Beyond the horizon... Across the Ocean...

The ocean — both wild and calm, dangerous and beautiful — is made up of majesty and mystery, and it is indeed a force of nature we stood in awe. While we may appear very small to such greatness of the ocean, human endeavors and emotions can be powerful. Beyond the horizon of the sea, we may have someone dear to one's heart. Especially during this stressful year, it's important to reflect on all of the kinship, blessings, and emotions you miss. So I wrote this piece of music and made this clip, dedicating it to all the people who love the ocean and miss their loved ones who may be missing you across the ocean.

Japan - Tokyo Theme - Version 1

Collaborated with Hollywood Music Workshop 2017

Inspired by gameplay of Kingdom Hearts Series, the music was composed based on the narritive of the game. 
In the game, there is a main hero named, Sora, who is a keyblade master that travles to different world of fantasy and save them from the darkness.
In this piece, I tried to capture an essence of mystery, valiancy and unexpected danger.

What Lies Beneath

Anybody can relate to stressful works, drinking energy drinks, and staying up late. "Gyugyukyakya" (뀨뀨꺄꺄) is an animation where our main character meets her cute yet deadly friends (?) in this deserted dream world that she created. Will our hero able to wake up from her dreamy nightmare?

This is a collaborative-composition with Ho Ling Tang, a great composer and a friend from Hong Kong, came up with the theme(1:04~2:37). Together, we put created a music for the narrative of the animation.

Recording Session organized by Hollywood Music Workshop 2018

"Celles et Ceux des Cimes et Cieux" is a form of a trailer for a fantasy animation. 
An astray, young boy from the village of Giant Tree meets two unlikely companions who will help him to go back home. They go through many dangers and wonders together. Would they able to find a way to the Village of Giant Tree? Perhaps, there will be another great, and heroic tale to come.

With an approval by Gwenn Germain, the animator of the "Celles et Ceux des Cimes et Cieux," the rescoring the animation project was one of the exciting projects that I have done so far.

Also, the Hollywood Music Workshop provided the amazing opportunity to record this project. The work was recorded in the Synchron Stage, one of the world-class studios for the scoring, along with a team of Hollywood experts and Vienna Musicians, the entire session was a success.

Finally, my deep gratitude to Mr. Germain for his permission, and the entire faculty of Hollywood Music Workshop and the Synchron Stage who supported and led the recording session successfully.

Celles et Ceux des Cimes et Cieux (Rescore)

This piece is inspired by series of the Korean folk music such as the Chestnut Song (군밤타령), Nyl-lee-lee-ya(늴리리야), and Arirang (아리랑). These songs have been practiced and sang for a long time, bringing people together, relishing a good harvest, and celebrating a harmonious nature and spirit.

However, Korea is now separated into two, communist North Korea, and republic South Korea, divided and victimized by the political and historical reasons, both nations share the pain of separation and broken families. 

However, it is my strong belief that our proud Korean spirit still remains, and it still on-going determination for both nations to be reunited and rejoice the harmony once we shared.

By composing Korean melody with the orchestral palette, it is my sincere hope for all Korean people, to honor the good spirit, cherish the heritage, and spread the goodwill which can influence people all around the world as well.

Los Angeles Film Conducting Intensive (LAFCI) is a workshop to train art of conducting and provide an education and resources to help media composers succeed on the podium. A team of great faculties was there to teach such as Angeles Velez, Conrad Pope, William Ross, Jorge Mester, Emilie Bernstein, and Carl Rydlund, a Hollywood's best professionals who have a long history of film-music production experiences. Each one of them there to train, discipline, influence, and encourage for all of the LAFCI participants.

As a 2019 LAFCI fellow, I was privileged to compose, conduct, and record my personal work at the Eastwood Recording Stage, Burbank, USA. It will remain as one of my memorable experiences, and I would highly recommend this workshop for those who wish to improve their art of conducting and work ethics as a film, media, and game composer.

Title: Brother Tiger (호랑이형님)

San-goon, a powerful tiger who swore to protect the children of his old master. Despite his prowess, he could not stop the imminent evil, threatening the balance and tranquility of the world. To ensure the safety of the children, and the new hope for peace, San-goon fights for the noble deeds, even if costs his life. 

Brother Tiger (호랑이형님) is a graphic novel written by Sang Gyu Lee (이상규) from South Korea. It presents many mythical creatures, deities, and demons which have an origin from Korea, Manchuria, China, and Mongal, narrates an epic tale of our heroes with an authentic cultural portrayal.

Inspired by this magnificent saga, my latest composition shaped around by the tale of San-goon, the noble and loyal tiger, where many of leitmotifs and musical texture have the oriental spirit.

Born in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, Michael W. Choi is a Korean-American composer, conductor, and filmmaker specialized in writing music for film, animation, games, and new media.

He graduated from the Berklee College of Music: Valencia Campus, receiving a Master's degree in Scoring for Film, Television, and Video Games. His skills include musical composition, arrangement, orchestration, conducting, mixing, and experience in film production skills. He worked with independent directors and artists in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He co-founded a student film production group called KUT Film Production, directing and producing short feature films.

He is currently based in Seoul, South Korea, working as a professional producer, music director, and composer for film, animation, video games, and new media.
