For this episode of MMO, we cover the recent movie news as of November 20, 2017 and react to some of the bigger and more interesting stories on the film landscape.  We’ll get serious on some issues, we’ll goof around with others, and we’ll always give you our bizarre brand of back & forth.  We’ll record these reaction pods from time to time, after award nominations are announced and of course, after the award ceremonies themselves.  But there will also be recordings (like this one), where we must comment on news that rocks the industry.  The admitted and alleged sexual harrassments and abuses in Hollywood require a commentary, and we sincerely do our best to discuss it and direct any jokes we have where they belong, on ourselves.

Originally planned as an intro segment to our upcoming Netflix Movie Originals Year in Review, we had much more to say about the news of the film world than we thought, and therefore we chose to dedicate an entire episode to it.  First & foremost however, we MUST start with banter bordering on the ridiculous.  So dreading the upcoming talk on hollywood scandal, we have a little too much fun making puns out of movie titles that either fit our theme, or even dumber, just add “Mike” to the title.  Howbout this one - ‘War For the Podcast of the Mikes’… Anyone?…. Bueller?  ...Bueller?  

In other news, we weigh in on how Jordan Peele’s Get Out will be considered as a Comedy or Musical in the upcoming Golden Globes, and we told you so.  Then we discuss Quentin Tarantino’s new deal with Sony for his upcoming 1969/Manson Family Murders movie and chat about Sony’s history with our favorite flicks that don’t rhyme with -Iderman.  The new Deadpool 2 trailer tickles our fancies like only Ryan Reynolds can.  Wait, that didn’t come out right.  Or maybe it came out just right?  Oh well.  We then offer quick reviews of Justice League and Thor: Ragnarok, as Also Mike hopes to win the friendship of Taika Waititi one podcast at a time.  We ponder whether or not we should buy the $10 per month Movie Pass (which for the record, Also Mike got in the mail after a week & a day btw, shortly after recording).  We discuss the news that Martin Scorsese wants a theatrical release for his big budgeted upcoming Netflix film, The Irishman, and this segways into a broader discussion of the state of the movie industry at large, where we don’t wanna brag, but we blow your minds to smithereens with our endless savvy and infallible wisdom.  You’re welcome.  We call out Bill Simmons, Wesley Morris, and The Ringer for their recent podcast about the state of movies as a launching point, and then we tell all.  Is the TV Apocalypse coming? Early Award Season Update
NY, LA, Critics Choice, and AFI’s Top 10 - 1:01:50

Our second Hollywood Hot Takes episode will catch you up on all biggest movie news and update you on the early Awards Season.  We enjoyed your response to our first Hot Takes episode, and we’re happy to deliver the first of two news and award season updates to prime you for our upcoming Oscar Sprint.  This episode closes with our reactions to how the critics have spoken on their ballots from both coasts and via the Critics Choice Movie Awards.  (Stay tuned as our second podcast of the week will cover the Golden Globes nominations.)

The Mikes of Oscar begin, as usual, deep in outer space.  Quentin Tarantino has pitched J.J. Abrams an idea for the next Star Trek movie, and this alliance has fast tracked it into full thrusted pre-production.  We are giddy, perhaps even Gittes - ugh, that joke looks even worse on paper; and we chat about Tarantino’s career, the Star Trek franchise, and the impact a foul mouthed Spock might have on the industry.

Ridley Scott’s upcoming film, All the Money in the World stars Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Williams, and the esteemed, NOT Kevin Spacey.  So we discuss the bizarre new marketing campaign that features Christopher Plummer, how the film was late for Critics Choice consideration, and Mike #1 delves into movie history for examples of how Hollywood has pulled the old switcheroo.

Covering more headlines, we discuss the firing of Bryan Singer from the upcoming Queen & Freddie Mercury biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody.  We analyze the team behind the new Michael Myers slasher film in the Halloween franchise.  Then we dive into viral videos, as we have a serious chat about how HBO’s Last Week Tonight host, John Oliver crushed Dustin Hoffman in a recent interview.  We cover the recent shake-up at DC Comics and Warner Bros, and then we discuss how Disney and Marvel Studios are trying to own the entire business as they try to acquire Fox properties.  Also, Twin Peaks has been lauded as a great movie.  We rage about this.

