American music specialist John Edward Hasse surveys the moving and inspiring story of a man who overcame racial, social, and musical obstacles to become one of the 20th century’s greatest musicians. 

Today with us here on The Not Old Better Show, Dr. John Edward Hasse will cover Duke Ellington’s life: his musical influences—including ragtime and dance music—growing up in Washington, D.C., and how he negotiated the city’s strict color line. Also, his breakthrough at Harlem’s Cotton Club; his way of personalizing his compositions for the individual gifts of his players; and his turn to greater spirituality as he got older, which prompted him to compose three Sacred Concerts.

Today we’ll be talking about After the Bible and the Quran, the Bhagavad Gita is the most beloved of sacred texts in the world. Graham M. Schweig, a professor of religion at Christopher Newport University and published translator of the Bhagavad Gita, illuminates some of the exquisite passages in this Hindu philosophical poem and examines their rich narrative context.

He provides an overview of the story behind the text, its major themes, and reveals how a work created around the 2nd century A.D. poignantly addresses the universal problems of the human condition: the intrinsically conflicted soul and the mix of happiness and suffering, goodness and evil, and beauty and horror the world holds. These dichotomies are symbolized by the dilemma of the protagonist Arjuna, whose heart is shattered as he is about to engage in a battle against the evil that also pits him against those he loves. Experience how the Bhagavad Gita’s timeless voice of wisdom and compassion can speak to the challenges of the modern world.

While most works of cinema are produced for mass entertainment and escapism, a unique minority has had a profound impact on our culture. Whether intentionally or not, some movies have brought social issues to light, changed laws, forwarded ideologies both good and bad, and altered the course of American history through their resounding impact on society.
For Marc Lapadula, a playwright, screenwriter, film producer, and senior lecturer in film and media studies at Yale University, among these seminal films are I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang, The Graduate, Jaws, and Philadelphia. We’ll discuss clips from each film and what they reveal, and what they can tell us about the social and political climates in which they were created and their significance today.

I know from my email from you, our dear Not Old Better Show audience, that you all agree with me in that 2020 has been a doozy of a year…in all ways.  And, we’re not done yet!

But, we won’t forget about 2020, and not that we should.  However, there are some, actually many, things we can do proactively to plan for a better 2021, especially when it comes to our finances.

Today we’ll be talking financial planning to make 2021 your best financial year, no matter what 2020 looked like.

The election is over, there are vaccines available for COVID, and maybe we will get back to the way it was – where we can socialize without fear, hug grandparents, shake hands and gather. I wonder if that’s possible.

I hope so, and today we look forward to 2021…expecting a good year and our guests think it’s going to offer us a lot of opportunities to understand and plan financially.

Dr. Teasel Muir-Harmony is the curator of the Project Apollo collection at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum and teaches at Georgetown University. Dr. Muir-Harmony is the author of Apollo to the Moon: A History in 50 Objects and a contributor to the television series Apollo’s Moon Shot, and is our guest today…
On July 20th, 1969, over half the world’s population tuned in to witness Neil Armstrong’s first step on the moon and listen to that amazing audio sequence that “the eagle has landed.” We just listened, of course, as Neil Armstrong radios "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed." Mission control erupts in celebration as the tension breaks, and a controller tells the crew "You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue, we're breathing again."

Despite the jubilance and other outward national appearances, the project was never just about advancing scientific progress. Rather, it was an attempt from the American government to prove the superiority of the western capitalist system over communism and to fight for influence in developing countries.
 
With Cold War tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union at a high, President Kennedy argued that ramping up the space program would inspire global confidence in American excellence. From the 1960s-1970s, US politicians, including Pres. Richard Nixon worked to link global progress with space accomplishments using films, souvenirs, political ads, and other forms of propaganda. Featuring first-hand accounts by Apollo astronauts and interviews with NASA staff, Dr. Teasel Muir-Harmony’s new book, Operation Moonglow paints a riveting picture of the intersection of spaceflight, geopolitics, and Nixon diplomacy during the Cold War.
