Nothing wrong about a proper pool party, right? Following the last more mellow mixtapes here I decided to shake things a bit up with my latest Messy Mix and provide a proper mood-lifter that takes us right back to the heydays of late 90s hedonism. Let me invite you to a posh pool party with way too cool people that takes place somewhere in 1998. While I was clearly too young and too uncool to ever get invited to such a celebration I always envisioned it as a place where slick house music grooves would be playing so that’s why I compiled these tunes from around ‘95 to ‘98. So this set ended up including legendary producers like Dave Morales, Tony Humphries, Mousse T., Bob Sinclair and Danny Tenaglia. You’ll find a few legendary pop smashers in there as well, just in a different musical form.

Even without the pool party context this selection represents a sound I’ve been digging a lot lately. Maybe there’s a nostalgic notion in there as well, maybe it’s the summer. Well, I’ll leave the interpretation up to you. Until then: Grab a drink, enjoy the summer days and dream yourself away to a better place.

London-born and Tokyo-based, Max Essa has spent over two decades crafting lush, melodic soundscapes that blur the lines between balearic, cosmic disco, and ambient pop. Emerging in the '90s on Warp and Paper Recordings, he found his true artistic stride after relocating to Japan in 2008. Since then, Essa has become a central figure in Tokyo’s underground scene, curating events like Zim Zam Zu! at Bar Bonobo and releasing music on labels such as Music For Dreams, Hell Yeah!, and Is It Balearic?

Essa’s style is warm, escapist, and deeply cinematic-often inspired by specific places: Okinawan beaches, Mediterranean ferries, or late-night Tokyo rooftops. His releases, like Lanterns, When I'm Homeward Bound, and The Clean Trip (with David Harks), radiate nostalgia and serenity, wrapped in silky synths and timeless grooves.

Beyond producing, Essa curates, mentors, and connects cultures-compiling Japanese ambient gems on Oto No Wa, together with Ken Hidaka and Dr Rob, and spotlighting local artists through interviews and collaborations. Whether on record or behind the decks, Max Essa invites listeners into a world where emotion, space, and memory guide the rhythm.

DJ Harvey has been on his disco horse, riding the plains for some time, carving out a specific lyrical and influential path that many have tried to follow. Harv always shows up ready to get down, and this day was no exception. Enjoying the comedy of our car service adventures, picking up threads of conversation from the week before in Cali, and debating where and what to eat, he is present and good to go. Of late Harvey has been very busy, travelling for gigs worldwide, bringing the Locussolus project to completion, and attending to an increasingly broad range of remix duties and new material. It is always fun to have a friend drop by and play some tunes, even better when they cover such a broad range with energy and grace. Thanks Harv! Now if we can just get a cab to get us to the restaurant.

Manchester native Andi Hanley was for years one of the great things about NYC, charming, low-key, a great great DJ, he quietly was a graceful presence in the land of the overhyped and ego driven. For years Andi held down the music supervision for Rock Star games and was responsible for a lot of great music getting out to the gaming masses, Andi also was a vital member of Body and Soul, for years doing the warm up and setting the sound palette for Danny, FK, and Joe. Andi has since moved back to Manc, and is currently on the hunt for his own space to install his system and set up a proper party. (tell us when chief!) We are happy to have this great set from him, and we are also happy to have the great Disques Town drawing he did for us!

Prins Thomas, the man from Norway, has been DJ'ing producing and remixing at a steady pace since the late 90's. One of the more celebrated figures in contemporary dance music, T has come a long way from his start as a break dancer and musician in a range of bands. He runs several labels, most notably Full Pupp, has released several lps ( 2 solo, 2 with frequent collaborator Lindstrom ) has an extensive discography (understatement) and has been touring worldwide sharing extended dynamic sets that are an amalgamation of disco, house, cosmic, psychedelic and balearica. T is the biz, he keeps it deep, fresh and intimate. As you are reading this T is bringing his Orchestra - The Prins Thomas Orchestra - to Istambul for some live shows. Mix of the Week #603: Sentinel Island Disco

Prop Joe aka Harlan, record collector and DJ from Sydney, Australia brings us a 90 minutes of upbeat tunes. On this mixtapes Prop Joe shows us his dancier side compared to his usual selections. 

Prop Joe has recently been collecting and playing slower stuff in Reggae, RnB, Street Soul, Downtempo etc., but holds a general love for anything that gets the feet moving. He plays around  Sydney with some regular local gigs and the odd party, while also been running his own mix series under 'Music for Ears' for the last 3+ years and infrequently host events under the same name.