In closing, we recap the Award Season after the critics of LA and NY have chosen their year’s best.  We include the recent nominations of the Critics Choice Awards, and discuss the AFI’s top 10 list for the year.  Hopefully, this update primes you for the Golden Globes announcement, and we will cover those new nominations sooner than later in the week.

We wanted to break from the Oscar Sprint Profiles to cover & follow-up on the recent Hollywood News.  If you’re curious how we’re going to transition into the 2018 movie year, we preview our final month of the Award Season coverage, dive into some of the early reactions and our expectations for the upcoming blockbuster Black Panther, and foreshadow another Netflix Original Movies show where we digress into a breakdown of A Future and Stupid Gesture, The Polka King, and we react to the new Duncan Jones/ Alexander Skarsgaard / Paul Rudd sci-fi epic, Mute.

The Times Up movement needed an update, and we wanted to dive into some of the recent allegations as well as follow-up on some of the stories we’ve covered.  We continue the James Franco story, discuss how Casey Affleck bowed out of this year’s Oscars, illuminate our views about the Dylan Farrow allegations against Woody Allen and the recent denunciations from his cast members, and we discuss the Aziz Ansari story.  We also interject our feelings about the film, Marshall during this conversation, and we harken back to the bad old days of Charlie Chaplan and Harvey Weinstein.

Hollywood has reacted to The State of the Union Address, and we debate how the Late Night talk shows covered the event.  Politics are a dicey subject these days, but we do our best to navigate that minefield.  We refuse to hide from it.

Then we can cover some lighter subjects.  The Razzie Nominations came out this past week, and mother! Cast and Crew were nominated to our dismay.  We LIVE TWEETED the SAG awards and review those winners.  MMO will continue to cover those events on social media throughout the rest of the month.  Do stay tuned.

Putting a Bow on the 2017 Oscars - 44:11


We’ve already rehashed the Oscars award by award and given you all the highlights in our Recap Episode No. 49.  This episode No. 50 dives deeper into the big stories coming out of Hollywood’s big night.  We break down some of the major headlines, while also making some of our own.  In true Hollywood Hot Take fashion, we try to get beyond the applause, the congratulations, and the industry posturing to give you a look behind the curtain of this worldwide stage.

The Oscar Scoreboard negated our puzzle theory, but we rehash the overall take for some of the most nominated and acclaimed films from the Academy’s 90th show.  We discuss Lady Bird’s empty hands & The Shape of Water’s place in Oscar History.  Is the big winner a Science Fiction film?  And if not, what is it?  We also ask which big screen stars raised their profiles with their performances upon the small screen.

Our centerpiece topic covers the TV Ratings of the show and the reasons for why they may be dropping.  We dive deep into muddy waters and try to understand the stories behind the ratings.  There’s definitely a gap between perception and reality in how the broadcast transpired.  This opens up our discussion on whether or not the Oscars are political, or if they’re partisan.  We cannot ignore how the media has covered the event, and tough questions must be asked and answered.

Frances McDormand’s speech was perhaps the show’s biggest takeaway.  We discuss the theft of her award at the Governor’s Ball, and then illuminate her final words, “Inclusion Rider,” both the spirit and legality of the phrase.  Finally, we break down the causes and effects of the changes happening in Hollywood regarding representation and equality.  Has it been movement or market driven, or both?  It’s a substantial discourse before we can end with some lighter subjects including what’s next for Jordan Peele.

Our brains break over the newest pay gap scandal involving The Crown, and Movie Pass has lowered its price once again.

The episode also chronicles the news regarding upcoming films, whether it’s the freshly cast or greenlit.  Margot Robbie joins Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Joe Wright & Michael Showalter announce new movies, Jessica Chastain is still being cast in everything good as we’ll happily root for another team up with Octavia Spencer, you’ll be surprised to learn which documentary subject is an early Oscar frontrunner, we’re Team Johnson (that came out wrong?... no it didn’t), Iron Man becomes Doctor Doolittle, and Fox Marvel projects like X:Men get shuffled around by Disney.
