Wandering aimlessly
with this
gray, old horse,
given to me
to foster.
Both tired,
worn out
by this life
of barren effort -
seeming without
aim and purpose.

Holding it
by a rope,
trotting without direction.
He halts sometimes
to nibble on stones.

We arrived
in a tiny village,
where even the
road seems to end.
Here we should rest.
No people,
no signs of life.
I let the horse
nibble on the stones,
and fell asleep
under a tree.

Returning from my sleep,
it feels like
I’m still dreaming.
In front of me,
a white, proud stallion -
free and sovereign,
shimmering in the sun.

The old grey horse,
the rope -
all gone.

Pegasus is waiting
now for me,
to awaken from my slumber,
to jump on his back,
and take our first ride
up to the heavens.

I didn't know -
or did I know -
that in this village
which space, time and men
have long forgotten,
there was a custom:
you leave a stone
beside a horse,
and in return
you’ll find
the most precious gift
fated for you.

Grace showered me
once more with gifts:
with my awakening,
and with Pegasus
who knows the way

I jump on my stallion.
