Paula Tape The Lot NYC (recorded FEB2024)

As the days are slowly getting warmer and longer, I am extremely excited to have one of my favourite figures of the German music scene on board to deliver the proper soundtrack for that sun-drenched vibe in the form of a brand new Messy Mix. Tom Hessler, better known as Der Assistent, released one of my favourite records of 2024 with the mesmerizing “Amnesie am Amazonas”. The whole album is a fascinating tropical, relaxing new age trip and I was obviously longing for the man to extend that vibe in the form of a mixtape. And of course, Mr. Hessler understood the assignment. 

Welcome to “The Blue Hour”. Originally Deer Assistent wanted to call the mix „Blue Hour on a River“ to cover up the fact that it is “just another Balearic-sundown-mix” as he says. But then it went through a little change as he explains: “Since I realized there are a few river-themed songs in this it made total sense. The idea wasn’t exactly Avantgarde but conceptually waterproof: To go down a figurative stream of water during the blue hour while listening to 60 minutes of music that had been chosen because they sounded „blue“ to me. However when I got asked for the accompanying photos and videos for social media, which are sadly and seemingly necessary today to promote music, I realized that I only had visual material that had the mediterranean as a backdrop. No rivers whatsoever. Just holiday photos and a sweet video of a chill cat watching the Cretan sunset.”

Maybe it is now just “The Blue Hour“ mix but that doesn’t make this laidback selection by Der Assistent less tempting. This soothing 60-minutes selection includes some rare tunes that his buddy DJ norm gave me when Tom visited him and his partner DJ Linda Vista to play Brussels a while ago. And whether you got a river close to you or now - you won’t regret listening to this wonderful selection. Thanks for assisting me with this one.

Messy Mix 24 | The Blue Hour (by Der Assistent)

Ciao, amici amanti della disco! Summer has started and I kindly invite you all for a little dance tonight. Yeah, that feels kind of strange since the world seems more on fire than ever… but maybe that’s also a necessary reminder that there are still great things worth living for. And if you ask me, a good night of Italo Disco sweetness is definitely such a thing. And that’s why I decided to dedicate an entire Messy Mix to this odd sub genre of synth pop. 

However, obviously I’m not a real pioneer here because over here in Germany that revival is already in full swing. Italo Disco parties gain more and more attention in Berlin. I mean there’s even one happening at Berghain and you are actually allowed to not wear black for this (at least, nobody stopped me when I went there with a batik shirt on). And while some music revivals are questionable, this one is extremely welcomed by me.

There’s a naive beauty and simple joy in this sound. It’s the sweet spot in music history when making sounds became easier due to the invention of synthesizer while it still relied on a certain creative skill set, resulting in profound musicians creating catchy hooks - but often in a quite cringe setting. But they all loved pop music and made you dance and smile. And this mixtape is trying to catch exactly that spirit - with all the fun and flaws from 80s italo disco.

The majority of these tracks are indeed odd tunes from the 1980s, every now and then there’s an contemporary edit of a classic in there, and also a track from the great Nuvo Testamento since these folks really now how to make a track from today sound like one from the heydays of Hi-NRG. But apart from that, I’ve kept this set quite old school. Have fun with it, dance through the sun with a smile on your face and maybe a glass of Aperol in your hand. Arrivederci.

Messy Mix 26 | Alta Energia: An Italo Disco Extravaganza

Friends, we’re right in the middle of the sweet spot of seasons, between a cosy full blooming spring and the unbearable heat waves of the summer. That calls for quality time outside with your loved ones - and if you’re in need for a proper soundtrack here, don’t scroll any further because Berlin-based DJ @jini-piju got you covered in the form of the 25th edition of my MESSY MIX series.

In a lucky coincidence spring is also Jin’s favourite season so she was more or less destined to create this hour of delicate tunes to match with the current vibe. “I stumbled upon this track called „spring has sprung“ by SOYUZ (СОЮ3), Asha Puthli & Sven Wunder,” she explains the origins of the set. “I find it very beautiful so it was clear to me that it has to be the intro to this mixtape to set the right vibe reflecting how everything’s coming alive again.”

