A mixtape of 80s and 90s Bürger-Highlife from Ghana + Germany 🇬🇭

This is music made by Ghanaians who left the country in the wake of the 1981 military coup, during which there was a 2-year night time curfew and musical instruments were classed as ‘luxury goods’ with a 160% import tax. This sent lots of musicians abroad to Germany, where they fused highlife sonics with the burgeoning reggae, funk and disco sounds that were emerging there, soundtracked by cheap drum machines and synthesisers available on the European market
