How cool cut hay smells
when carried through the farm gate
as the sun comes up

Nozawa Bonchō was a haikai poet and disciple of Basho who worked as a doctor in Kyoto. Later in life Bonchō distanced himself from Basho’s school and was imprisoned for a crime. He died in 1714.

For this track I made heavy use of Spitfire Audio's LABS Instruments: Soft Piano, Tape Orchestra Strings Flautando and Peel Guitar Ensemble. The field recordings in the background are from LABS' magnificent Tundra Atmos.

Ryōkan Taigu was a Japanese poet and calligrapher who lived during the Edo period. A Buddhist monk who lived much of his life as a hermit, he spent most of his time writing poetry, calligraphy, and communing with nature. His poetry is often very simple and inspired by nature.

As usual, there is an abundance of fantastic pieces to collaborate with. I finally decided on Aaron Hofman's work, because there was something about its slightly off kilter ambience that seemed to suit the later spring rain that is settling in for a few days. I added just a bit of gritty drone, augmented with a bit of reverb to further set the mood.

I chose ‘Unmaking Music’ because of its physical materiality.

I had initially made a first version that contained many different movements on six tracks. That was pretty okay. But then I added some lurking piano - and somehow I felt that Raincat's hammering of whatever was the perfect partner for it. So I removed all the other tracks (only crow field recordings from Vienna remained, also the amplification of a kinda bell-like sounding Raincat “solo”). I didn't try to accompany Raincat, but let him accompany me. Thank you, Raincat, for your track!

I think this waits for a lead instrument. If someone wants to trio: The Piano is now 90bpm and somehow C-ish… (mainly CDCD, sometimes CDGC).
