Kudo Sol - April 2023

Although we first became acquainted with Leila Youssefi, aka @lvlupkid via her involvement with @spacemilkmusic we've quickly come to find she's an elaborate muralist and painter whose unique perspective additionally informs her delectably selected mixes.

In roughly the last two and a half years, Leila has exhibited her own art, created a design for KCRW merch, painted a mural at Sofi Stadium for Superbowl LVI, not to mention numerous other large- and small-format paintings in the LA area and abroad. All of this just scratches the surface on who Leila is as an artist and as a person though, so be sure to take a look at her website at the link below as well.

In one corner, the shamanistic Saul Williams, actor, screenwriter and renowned harbinger of noise poetry and hip hop futurism. In the other corner, cleric of eclecticism King Britt, accomplished Philly-based musician, DJ, author and producer. 

On the explicit invitation of Moor Mother, who was a guest curator at Le Guess Who? 2018, these two great minds gave an exclusive, one-time collaborative performance entitled ‘Unanimous Goldmine’. Forging their collective work, insights, experiences and curiosity, it resulted in a fearless and groundbreaking performance that was completely improvised on stage.

A few years back, my friend Otis did a mixtape called ‘a time for peace’. It’s an effortless mix of melodic & vocally driven music which became a source of some of my favourite records that I was yet to discover. There was never a tracklist for it, but over the years, have found them serendipitously in record shops and had a few joyful moments when finally the needle drops on one of the tracks from this mix!
The past week has given me an opportunity to reflect on some of the records that I return to constantly, can get lost in & consider something else for a while. I hope that perhaps someone out there might find something in here that opens their ears to something new, can get lost in and one day have that needle drop moment too! Thanks to everyone who put me onto these records in one way or another.

Mildlife - 1BTN 5th Birthday Mix - 03.04.2020

Our next mix comes from good friend and collaborator Milo Eastwood. Milo is an important fixture in the local music scene as the host of The Breakfast Spread on PBS, an events curator with Love Sensation and as an infectiously fun DJ. While having an in-depth and diverse musical library, he’s not afraid of throwing in crowd pleasers. 

Here’s a little message from Milo about his mix:

“Usually behind the decks I'm deep in the sunshine zone of house, pop & disco, but there are always tracks in the back of my mind that are slightly on the moodier/heavier side I’m always keen to slip in when people least expect it. It was great to focus purely on that energy when preparing this mix.

I can’t wait to get out there after the pandemic blows over and continue to improve my skills within this area of dance music. Some of these tracks have been in my library for 9 or 10 years yet I’ve never unleashed on a dance floor before! I hope you enjoy listening to this mix just as much as I did recording it."

"I not so slowly transitioned from being a punk rock musician-guitarist-singer to new wave-disco-punk-DJ & Club Kid in 1987 Enchanted by the diverse mix of people and sounds that made clubbing in SF in that era such a unique experience. Selling my guitar and Fender Super Reverb amp to buy turntables about 15 years before a certain NYC band wrote a song about it. 

With all of today’s political divisiveness, the global pandemic, isolation, and pending economic collapse. It has me reflecting on those pre-rave days at the end of the Cold War era, the time of Reganomics and other political BS, really has me flashing back to clubbing in San Francisco and the Bay Area at that influential time in my life. A time when the clubs were a real sanctuary and DJ’ing was not such a big business. The places I went to dance were so diverse with innovative DJ’s that usually played all night, playing music that didn’t cater to one crowd or genre but rather creating a home for so many outcasts, with such different tastes and perspectives. 
Psychedelic, Punk Rock, Mod, New Wave, Industrial, Disco, Hip Hop, Funk, Gothic, Soul, Rock, Proto House, and Alternative all blending in to one. 

This DJ mix isn’t meant as any kind of definitive breakdown of the time (that would take weeks), just a glimpse into what you might of heard on one night at the club...
