Suzette Pereira, Ph.D., is an Associate Research Fellow at Abbott leading studies focused on muscle health and muscle loss due to aging.

Dr. Pereira’s research is focused on evaluating nutritional therapies that can prevent muscle and strength declines due to sarcopenia, hospitalization, and chronic diseases. She has led preclinical studies to identify key ingredients (such as HMB) that can prevent muscle wasting.  Her current work is focused on translating the findings from preclinical studies to human clinical studies to help improve nutritional products for adults.

We’ll be talking about sarcopenia, muscle wasting, chronic disease, and muscle loss, general muscle health.

Nathan Raab, the preeminent American dealer in rare documents, is contacted by at least 20 people every day looking to sell historical documents and artifacts. He constantly combs through other dealers’ catalogs and examines lots offered by the top auction houses. Forgeries are common and spotting them is an art in itself, but Nathan Raab’s work transcends the documents and pieces of paper and gets at the heart of what’s been written and by whom. It’s important to work, and it’s the Hunt for History.

That of course is our guest today, Nathan Raab, reading from his excellent new book, The Hunt for History. We’ll be talking to Nathan Raab about much more, including what his business is like day to day, the fascinating story of how he learned to tell the difference between real and forged artifacts, and of many amazing finds that were nearly lost to the ages. HW Brands: The Zealot and the Emancipator Smithsonian Associates, Art of Living Author Interview Series Welcome to  I’m Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #498. As part of our  author interview series, our guest today is author, historian, .  will be presenting at the  program Nov. 20, 2020, and the title of his presentation is  which is the title of H. W. Brands’ new book, which we will be discussing today here on the show. In the mid-19th century, although abolitionists had been working peacefully to end slavery for decades, the most they had achieved was containing its spread in the expanding republic. Then in 1854, the Kansas–Nebraska Act reversed even that, opening two new states to slavery, along with a nor fight at Harper’s Ferry Virginia. That, of course, is our guest today, author, historian,  reading from his new book, . In our interview today, H. W. Brands and I will discuss the complicated New Englander John Brown, who was a charismatic and deeply religious man who’d heard the God of the Old Testament speaking to him, telling him to destroy slavery by any means—including the sword. Meanwhile, in Illinois, Abraham Lincoln was an ambitious lawyer and failed politician who believed that slavery, while surely a sin, was guaranteed in the Constitution. The only way to fight it was by political means. Drawing on his new book The Zealot and the Emancipator, historian H.W. Brands offers a dual portrait of Brown and Lincoln, in a dual portrait as men with profoundly different views on how moral people must respond to our democracy’s most extreme injustice: by incremental change or by radical upheaval? He also examines how historical reckoning finds relevance in today’s political climate. Brands holds the Jack S. Blanton Sr. Chair in History at the University of Texas at Austin. He has written more than a dozen biographies and histories, two of which, The First American and Traitor to His Class, were finalists for the Pulitzer Prize. Welcome to The Not Old Better Show Fitness Friday edition, I’m Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #509.  
Our show today is part of our Fitness Friday series, and it’s another great one in our Fitness Friday programs.  We’ll be hearing from returning guest, Sabrena Jo.  
While many people gained weight during the lockdowns, others have used the change in routine to eat better and exercise more.  On the Fitness Friday program, we talk with Sabrena Jo about exercise and fitness.  But, with the new year, our new year’s resolutions, after such a brutal 2020, it’s good to look forward and think about what’s to come.  It’s been somewhat of a running joke in a profoundly unfunny time: endless laments about the “quarantine 15” or “Covid 19,” referring to the number of pounds gained during the lockdown.
One of the many challenges of COVID was the abrupt change to day-to-day schedules. People began working from home, if they had worked at all, in many cases joined by their kids. Gyms, recreation centers, and parks closed, curbing exercise routines. Stress levels skyrocketed for many, with baking, eating, and drinking becoming major outlets and means of reward. Indeed, studies show a link between high-stress levels and overeating.
I always love speaking with Sabrena Jo, American Council on Exercise (ACE)  Director of Science and Research, because of her research orientation.  Research, fact-based analysis, and outcomes orientation are critical to our Not Old Better Show audience.  
Today we’ll be speaking about when the environment around you changes and your routine changes, too, you can use it as an opportunity to say, “I am going to treat myself better in these really rough times.”  We’ll talk about a fitness mindset, why it’s so important.  It’s always how you view things, how you position your situation, your sense of self-worth, and how you treat yourself.
You know, together with conscious portion-control and eating better, combined with a simple conscientious fitness routine, it really feels like we’ll be making permanent and positive changes in our lives.
