Speedy Wunderground release their third single, ‘The Bride’ by TOY & Natasha Khan on July 1st.

The track will be available as a limited edition of 250 7” and features a dub version of the track, ‘Here Comes Dub Bride’ on the B-Side.

‘The Bride’ is a re-working of Iranian song "Aroos Khanom" by Amir Rassaie from the record "Funk, Psychedelia and Pop from the Iranian Pre-Revolution Generation", an album which had been on relatively continuous loop in the studio whilst TOY and Dan were working on new material.

After weeks of obsessing over this one song in particular, they decided to cover it and make it the next Speedy Wunderground recording.  TOY took the basic chord pattern of the original track and made it their own.  Natasha then dropped by the studio, heard the track and loved it and started re-working the lyrics (after having them translated) and the melody.  The entire recording was completed in 5 hours.  The speediest Speedy Wunderground yet.

In keeping with the label’s ‘manifesto’ the single was recorded live in the dark with smoke and lazers and features the Swarmatron http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJyub78p924.  It was produced by Dan Carey in his South London studio throughout a night and mixed the following day.

On the previous Speedy Wunderground recording session the ‘label ruling’ of ‘no lunch break’ had to be relaxed during recording when members of the Archie Bronson Outfit complained of hunger.  A similar rule-breaking episode occured during their third recording when a rough edit of the track was taken to TOY’s Field Day afterparty and played out to much delight from the crowd before final mixing of the song the following day.

The label released their first single, ‘I Go Out’ by Steve Mason & Emiliana Torrini in February which was followed by the second release, ‘I Was A Dead Duck’ by Archie Bronson Outfit in May.

The track comes in two different versions, with the ‘Beats’ version being more stripped down obviously. “Can’t Love You More” on the flip drives on a catchy vocal and goes more toward the (deep) house spectrum, but with a punchy kick to keep that dancefloor going. On moving to Canada from his original home of Haïti, pianist and singer/songwriter Henri-Pierre Noel brought with him much of the tropical island’s influences. Henri is an incredibly versatile musican who uses the piano in a very percussive and syncopated way, almost like a drum. This particular technique naturally brings disco and afro-jazz elements into his unique brand of “Kompa Funk”. 

In 2012, Wah Wah 45s re-mastered and re-issued Henri-Pierre Noel’s debut LP from 1979, “Piano”, to huge critical acclaim. Whilst doing so, Canadian producer Moonstarr discovered a couple of previously unreleased cuts recorded in the same session way back when. Henri-Pierre Noel’s versions of the the Walter Murphy disco classic “A Fifth Of Beethoven” and the soul/jazz standard “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” are fire for the dance floor filled to the brim with the man’s tradmark keys, funky bass and afro flavoured percussion.

These exclusive recordings are sure to start many a party this summer, and set the scene perfectly for Henri’s UK visit this July – the highlight surely being a full London show at The Jazz Cafe on Saturday July 13th!
