babyxxan is one of our favourite and most hard-working local artists. The mix they've put together for us is different to what you might usually hear Xan play on radio or during DJ sets. It's a conceptual mix they call it "Endorphic" and Xan did the artwork for it as well in addition to offering the following description for it, which we think is great:

"Calculated I've run roughly 17,472 km in my life. If I could run through water, it would probably be from Bogota to Melbourne. Noting, shoes would be very soggy.

This mix is what it would feel like to run through water, or to run through air, or to trail-run yourself into endorphonic oblivion. The beats that, if you left-foot-right-foot it perfectly, make it feel like the music is pumping your blood and your blood is pumping the music. Take it to the treadmill, the grass, the tarmac or the sand; so long as you lean into full EDM embodiment, sweat, and restlessness on whatever trail you end up on.

I am practicing on the sacred lands of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Kulin Nation. Sovereignty was never ceded."

For our 40th milestone in the mix series, we couldn't be more delighted to host the amazing Faery from Bristol, UK. Freya's approach integrates textured ambience and deep, proggy trance and techno, a sound that is undoubtedly deeply loved here in Naarm. We've been big fans of her mixes for @dreamsoftwarecorp, @rapturenetwork and her monthly show for @1020radio. Freya's mix for melt is as enjoyable, treating us to a gorgeous journey of chugging, psychedelic sounds.

For vol 43, we're joined by Xander Byng, one half of the team behind iconic local label @housesinmotion. He's also the curator of the wonderful @workitworkitout mix series, which soundtracked many of our state mandated 1 hr exercises during lockdowns over the past year. Xander's also a great DJ in his own right, having put together some wonderful mixes for @findingfigaro, @for_home_use_only, @houseoffriends and more. For melt, he traverses multiple sounds from uplifting house and dubby garage to trancey prog, hip hop and more. Enjoy the journey and stay well xx

Vol. 45 comes courtesy of Darcy Mahady, one of the minds behind @upstairsdownstairs, a local crew who have put together some wonderfully curated events as well as hosting their own excellent mix series. Darcy has superb taste and a deep appreciation for varying genres of electronic (and non-electronic) music, making every mix he puts together deeply engaging, adventurous and enlightening. Expect anything from ambient, trip hop, downtempo and IDM to 90s house, electro, breaks and more. Thanks for the mix Darcy!

Our next mix comes from our good friend Ophelia, who has donned their turbo alter-ego for an hour of hi-nrg, proggy club music. You may know Ophelia aka DJ Luv You from their joyful, disco-dipped selections at countless venues around town as well as on Skylab Radio or the Paris-based LYL Radio. They are also a co-founder of the very fun bi-monthly club night and mix series @luna_blessings alongside Daphne/Claire Dickson, which focuses on curating spaces and booking artists in the womxn, queer and GNC communities.

Blessed with a treat this week as our friend Tamina from Eora/Sydney serves up a delectable hour of euphoric trance hits -  just the thing to cure lockdown blues. Tamina is a versatile selector who you can normally catch spinning hard and dark techno, electro, house, trance and more. She's also one of the minds behind @freethedamnhouse and founder of Ante, an arts collective comprised of BIPOC creating spaces where non-western identities and cultures take primacy. A fun one for a sunny day! Enjoy :)

Go on a mindbending journey of sound with one of the brains behind one of our favourite and most creative local mix series @manifestation-fm. That's right, vol 54. comes from none other than Jasper Torque, or as we like to refer to him, Big T. If you're fan of the Manifestation series, you'll find plenty to enjoy here, with Tom offering up an enthralling sonic exploration of experimental soundscapes, dubby, industrial dnb, idm and more. vol. 55 comes from Eastern Distributor, a fast-rising producer and DJ out of Warrang/Sydney with a penchant for creating and mixing energetic, proggy, trance-tinged techno, electro and broken beat. He's also one of the minds behind @shed_syd as well as resident at local techno party Renegade. Daniel's slew of self-releases and contributions to local labels like @innertheft and international labels likle @pokeyprods are all killer and his mixes are just as good, with the @bizarro-recs mix being one highlight. His melt mix treats us to an engaging selection of diverse electronica spanning a wide variety of genres, tempos and moods, from dubby slow jams to speedy prog. We love it!

