The two new songs of White Flag Single do not raise the white flag that states an unconditional surrender but the one that sets the end of all personal, social, secular warfare of the past. In Easy Dead, the world's innocent history is written from the outset - as a warning for the future, and in Red Mirror the only force for survival is revealed: the one that takes the form of a redemptive disaster with the sole purpose of starting everything from scratch.

The theatrical vocals - a trademark of Mechanimal's collaboration with Freddie Faulkenberry - meet guitar distortion (by Jimmy Polioudis on Easy Dead and George Theofanidis on Red Mirror), just at the point where shoegazing breaks the precious repetitive materials of motorik drone n 'roll, which Mechanimal has defined with each one of their short or long stories, over a decade that, if had they not existed, would seek them out as its most sophisticated soundtrack.

The artwork of the single is based on an idea by Angelica Vrettou. The video of Easy Dead is directed by Christos Sarris. The video of Red Mirror is directed by John Karabelas.

ION’s dubby electronica is the sort of music one may hear (and see!) when closing their eyes while being amidst the noisy downtown center of a metropolis; the sound of a never-ending summer; a grand sound-and-vision spectacle at the private theater of those who can still dream on.

"Holy Punk" marks the return of Mechanimal. Two and a half minutes of joyful and festive rage, a new single that precedes the release of their 4th album “Crux” which drops in January 2020. 
“Holy Punk” is not included in the forthcoming album, it was written during the “Crux” sessions but was completed in December 2019. Its video companion is created by more than 7000 images composing the 666 collages of Angelica Vrettou.

A survival guide in the age of regularity by listening to electronic music.

"Crux" is an in-depth exploration of the past, present, and (possible) future of everyday life with the aim of personal awakening. It focuses on an idea that can account for the melding of seemingly incompatible musical worlds and theories with respect to the mechanisms of each one of them. It could easily be described as the absolute “crossover” album of Mechanimal, or simply the one where the ideas and obsessions of its members meet at the heart of the mechanical animal.

"Crux" is the Mechanimal manifesto. It consists of electronic music, spoken word, cut-up images and videos, deconstructed slogans, ideas and actions. A multidimensional collage inspired by the harsh reality, or otherwise the violent regularity that is "enforced" (by the new music industry to home entertainment and by "fake news" to climate change), and at the same time criticized.

Believing that everything is political and that we are all guilty of what is happening, Mechanimal, without limitation, use a fragmented sound palette to describe ten stories of reality deconstructed. From the death-trap of "Ghetto Level" and the raw industrial resonances of "Easy Dead" and "Scavengers" and from the pagan techno of "Razor Tube" and "Vanquish" to the feverish post-punk of "Red Mirror", Mechanimal want, not only to escape the inherent limitations of each genre, but also to break down the barriers that do not allow all genres to become one.

"Crux" recording sessions began in January 2019 and ended in August at the band's own studio. This album hosts guest musicians: Jimmy Polioudis (guitars on "Sharon" and "Easy Dead"), Henrik Meierkord (cello on "Scavengers" and "La Poverina Delle Ossa"), Vasiliki Mazaraki (violin on "Scavengers" and "La Poverina Delle Ossa”) and George Theofanidis (guitars in “Red Mirror”).

Οι Mechanimal ήταν, ήδη από τη δημιουργία τους το 2011 ένα industrial πρότζεκτ εν εξελίξει, ανοιχτό σε πειραματισμούς και αναζητήσεις, που χώνεψε μέσα του διαφορετικές φωνές, διαφορετικά μουσικά είδη, ένα σύμπαν από αναφορές, πρωτογενείς ήχους, τα πολιτικά και ατομικά «ημερολόγια» των αφανών ηρώων μιας δεκαετίας. Ο «Θόρυβος» έρχεται ως η πέμπτη και πρώτη ελληνόφωνη πράξη στο μεγάλο βιβλίο των Mechanimal, μετά το ομότιτλο «Mechanimal» που κυκλοφόρησε το 2012, το «Secret Science» του 2014, το «ΔΠΔ» του 2016 και το «Crux» του 2019. 