Jini defines the spring season as a punch of energy: “For me it’s all about cruising around with my bike, experiencing the city in a drift, feeling the wind on my skin & enjoying how the sun tickles out the first freckles on my nose. It’s the start of endless sessions in the park, cuddling on meadows, running through fields. I want you to listen to this with a breeze in your hair, with friends in nature or at the beach. I want you to feel the primavera drift & come with me on a messy, but funky ride starting with some slow RnB, picking up on some balearic tunes, introducing a finishing touch of banging disco & one of my favorite deep house tracks.”

Needless to say, I’m all in for riding along her Primavera Drift. This MESSY MIX is the sweetest kind of musical messiness and I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I do. Besides being a great house music DJ and a part of the @diskoflausch collective, Jini also runs a great weekly morning show on Cashmere Radio which goes by the name “Sunrise Serenade” and is also extremely recommendable listening material. Check it out and may you enjoy as many tender spring dates with your loved ones as possible.

Messy Mix 25 | Primavera Drift (by Jini Piju)

Hey friends. Summer is still in full swing (in Germany it’s a bit of a rainy swing so far) and that calls for a fitting Messy Mix. And for the 27th episode I got a true expert on board when it comes to laidback sunny tunes - Christian Beetz from Hamburg, better known in the Soundcloud-verse as @frwctrl (“frequency without control”). He’s been around the scene since the 90s, working as DJ, music blogger and passionate record collector. Right now he’s regularly throwing a “Baleraric Disco Yachtride” boat party in Hamburg and that definitely sounds like an event I should catch whenever I’m in town the next time.

Since Christian’s Soundcloud is loaded with hundreds of delightful mixes for various moods, his involvement in the MESSY MIX series has been a longtime wish of mine. Of course, his hour of selected sounds comes with a summer theme and became a musical tribute to the special lighting conditions on Fuerteventura throughout the day from sunrise to sunset. “I have spent my summer holidays on this island over the last 10 years in a row and I was there for the first time back in the early 80’s,” Christian explains. “The special lighting conditions on the island fascinate me since the first time, so I tried to capture the individual light situations throughout the day in a mix.” 

The result is a selection that starts smooth and relaxing but gains a bit speed throughout its run. Truly a great after hour soundtrack or one for hot summer days. Let me just say, it also works extremely well if you don’t happen to stay onFuerteventura. The set is now up and running on the Messy Mix Soundcloud page. Messy Mix 27 | Feelin' For The Light (by frwctrl)

We can’t deny it anymore, friends… The summer season entered its final stage and that is a time that tends to always make me a bit melancholic. Luckily I’m not the only one who feels that way and for those of you who need some musical comfort, I got just the right Messy Mix for you, delivered by a true hero of mine - Mr. @joemorris from Leeds.

Joe has been an essential figure in the contemporary Balearic house and electronica scene, running the great label Shades Of Sound Records with plenty of sweet releases in that field, including his own ones. He released a new album called “Some Kind of Paradise” this summer which I enjoyed during the warmer days of the season. It’s a wonderful selection of 90s trip hop, downtempo, and modern Balearic electronica and I love it. Same goes for his monthly radio show on “Loose FM”... needless to say - I’m a huge fan and I kindly recommend you to check out his Soundcloud as soon as possible.

So, obviously I’m very thrilled to have Joe on board for this laidback new Messy Mix which goes by the title “Last Rays Of Summer.” According to him this set is a “collection of moods and sound palettes to compliment the last rays of summer as they melt into the first shafts of autumnal light.” And yeah, it definitely transports that atmosphere in a very warm and wonderful way. It makes that whole transitional process a lot easier and I hope you’ll enjoy this soothing selection of music as much as I do.
