Upon receiving this week’s Disquiet Junto assignment—“imagine your favorite instrument is dreaming while it sleeps — what does it sound like?” I instinctively thought of yawning, and imagined to which tone that would equate in electronic instruments. In Indo-Iranian languages, such as Sanskrit, the vocalization, “a-o-m,” or ‘om,’ would be the natural sound that comes from the throat and mouth upon its opening and closing—with voicing, of course.

Accordingly, I made the base tone of my composition to note, C3, as it seems to be the central key upon which samples and subsequent synthesis are built—and the note which my keyboards and synthesizers would ‘utter’ were they to yawn with their fictitious ‘mouths.’

I widened my perception of what an “instrument” can be: rather than focusing on one discrete sound-making unit in my studio, I envisioned the entire studio as my ‘instrument,’ and, thus, utilized it to its fullest in composing this piece. I played and recorded nearly each instrument I own at the predetermined C3 note and built a composition [in the key of C harmonic minor] upon that. I usually weave found sounds into my compositions, so I included a submarine’s sonar ping [http://www.soundsnap.com/submarine_sonar_ping_military_single_military_blastwavefx_09678] to accentuate the piano and percolating synth parts in the background.

I named the piece after my studio—Intro/Ergo, and added the present tense Latin verb, 'sum,' to reflect my studio's state of 'beingness,' as it is to be represented in this piece.

"Intro Ergo Sum" [disquiet0181-instrumentaldream]

I used my Fender Classic Player Jazzmaster for this, the guitar I learned how to make music on. Technically it was my second guitar but I think I got rid of the first guitar before I even got this one, and I certainly didn't know how to play it. I almost used Ableton's Operator FM synth, but my Jazzmaster will always be my real favorite instrument. Anyway, I messed around with some whole tone scale licks on the high frets, with tons of chorus, delay and reverb, and recorded about 30 seconds of it. I dragged the file into Ableton and slowed it down 200% and then added a lot more chorus, delay, and (reverse) reverb. Nobody ever wants to play whole tone stuff with me, and I figured since they use it for dream sequences and flashback scenes on sitcoms and family movies, that this was a good time to use some. Also, it doesn't sound much like very pleasant dreams, and while I don't think I've ever had real nightmare, I usually have very disorienting and perplexing dreams, especially around this time of year. So perhaps my Jazzmaster has dreams like that too.

**Production Notes**

My favorite musical instrument? Hm. What first came to mind was my computer. I dig the possibility of „painting with sound“; and the computer makes the task so much easier for me. I adore good instrumentalists, but that‘s just not me. Also, my computer continues to surprise me, especially when I let go of the control on a digital musical system (such as Reaktor, MAX / MSP etc). 

The ensemble I chose was Reaktors „Metaphysical Instrument“. Set up some sine waves as an atmosphere, then a voice sings „Der Mond ist aufgegangen“ (backwards) - an traditional german lullaby, which has vaguely to do with the assignment. 

Next night I’ll record my computer while I’m sleeping. Maybe it makes funny noises.

0615 Disquiet Junto 181 Die goldnen Sternlein prangen

this week's disquiet junto is a one of those where using a modular makes it easy - with modular pretty much every session is you trying to impose your vision onto the instrument and usually ending up in the exact opposite, the instrument leading you into its own dream. one of the most important things i learned from it is to sometimes stop and listen to what the instrument itself is trying to say.

i played with the modular last night but it wasn't that interesting, so i'm going to cheat a little and post a modular track recorded 3 years ago - it is the original name though, a modular having a dream. in big part because it was one of those patches mostly playing itself with almost no interaction from me.

Coincidentally, I have been working on something since earlier this week that fits this weeks assignment perfectly. Normally I wouldn't post a work in progress or something not initiated by the project but this is just too interesting not to. I've even been using the working title "Dream" since Tuesday or Wednesday. 
In my work I rely heavily on randomness and serendipity so it is very inspirational when coincidences like this happen.

I played notes in G harmonic minor on my Yamaha through an echo pedal and looped the tail end of several random echo trails. Simultaneously, there was some light arp playing from my MicroKorg. Recorded live, no multi tracks.

the PERSON, the SOUND : Since 1985, Philadelphia-born Michael has composed and released hundreds of audio recordings, and published dozens of [erotic] poems.

His 'sonic-sojourn' began suddenly when he was just a teen -- feet splashing rhythmically through puddles leftover by a seaside rainstorm. Having just parted ways with the then-love-of-his-life, Michael composed his first ballad [and first song] ever -- "Tina." He rushed to his beach-side home to record his visceral 'awakening' on a tiny micro-cassette recorder, and vowed -- from that day on -- to create art for the rest of his life.

He began zealously amassing used music equipment, and had built a modest home recording studio by age seventeen, all the while crafting simple pop, ambient, and experimental works that HE had wanted to listen to -- that HE had wanted to hear, affectionately emulating the works of his then-idols, Duran Duran and Brian Eno.

Now, decades later, he has relocated to a small village outside Atlanta, Georgia, and continues to voraciously attend to his dream as a young, heartbroken boy -- to create and release music that he, himself, wants to hear.

Although no longer sequestered to pop and ambient musics, Michael's signature sound has merged the two, having integrated the R&B, hiphop, and psychedelia he has grown to love as a older gent -- having absorbed the edgy rhythms and dreamy soul of the southern United States (Atlanta and Miami).

Michael still puts forth ample amounts af ambient musics, but his recent 'sound' hovers elsewhere -- somewhere amidst the genres of vaportrap, spacerock, and trip-hop.
