Short work for string quartet in just intonation. This work uses 17-limit just intonation (although no 13s are present) and the ratios are annotated in the score.

The sounds are from Note Performer (an orchestral instrument library available for use with Sibelius Software) and the microtonal adjustments were made using the pitch bend feature inside of Sibelius.

Microtrauma - Raw Unit // Elected Tunes

Microtrauma is another promissing Act from the Microtonal Camp. The Duo is producing music together already more than 8 years. After crossing nearly every style of electronic music they finally found their destination in technoid sounds naming Stephan Bodzin or Dubfire as their personal heroes. Their Microtonal debut is a very straight one – three primetime tracks full of long delaying uplifting melodies and great basslines. Great development to their last "Collar EP" on Elected Tunes in 2008.

Microtrauma - Calcium // Microtonal Records

This track is an example of a simple twelve bar backing track accompanying a solo melody written in free Just Intonation (JI).

JI allows access to all the frequencies, not just the ones on the piano keyboard or guitar frets. Often musicians when playing the blues, jazz, or guitar solos, bend the string to produce a higher pitch. In this track, there are no 'bent' notes, only precisely specified notes which are often noticeably different to the standard notes from 12-EDO.

Some devices used include:
- No scale - only addressing frequencies (in Hz) directly via whole numbers. E.g. 4, 5, 6 multiplied by 60 Hz would give 240Hz, 300Hz, 360Hz directly.
- Descending harmonic series, e.g. 32, 31, 30, 29, 28, 27, 26, 25, 24, 23, 22, 21, 20, 19, 18, 17, 16
- What sounds like vibrato, but is actually a combination of holding and sliding pitches several times a beat
- Rapid switching of frequency several times a beat, this is a common chip tune device.
- Descending shifting triads, e.g. 61, 54, 47, 56, 49, 42, 51, 44, 37, 46, 39, 32...

Just Intonation is the future for those of us who like both maths and music! I understand that not everyone wants numbers in their music composition. However, that's fundamentally what frequencies are, thats what harmony is, a combination of whole numbers. And you get more interesting results when using the numbers for what they are, which is unique chords well outside of traditional harmony. I am particularly enjoying the sound of the prime numbers 11, 13, 23, 29, 31, 41, 43 and 61 in this composition.

"HEERHORST" is the newest alias of the prolific Hamburg based Techno producer Bastian Heerhorst. With his most known alias "Fukkk Offf" he has toured the World and worked with major artists like T. Raumschmiere, Rammstein, Autodidakt, Oliver Huntemann, Le Castle Vania and many more. Now it's our pleasure to release his latest work on Tiefblau Records as part of our "Black Edition" series. A 4 track EP packed with Originals only. All tested and proven floor bangers. All different from each other showing a wide spectrum of styles inside the Techno aesthetics. "Take Me Down" lends it's name to the title of the EP and sets the mood with plenty of groove, dark atmospheres, guts and weirdness. "Zwitch" is an anthem to Acid Techno. Nasty but simultaneously contained, like a wild tiger in a cage. Sexy, mean and beautiful. No fireworks, just pure TB303 citrus juice! "Diamond Beach" pushes the boundaries again with a pumping rhythm and psychedelic melodies which will make wonders on any peak time DJ set. The closing track of the EP, "Quasar", is again a trip on itself. Tribal and Sci-fi inspirations meet on an epic track which will be played on many Open-Air Parties around the World. Eclecticism at it's best in 1 single EP. Enjoy!

In 1995 simple tracker software got the interest of the two friends Daniel and Ricardo. Thus, they decided to produce a few tracks.
Both shared a common passion for all sorts of different musical styles, which made their early productions very diverse.
Through the many influences of artists from New Order and Depeche Mode to Massive Attack, The Prodigy, Moby and the various techno disciples
of this multi-faceted time, the two of them produced everything they enjoy, be it trip hop, electronica, breaks or techno.

However, in 1999 the two of them went separate ways for reasons of diverging careers.
They quickly lost touch to each other until the contact ceased completely. Yet, the two of them still wished to produce music.
This is why both of them kept working with synthesizers, music software and studio technology creating their own tracks.

In 2003, it was coincidence that brought them back together.
The two friends met again at a small local electro party and soon realised that they still shared the same interest for electronic music as they had four years earlier.
After a few sessions in their domestic living room studios they decided to make more of their hobby and, thus, started renting their first studio in 2005.
Microtrauma was born.

In 2007, Microtrauma had its first release “Wake up“ on the Elected Tunes label. Their first own release “Collar EP” soon was to follow.
Microtrauma has developed its own style from almost ten years of working and tinkering as well as its many influences: melodic, dark, technoid and minimal.
