James Bay - Stealing Cars

I wrote this one with a dear friend of mine named Jennifer Hanson. A deeply personal song for both of us, it was one of those important days when you do your best to set aside any awareness of the outside world and just be honest, be honest, be honest. "To gain your own voice, you have to forget about having it heard" – Allen Ginsberg. I truly believe that. The initial thought, “you're breaking your own heart”, smacked me across the face while I was sitting at a red light on Wedgewood and 8th Ave in Nashville near Grimey's Used Music. It hit me like a lightning bolt. Such an obvious idea, but I'd never heard it said quite like that. The next day I was writing with Jennifer and after talking for a few hours about life in general I suddenly realized this idea was exactly what we were talking about. We wrote the song and a few weeks later Kelly Clarkson heard it and recorded it, which was a shock. She put it on her album, Stronger and I love what she did with it. It was so rewarding to see a song which came from such a pure, uncommercial place go on to connect in a larger context and with an artist we both have tremendous respect for.  Kudos, Mr. Ginsberg.

Breaking Your Own Heart

Every now and then I book an isolated cabin in the woods. No phone, no internet, no TV, no radio. Nothing. Just silence. And a guitar. I take down or cover up all the clocks, anything that reminds me of the existence of Time. And then I write. And it's always incredibly productive on many levels. This song was born on one such trip (operation isolation I call it), looking out the 2nd story window of this little cabin in the middle of nowhere and the image that stayed in my mind while writing it was a picture I'd once seen of a young woman laying weeping in front of a tombstone in a military cemetery. It was such a powerful image to me. “No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader”, Robert Frost once said. I don't know if that's true or not, but it makes a lot of sense to me.

Look Out Your Window

Wrote this one after a friend told me a story about this little old couple she saw walking along the beach. She talked to them and they'd been married for something like 40 years and were still acting like a couple of love-struck kids, walking along the water holding hands. But here's the kicker...when they went to get into their car, he knelt down and brushed the sand off her feet with this little brush he had along for just that purpose. Now call me a sucker and a sap, but that got me. It made me think about how the mystique and intrigue of a woman isn't something that can fade with age, it's a timeless truth, an essence, an ideal which doesn't have an expiration date...and that little old lady was still a mystery to that man, or at least that's what I took away from it. That's a bit cheesy I know. A guy came up to me one time after a show and said, “You're a romantic fool, don't ever give it up”. Fair enough my friend. Duly noted.

Mystery

Nothing can knock you on your ass quite like Love. Just about all of us have been blind-sided by the inconvenient, ill-timed, perfectly miserable condition of falling in love. And it's often just after you've determined that it's just not for you in general, that it hits you the hardest. That's the idea out of which this song was born and I had a blast writing it and recording it. Recording the gang vocals, which are always a good time, was especially fun on this one. It's tough to have a bad day (or keep a straight face) when you're standing around a mic with a bunch of friends yelling, “Here comes love”, at the top of your lungs.

Ready Or Not

Written out of darkness, personal struggle and a resolve to move toward a better place, St. Christopher, named metaphorically for the patron saint of travel, is truly about a journey, the beginning of a journey at least. It's about the quiet resolve to begin moving out of the difficult place you've been, towards something new. A half-whispered prayer for help along the way.

Berlin producer Robot Koch is back for his third full length release, “The Other Side”.

Although Robot Koch has an international reputation as being "One of Europe`s finest producers of the beat generation" (Low End Theory), he is much more than just a beatmaker… “(Post)-dubstep infused Electronic Hip Hop“ is far too constrained a label to understand what this producer is all about. Instead of following the sound of his previous albums “Death Star Droid” ("Essential listening" - Bobby Friction BBC) and “Songs For Trees and Cyborgs“ ("Music for a modern age that has rarely sounded so good” - Boomkat), Koch takes the genre defying ingredients from these previous records to another level. There still are some of those “Galactic ten ton beats and space age melodies“ (Dazed and Confused) that made the previous albums staple drops in the playlists of Mary Anne Hobbs, Starkey, Daedelus and Gaslamp Killer to name a few, but there is a new dimension to Koch`s production and songwriting that didn’t show on his previous records.

The cinematic vibe of tracks like “Nitesky”, the quirky and moody feel of “Bugs” and the electricity of “Tapedeck” show how Koch more than ever manages to create intimate and timeless pieces of music that are soulful, deep, mysterious and that will appeal to fans of cutting edge Electronica and modern pop music alike. This is the most personal record of Robot Koch to date. Instead of going for big name features Koch teamed up with lesser know artists like Kansas based vocal talent John LaMonica, long time friend and theatre composer Nielson and mexican singer/songwriter Graciela Maria to find the right voices for his compositions. John LaMonica infuses his whimsical and heartfelt melodies that breathe an air of darkness and nostalgia with Koch`s fresh and forward thinking instrumentals to create something that fans of Radiohead, The XX and Jamie Lidell should not sleep on.

”I`m glad John contacted me, we were thinking of collaborating on one song for my album but it ended up being five songs, they were all fantastic and helped me find the right direction for ‘The Other Side’.”

After the release of the John Robinson collaboration album (“Robot Robinson” – Project Mooncircle) earlier this year, it seems surprising how extensive Robert’s output is, but don’t be mistaken, this album is a longer term project than just releasing the songs Koch made in the last year. Some of the songs found on “The Other Side” were made seven years ago.

”I didn’t know what to do with songs like ‘Bugs’ back then. Now it felt like the time has come to release them, they just made sense with of the most recent stuff I’ve been making and it all fell into place. But it was not an easy album for me to make. The previous albums just came together rather quick but this one was a real mission, something I’ve been trying to do for years and I could never really get it together until now.”

Legendary John Peel (BBC) knew in 2003 already when he said about Koch`s productions "Wonderful and strange, pop music from the future“.