Those familiar with Katie’s work knows she’s a big advocate for Aus music overseas and an expert when it comes to all things proggy and deep. Local rising star Nak has a knack (pun intended) for throwing together high energy electro, acid, garage and breaks in tasteful and unexpected ways. vol. 66 coming in hot via our friend Ria, a.k.a Brown Suga Princess, a.k.a. BSP. Ria loves booty bass, footwork, ghetto tech, jungle, drill, reggaeton and everything inbetween. Her iconic blends are inspired by her reconnection to South Asian culture combined with music that is sexy, smooth and dark. If you've seen Ria play, you know she moves seamlessly through multiple genres and BPM’s in one set with a focus on energy and attitude. Rolling, proggy bangers from old school to new & fresh, from the young DJ & head behind @meltmelbourne. Depending on the set/mix/mood, Willis dives between a range styles & genres - dipping into electronica & downtempo in his Hope St Radio shows, and at other times he's even got a punk rock outlet via @sandydish.

Willis is a dedicated member of the community & it's been lovely to watch him grow and flourish.

Jack is an essential member of the local electronic music community, co-running the @aywa_syndicate parties and mix series that focus on highlighting middle-eastern sounds and artists. He's also the music editor for local mag @vervezine as well as a booking agent! His contribution to this mix series encompasses many things we love - diverse sounds from dubbed out breakbeat and squelchy electro to trippy trancey tech, all mixed to perfection and delivered in a playful, fun way. One of the minds behind local rave crew Dog's Breakfast, Atticus aka EuDuBong offers up some uplifting, groove-laden, decompression-oriented house, tech and garage recorded live at 7am from one of the Dog's Breakfast raves back in October. Rapidly increasing in notoriety and popularity, these Naarm-based not-for-profit monthly doofs and exhibitions aim to maintain the queer foundations of rave through safe and inclusive spaces while fundraising for important causes such as the Zoe Belle Gender Collective. @agendafluidity is a transfemme pianist, DJ, and promoter from Naarm. They create unique soundscapes that blend different genres, reflecting their personal journey in Naarm’s music scene. By mixing familiar and experimental tracks, they craft mixes that resonate on multiple levels. Through trans joy collective, agendafluidity organizes events that celebrate and support trans and queer artists and audiences, standing up against the growing wave of anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric in society and politics.

We use to throw a lot of house parties which Ryan (@localobject) would almost always DJ or play live hardware sets at. We started the melt events once it became harder for us to keep having house parties and it felt time to move into the club/pub. Ryan has been there from the beginning with this endeavour as well, performing at our events as Ryan Michael, as part of BDYLNG and as Vivian.

We're proud to debut his latest project Localized Object for the first volume of our new mix series, which will highlight a variety of sounds from local producers and DJs we love and are part of the melt community. In this volume, Localized Object treats us to just under an hour of entrancing, deep, psy-tinged techno and electro.

Our next mix comes from good friend and collaborator Milo Eastwood. Milo is an important fixture in the local music scene as the host of The Breakfast Spread on PBS, an events curator with Love Sensation and as an infectiously fun DJ. While having an in-depth and diverse musical library, he’s not afraid of throwing in crowd pleasers. 

Here’s a little message from Milo about his mix:

“Usually behind the decks I'm deep in the sunshine zone of house, pop & disco, but there are always tracks in the back of my mind that are slightly on the moodier/heavier side I’m always keen to slip in when people least expect it. It was great to focus purely on that energy when preparing this mix.

I can’t wait to get out there after the pandemic blows over and continue to improve my skills within this area of dance music. Some of these tracks have been in my library for 9 or 10 years yet I’ve never unleashed on a dance floor before! I hope you enjoy listening to this mix just as much as I did recording it."

Our next mix comes from Taiwan-born DJ Kaytseng, someone who's well-known for her gritty, fast and dark electro, EBM and techno sets. You may have seen her slaying in the booth late at night at countless club nights across Naarm over the years. This mix is an excellent example of why she is such a fixture in the local club scene and truly showcases her signature sound - ravey, creatively curated and plenty of fun.

Local selector Afrodisiac aka Gabby Jarell treats us to an hour and half of bangers in the latest melt mix. This one is high energy and inspired by what Gabby would would like to hear if she could teleport to a Friday night at a doof. From Ghent, Belgium, Carlos Go is a good friend and party music extraordinaire who plays regularly at legendary local hotspot Contrast Club. We met him at @horstartsandmusicfestival where he created campsite parties with a boombox on his shoulder once the music would finish each night. A real fun guy, which is reflected in this mix he has sent us.
