MEXA returns to it's harder roots and sound with the latest from Vegas' own lords of the dark and underground, Spacebyrdz and Justin Baulé. 

'Devil Drugs' is just as doomed and dangerous as the title suggests. Hypnotic voodoo rhythms lure you in while heavy haunting unyielding penetrating percussion hits hard to take you to that other level. The mesmerizing perilous male vocal is none other than the reading of an infamous quote from Paul McCartney on his experience with LSD, and just as the drug does, this track will take you on a trip. Perfect for heavy twisted late night vibes, this track is an instant go to for late night or heavy dance floor heaters. 

'Fuego Contenedor' keeps that same darker vibe but pulls you in more passively. While still maintaining that tech core, there's a much more subtle and sexy approach to its hardness. Highlighted with more spacey synths, the track builds slowly to a deeper darker eerie vibe. 

The EP closes out with 'Too Close', sampling the classic favorite 'Too Close' by NEXT from the height of the R&B days, the second that familiar beat and vocal comes in it becomes an instant feel good favorite. The way they cut up the vocal sample and give it edge with heavy synths takes the bouncy track to adopt that harder eerier vibe evident on their first two.

Following on from the quite exceptional and deservedly praised Xummer Xampler Volume II comes the latest installment from Alex Rubio's always on-point MEXA imprint; the no-less stunning Noise Within Us EP from returning party, Nicola Cruz. 

Cruz, of course, played a pertient role in the aforementioned Xummer Xampler thanks to the wonderfully sophisticated and dexterous offering that was deep house gem ''Neon'' – and it's safe to say he comes up with the goods again this time around. 

Indeed, the EP wastes no time in getting down to business courtesy of the title track, a colourful, sultry, house inclined affair that very literally makes all the right noises. The ghoulish vocals might provide the most obvious standout moments, but it's the eerie, pervasive synth lines that really help it shine. One for the more twisted side of the night, that's for sure. 

''What You Mean to Me'' might be crafted on a more uplifting and positive edge, but it too is draped in emphatic, memorable tones. A clever amalgamation of off-kilter sounds and various other tidbits, it shimmies and sways and boasts all the hallmarks of a producer at ease with the production process. Wonderful stuff with a vague crossover, albeit still discerning, sound. 

The percussion laced ''Part Of Them'' makes for a lovely akltrnative to sounds elsewhere, while its sonic synths help to give it an extra sheen. The last laugh is then left to bonus track ''La Llorona'', a wonderfully harmonious and melodic track that celebrates the label's Mexican origins whilst also injecting the package with an unlikely (and quite inspired) ending. What's more, the good people at the label have offered it out as a free download too. 

Much of MEXA's success has been built upon their penchant for unlikely sounds and their sheer refusal to be pigeonholed. Delightfully, it's a trait that explored again with trademark excellent here.

''Endless Road'' is another track that's as unpredictable as it is enticing, with its rich chord structure and its many melodic bursts bringing a heavy dose of colour to the table. That they're offset with a deep, humming bassline only adds to the tangible appeal that abounds throughout.

Re:Axis & Kohra team up here for a stunning and haunting saunter through the realms of captivating house music. The latest duo to join the MEXA imprint, the boys certainly seem to have their finger on the pulse if the results of the Polar EP are anything to go by.
 
Draped in menace and pulsating hues from start to finish, the title track is first up, and it leads us on a merry dance that’s brimming with smile-inducing delights and more than a fair dose of atmospheric bliss to boot. A true groover from the get-go, this is the sort of canny fare that’ll slay the dancefloor regardless of where it’s allowed to run riot.
 
Vitor Munhoz turns the heat up to 11 on his remix of the latter, whereby the spiky synths and the tech-fuelled palette lend the track a new, glistening sheen. The second of ReAxis & Kohra’s original is ‘’Sensation’’. This time around, the duo opt for a harder edged sound, with a chorus of white noise and some well placed cosmic tinges helping to give this one a sort of cosmic dimension. Culminating the EP is Lauro Viotti, who turns in a stunning remix of ‘’Sensation’’. More downtrodden than its bigger brother, it tugs on the emotions but ultimately lets just the right amount of light to filter in. Another sure fire winner from the MEXA camp, ReAxis & Kohra are most certainly worth keeping an eye on in 2014.

For the label’s latest outing, it’s Rubio himself who takes the reins, as he teams up with Mr.Fresco for a release that’s typical of the label: different, intriguing, eclectic and stunning from the first beat to the last.
 
It’s the majestic title-track that opens the EP, with its varied synths and its washy pads stirring up a track that joins the dots between home and club listening with distinction. A real tightrope walker, its straddles the genres but keeps our attention firmly intact thanks to its many unlikely tones – with even an electric guitar finding favour.
 
The first of three remixes arrives thanks to German producer Marc Poppcke. Poppcke opts for a different approach, with an intense range of percussion and a muffled, almost convoluted bassline among its prime moments. Daring but effective - it’s indicative of Poppcke at his most devastating.
 
Maher Daniel (another producer who’s really come to prominence of late), lets the drums do the talking on his off-kilter remix, before Nicola Cruz leads us on a late-night journey down the rabbit hole that’s filled with hypnotic melodies, whirling melodies and a multilayered vocal that breathes a tangible human edge into the track. It’s gorgeous stuff – and a fitting finale to a truly spectacular effort.