Τα οκτώ κομμάτια του άλμπουμ, με τις λέξεις της Αγγελικής Βρεττού, από καιρό στο σύμπαν των Mechanimal ως δημιουργός των εξωφύλλων των δίσκων τους και επιμελήτρια των βίντεο των ζωντανών τους εμφανίσεων, κι ερμηνευμένα από την ηλεκτρική φωνή της Θέκλας Τσελεπή, μοιάζουν σαν διαχρονικά, ανέντακτα, πολύτιμα θραύσματα της μέχρι τώρα ηχο-κοσμοθεωρίας τους. Οι λέξεις της Αγγελικής Βρεττού είναι ποίηση γραμμένη στην κόψη μιας ταραγμένης συνείδησης, σε μια διαρκή αναζήτησή μιας «ανάσας κινδύνου» από κοινωνίες που έχουν πια πλημμυρίσει από το περίσσευμα της πατριαρχικής τοξικότητας, την βίαιη αποκοπή από την αθωότητα, την μέχρι εξαφάνισης συρρίκνωση της φαντασίας. Η φωνή της θρυλικής Θέκλας Τσελεπή αφηγείται με την αίσθηση του επείγοντος κάθε ιστορία αυτής της λυτρωτικής εξομολόγησης. 

Η μουσική του Γιάννη Παπαϊωάννου ενώνει λέξεις και φωνή σε μια συμφωνία που ξεκινάει από τη διαρκή παρακαταθήκη της Λένας Πλάτωνος, φτάνει μέχρι την αβαντ-γκαρντ της Λόρι Αντερσον για να επιστρέψει στο βιομηχανικό post - dark wave των Mechanimal. Χορευτική και μελαγχολική, η αναπάντεχα ευθεία μελωδική γραμμή που κάνει τον «Θόρυβο» να ακούγεται σαν ένα ταξίδι από το σκοτάδι στο φως, είναι μόνο μια από τις αμέτρητες «διακηρύξεις» αυτού του άλμπουμ, που αξίζει κανείς να φυλάξει με προσοχή μέχρι το τέλος του κόσμου.

Mechanimal was, since their creation in 2011, an industrial project in progress, open to experimentation and research, which absorbed different voices, different musical genres, a universe of references , primary sounds, the political and individual "diaries" of all invisible heroes of a decisive decade. "Thorivos" comes as the fifth and first Greek-language act in the big book of Mechanimal, after their homonymous "Mechanimal" debut that was released in 2012, the "Secret Science" of 2014, the "Delta Pi Delta" of 2016 and the "Crux" of 2019.


The eight tracks of the album, with the words of Angelica Vrettou, for a long time in the Mechanimal universe as creator of their album covers and curator of the videos of their live performances, performed by the electric voice of Thekla Tselepi, sound like timeless, irrelevant, precious fragments of their hitherto sound-worldview. 

The words of Angelica Vrettou are poetry written on the edge of a troubled conscience, in a constant search for a "breath of danger" from societies that are now flooded with the excess of patriarchal toxicity, the violent severance from innocence, the shrinking of fantasy to extinction. The voice of the legendary Thekla Tselepi tells with the sense of urgency every story of this redemptive confession.

The music of Giannis Papaioannou unites words and voice in an agreement that starts from the permanent legacy of Lena Platonos, reaches to the avant-garde of Laurie Anderson to return dynamically to the industrial post-dark wave of Mechanimal. Dancing and melancholic, just as fearlessly sincere as the poetry of AngelicaVrettou and the voice of Thekla Tselepi, the unexpectedly melodic straight line that makes "Thorivos" sound like a journey from darkness to light, is just one of the countless "declarations" of this album, which is worth keeping carefully until the end of the world.
