No one confronts the abyss better than Chris Orrick. The Michigan ex-factory worker formerly known as Red Pill has spent the last half-decade documenting industrial decay, familial pain, and struggles with addiction better than almost anyone inhabiting this poisoned soil. It’s somewhere between Charles Bukowski and Michael Moore, or maybe Atmosphere if he couldn’t ignore the arsenic in the air. 

As Orrick tells it, “Portraits,” his latest album for Mello Music Group is a return to form. 

“I tried to strip everything down to what I think I'm best at: simple, concise portraits of who I am,” Orrick says. “Whether that be finding myself through self-portraits, portraits of everyday workers, portraits of the current political moment or portraits of myself told through the eyes of people I encounter daily.” 

From the corroded arteries of the blue-collar heartland, Orrick emerges as one of the most incisive and savage critics of Trump’s America. If the American dream is dead, he unflinchingly lays the blame on avaricious corporations, crude demagogues, and structural racism. There’s nothing polemical about it: just warm-hearted, sad-eyed, gin-flooded depictions of a life where there are few right answers but a litany of wrong ones. 

The Michigan native is an acerbic poet, but too unpretentious and sarcastic to ever call himself that. In his love letter to his long-time girlfriend (“Lazy Buddies”), Orrick fantasizes about the pair decamping to a town an hour outside of Paris, where they can blissfully split a bottle of cheap wine. Then he mocks himself for being a little corny. But that’s part of its charm—through his ruthless honesty, we can see ourselves as we actually are—prone to idle delusions, indolence, and self-obsessed. 

“Portraits can often be overlooked, but there are so many details in the face that tell innumerable stories about what the person portrayed might have been feeling or going through,” Orrick continues. “I'm trying to find those details, within myself and within America today." 

On “Anywhere Instead,” he grouses about how most days he doesn’t want to leave his bed until noon, staring at his phone, wishing for imminent death. It’s a nothing matters, gallows humor that anoints him a laureate of existential dread. He captures the terror of the void, the ambiguity of not knowing where or when your next direct deposit will hit. He’s wise enough to understand how little he understands, allergic to cheap irony or forced symbolism. As he points out on stories, “not every story has a meaning, not every moment has a reason, sometimes you just let the music play and tell you what to say.” 

It’s obvious how loudly the music speaks to Orrick, who is rarely short of opinions or serrated observation. The somber piano-based melancholy and rugged drums of “Portraits” thump via a gifted arsenal of producers including Nolan the Ninja, L’Orange, Exile, Apollo Brown, and Onra. Only two guest rappers appear, Fashawn and Orrick’s partner in Ugly Heroes, Verbal Kent. Orrick carries the rest of the weight and you sense the Atlas burden he shoulders. 

But for the all the poignant complaints, there’s a soulful profundity at the core of the album. It goes further than stress over bills, nicotine and liquor compulsions, and a search for deeper revelation. If you can hear a song like “Mom” without slightly crumbling, you might be iron-born. It’s a eulogy for Orrick’s late mother, dead at 45 without seeing her children grow up, without the opportunity to take pride in her son’s ability to realize his dream—however flawed it can occasionally seem. It’s here where you sense the power of these Portraits. They capture the pain that too many of us feel, that manifests itself in so many distinct ways. For a little while, we understand the raw f&cked up complexity of what it means to be a human being in a lunatic world. The portrait is personal, but it’s all of us too.

Coalmine Records is pleased for yet another rerelease of ‘Land of the Crooks,’ the collaborative extended play project from the late Sean Price and Melbourne’s go to producer, M-Phazes. 

The project finds the longtime underground legend lending his distinctive, Brownsville-bred grimy vocals over Phazes’ rich tracks full of dramatic pianos, rich bass-lines, swinging horns and hard drums.

The A-side includes the main passes, comprised of four original tracks with the addition of the Small Professor Remix for ”Murdah Type Thinkin (feat. Guilty Simpson).” For this special edition rerelease, Coalmine has also added the Divided Souls Ent. & DJ Pain 1 Remix of “Land of the Crooks,” which was only previously made available on the label’s remix compilation, ‘Remineded,’ which first dropped back in January of 2015.

The B-side includes the instrumental passes of all of the original tracks, as well as the Small Pro Remix, in addition to the “Crookapella,” which includes various scratch stems taken from the EP, in addition to various isolated drum sounds, sound effects, and acapella of the “Land of the Crooks” single.

Additional features on LOTC include Roc Marciano, Billy Danze (of M.O.P.), Maffew Ragazino, Loudmouf Choir and the Dilated Junky, DJ Babu.

Vinyl is manufactured on a blue and green swirled configuration, limited to just 500 Units, and comes complete with the Andres Guzman designed artwork, inspired by the vintage ‘80s movie, ‘Crocodile Dundee.’

