Painstakingly put together by label boss Kasra over the past year, ‘Underground Sonics’ is an exciting overview of modern day drum & bass, showcasing the true dexterity of one of the most well regarded, independent electronic music labels in the UK today. 
Kasra has pulled out all the stops, sifting through his phone book to enlist the talents of some of the biggest and most exciting producers in the game. Noisia, Dub Phizix, Enei, Phace, Sam Binga and Kasra himself all make sterling contributions that make for an album of the best of Underground Sonic expression.
It’s been a few years since our last fully fledged label compilation so I wanted to ensure this one was as vital as possible. For me this album truly encapsulates the essence of Critical, a balanced mix of all that’s exciting about this music - heads down lights out rollers, experimental side steps and some slightly more aggressive attention grabbers. If you don’t already know Sinic & Wingz, well… you probably should. Both are established and diverse producers in their own right, and the collaborative effort Fin perfectly fuses their styles and production values into one slice of minimal delight. Arpeggiating synths are briefly teased in the intro, before the tune plunges into a precision led drop that utilises bass stabs and damaging lower frequencies to great degree. The synths in the intro soon come back into play, adding a more melodic element to the track as it progresses, whilst still keeping its form as a deep, club slammer.

Rockwell returns to his Obsolete Medium imprint for its third release - “Isolation Ritual”. Featuring the distorted crescendos and dissonant echoes of the Alix Perez supported track ‘Vent’, and ‘Ditch’ - a pulsating and dub-siren heavy collaboration with the man of the moment, Workforce. 

“ ’Isolation Ritual’ was borne out of me examining the relationship between my writing practices and my life outside music. For years I would shut myself away from the world in my windowless studio, concentrating on making music. It became normal for me to spend long periods by myself, isolated from the world outside and my friends and family. Over many years I became increasingly withdrawn and detached and struggled for objectivity. Tasks that would normally take an hour were taking days, as I was constantly second-guessing myself. My output ground to a halt.  

Making changes to both my creative process and the relationship I have with my music has been massively beneficial to my productivity and also to my wider mental health. Music is starting to flow again naturally. It is a slow process to unlearn years of bad habits, but hopefully ‘Isolation Ritual’ is a step in the right direction.”

One of the most exhilarating talents to come out fo the drum and bass scene in recent times, Rockwell has been heralded by the likes of Billboard, FACT, RA, Mixmag, CRACK and DJ Mag. He has released on some of the biggest and most revered labels in the game - Metalheadz, Critical, Shogun Audio Neosignal and Darkestral - and collaborated with a range of artists including Roni Size, Flowdan, Sam Binga and Breakage.

A past alumnus of both Radio 1’s Residency and ‘In New DJ’s We Trust’’, his debut album ‘Obsolete Medium’ was released on Shogun Audio in 2015 to critical acclaim, with Billboard selecting it as one of their top 10 Electronic LP’s of the year. 

2020 sees Rockwell continue on his mission, undertaking further sonic explorations with his label OBSOLETE MEDIUM.

Based out of Linz, north Austria, Martin Schober is a singular protagonist at the forefront of this beguiling game we call drum & bass. He likes hip-hop, skateboarding, schnitzel, Leibniz biscuits and long walks in the sunset, but he’s most respected for how he traipses across electronic music’s wildest terrains with total boundary abandonment… And is regarded as a leading influential new-gen figure in the genre. 

From his agenda-setting halftime twist of ‘Sunday Crunk’ to his rolling, emotional collabo cameo on Camo & Krooked’s acclaimed album ‘Mosaik’. From his entrance into the Fabriclive mix hall of fame with a mix album comprising entirely of his own productions (‘Fabriclive 95’) to his Drum&BassArena Award-winning debut album ‘Emulation’, Mefjus’s signature sound has been felt across the furthest expanses of the genre since he emerged in the early 2010s. 

Now working closely with Vision - the label run by kindred studio spirits Noisia - Mefjus continues to fine-tune his musical syntax, technical dexterity, eye for detail and deft groove sensibilities. The latest chapter to savour this on-going flux of development is his second album ‘Manifest’.

Released April 2018, ‘Manifest’ is the sound of Mefjus 2.0. After several years in the studio wilderness, exploring the dark science of song structure, musicality and textural contrasts, ‘Manifest’ captures a new mindset for Mefjus. Raw, energetic, playful and subversive, ‘Manifest’ is the most personal, diverse and daring body of work to date. Not so much as reminder of why he occupies such a unique position in drum & bass but a straight-up statement of intent.