Sean Price was Hip-Hop’s Gray Hulk, a barbarian with the pen, with the sharpest of wits. A true Brooklyn legend...riP!

Plush Seats. Recline for a minute, spark a spliff, and savor the cozy luxury. Enjoy the foggy velvet majesty summoned by the new beat tape from the LA-by-way of Oregon singer, rapper, and producer known as Calvin Valentine. 

In theory, these are merely instrumentals, but each is a self-contained narcotic universe. Novel strains invented from the finest hybrids of past and present. The genre tag on your iTunes reads “Bong Rips,” and conceivably, this is the chill soundtrack to the weed dispensary in your heart, mind, and favorite herbal habitat. You can detect the DNA of past originators, J Dilla and Madlib, Kanye West and The Heatmakerz, but it's more than just tapping into the best of this millennium. Valentine drills into the atavistic soul that made their beats so cold. A brilliant new recipe for donuts, another panacea to be hawked at the medicine show. 

Making his Mello Music debut, Plush Seats heralds Valentine’s arrival as one of the most formidable and versatile producers of his generation. Of course, this isn’t his first rodeo. By his mid-20s, the precocious producer had already racked up a resume that could pass any certification exam, featuring collaborations with De La Soul, Nas, Bun B, Boogie, Juicy J, Illa J, Planet Asia, Fat Tony, and Devin The Dude. 

Plush Seats follows Home, a gorgeous record that Valentine produced entirely for Illa J (brother of the late immortal, James Yancey), which Fader hailed as “a moving testimonial to the family and the power of community.” His previous album was Eugene, a full-length gumbo of celestial R&B, pop, and hip-hop that would you leave you rightfully believing that Valentine grew up eating Coney dogs in Detroit, rather than the bucolic countryside of Eugene, Oregon. 

XXL raved about its trippy psychedelia. Uproxx called it the “smooth groove that your summer needs.” Okayplayer said that with Calvin Valentine, “the future of music is in good hands.” With Plush Seats, the future is now. It’s a work of supreme virtuosity, a stoned immaculate saga ideal for blunt cruises, impromptu cyphers, and meditative late night head nods. 

It always starts with the drums. Valentine picked up the instrument at age 6 and the heartbeat is a constant oxygen-rich throb throughout the album. He creates his own pockets with the feel of an instinctive and intuitive musician. A song like the “Plush Intro” could be a sequel to “Dipset Anthem,” with concussive drums, filthy scratches and keys that conjure a conspiratorial mood. “76” reminds you of classic Wu-Tang, in which the RZA reanimated the ghosts from classic Stax Records, full of insistent and stabbing horn sections spitting out a warped extraterrestrial soul. Muscle Shoals on steroids. 

If Donuts was the White Album of beat tapes, a cut like “Vanilla” uses it as ground zero for curious and funky explorations. “Another World” sounds like a burner the Hitmen would’ve made for The Lox in ‘98. “Starr” could be the theme for a sitcom on 2032 Alpha Centauri. On “Ras Trent,” “PCH,” and “Tabernacle,” you can hear the littoral reggae slink of The Gladiators, Dennis Brown, and Gregory Isaacs, chopped up and reimagined with fluorescent futuristic tones. 

While “Mazel Tov” offers up a toast buoyed by old early 60s soul pre-Age and the synthesizers that sound dreamy and warm—an unrecognizable oldies anthem from a jukebox that only existed in a solitary dive bar in Conant Gardens. As the song fades out, a clip chimes in, “I’ve said unabashedly that a lot of the good ideas I‘ve had in my life, I owe to pot.” 

Plush Seats is nothing but strong ideas and a smooth ride. Grimy but opulent. Smoked out but clear-headed. A vibe like no other.

Depuis 2015 j’ai fais 162 concerts. A chaque concert je faisais des nouveaux morceaux improvisés. Alors quand l’inspi venait c’était stylé, puis quand l’inspi venait pas c’était naze. Mais comme l’inspi, elle prévient pas, dans les deux cas j’enregistrais. A la fin de la tournée, iTunes affichait 8,2 jours de son. Alors j’ai tout réécouté, les moments de merde je les ai laissé, les moments biens je les ai bossé. Et de fil en aiguille devinez ce qui est apparu : un album.

C’est le résultat d’un gros taff et en même temps c’est comme si ces morceaux avaient poussés tout seul
Ils sont tous composés et enregistrés en live, j’ai mis les infos dans les titres des morceaux, vous verrez ya des concerts où j’étais grave sous inspi et puis d’autres où y avait carrément rien à garder.
S’il y a autant de morceaux dans l’album c’est parce que c’est un album hors format (dans le cas où quelqu’un vous poserait la question)
Mais donc comme la plupart d’entre vous auront pas le temps de tout écouter j’ai demandé à des gens qui comptent pour moi ainsi qu’à des gens bons que j’ai rencontré sur la route, de digger dans la tracklist pour vous dire quel titre écouter en premier
