Today we're finally uploading our Sao Pauli Summer Mix that we recorded during our stay in Sao Paulo. In this Mix we wanted to catch the vibes of this wonderful and sunny city, where we had such a great time!

It wasn't our goal to create a DJ Set that represents our club oriented sound. Instead we wanted to reflect the good times and the music from our warm days and nights in Sao Paulo. 

The smooth and warm tunes are hopefully going to help everyone to survive the cold winter here in Europe and everywhere else around the world.

Gregory Anthony Isaacs (15 July 1951 – 25 October 2010)[1][2][3] was a Jamaican reggae musician. Milo Miles, writing in The New York Times, described Isaacs as "the most exquisite vocalist in reggae".[4] His nickname was the Cool Ruler.[5]
International stardom seemed assured in 1978 when Isaacs signed to the Virgin Records offshoot Front Line Records, and appeared in the film Rockers, in which he performed "Slavemaster".[6] The Cool Ruler (which became one of his nicknames) and Soon Forward albums, however, failed to sell as well as expected,[6] although they are now considered among his best work.[8] In 1981, he made his first appearance at the Reggae Sunsplash festival (returning annually until 1991), and he moved on to the Charisma Records offshoot Pre, who released his The Lonely Lover (another nickname that stuck) and More Gregory albums along with a string of increasingly successful singles including "Tune In", "Permanent Lover", "Wailing Rudy" and "Tribute to Waddy".[9] He signed to Island Records and released the record that finally saw him break through to a wider audience, "Night Nurse", the title track from his first album for the label (Night Nurse (1982)).[9] Although "Night Nurse" was not a chart hit in either the UK or US, it was hugely popular in clubs and received heavy radio play, and the album reached #32 in the UK.[10] This success for Isaacs coincided with drug problems with cocaine which saw him serve a six-month prison sentence in Kingston in 1982 for possession of unlicensed firearms.[9][11] Isaacs claimed that he had the weapons only for protection, but it emerged that this was his 27th arrest and that Isaacs had become involved in drug dealing and had become addicted to crack cocaine.[11] He celebrated his release from prison with his second album for Island, Out Deh! (1983).[9] Isaacs was featured in the 1982 documentary Land of Look Behind.
Isaacs' drug addiction had a major impact on his voice, with most of his teeth falling out as a result.[11] Isaacs said of his addiction in 2007: "Drugs are a debasing weapon. It was the greatest college ever, but the most expensive school fee ever paid – the Cocaine High School. I learnt everything, and now I've put it on the side."[11]

The last mix with Beres Hammond and focusing on pure lovers and more on the bright side of life. Many songs on this mix have been number one on reggae charts and this mix also continues some of his most voiced on dubplate. "Groovy Little Thing" and "Can't Stop A Man" are fantastic tunes but this four mix serie of more than 150 tunes by Beres Hammond proves that there are way more to voice on dubplate! "They Gonna Talk" was released on 12 inch as "Wonder What The People Say" 1999 and might be Beres most popular tune ever. Many songs here have been a favourite for a certain person or sound. Dicky Trisco – Brasilian Beats Mix

Big thanks to Gouranga for asking me to do this special mix. They asked for a themed mix. So I decided to do a blend of Brasilian Beats as I realised that I had been learning about the wonderful music of Brasil over the last five years by playing at events and festivals there, in particular at the amazing Mareh festival in Bahia.  Along the road I have met many wonderful people, visited some stunning places, had a lot of good times and made some lasting friendships. There have also been a few hangovers too I must admit. This mix is about them and dedicated to them all.

Now first thing I have to confess is that I am no expert on Brasilian music. This is the story of a learner’s journey into the music and the people who have influenced and guided me. For me music is all about people and relationships. People are what brings music into your life, brings it alive and gives it significance. I could say that in my life music has meant people, and people has meant music. 

I have had many amazing guides on my journey into Brasilian music and the influences of all those people are scattered throughout this mix – people like Joutro Mundo; Selvagem; Ray Mang; Eddie C; Balako; JKriv; Pete Herbert; Guga Roselli; Joakim; Carrot Green and not forgetting the amazing collector Undomundo from Istanbul who sent me my first bundle of Brasilian music way back then. I am proud to call of these people my friends as well as my guides (especially on dark nights).

Most of these people have also contributed in one way or another to the Barefoot Beats label, which has been all about spreading the word about great Brasilian music through DJ-orientated reworks. In fact, many of those reworks are at the heart of this mix.

Throughout the whole process of gathering the music and mixing it together on the decks in my studio, I was filled with joy and memories – drinking whisky and listening to new music in the heat of the day in Bahia, searching for records on stalls in Downtown Rio, playing on boat parties in Boipeba and on rooftops in Sao Paulo and the thrill of playing to 3000 people in a warehouse in the port of Rio. All music lovers need to keep refreshing their approach and keeping the buzz alive. I got my buzz in Brasil!

I hope you enjoy the journey and the music. I know I have loved finding it and putting it together. And please dig deeper into the music of Brasil, the country and its fantastic people. You will be rewarded with similar memories, friendships and good times.

And massive thanks to Gouranga for hosting the mix and encouraging me to pull it all together.

"The Lonely Lover" Best Of Gregory Isaacs Part 1

The best of Gregory Isaacs Part 2 leads up to when Gregory Isaacs was called ”The Cool Ruler” partly due to an enormous popularity in Jamaica late 70’s and early 80’s. But also because of his cool laid back style which shines through in songs like the wonderful ’Special Guest’ or the erotic ’Cool You’ and in big hits like ’Mr. Brown’. The later is a well known plot in his songs where he takes the richer daughter out whatever her parents say. How music defeats poverty and hunger for a while is another common theme. In ’John Public’ he announces that he really got something special going on with the starting line ”she was between 18 and 21…” Well age ain’t nothing but a number! 
’A Riot’ deals with Gregory Isaacs early time spent in jail, a heavy biting tune with a lot of rage and threats towards the jail system. ’Poor And Clean’ is my favourite tune and a typical left wing tune where he states that being poor is better than living rich in corruption. Heard it first almost 30 years ago but I still listen to it 3-4 times in a row. 
For me this list of songs are the best reason in the world to listen to reggae from the late 70’s. It just ain’t getting better than songs like ’One More Time’ or ’Border’!

Starts out with what might be the best lovers rock tune from the period. Maybe Mos Def thinks the same when he layed the lyrics ”…she walked away smiling singing Gregory Isaacs like, if I don't if I don't have you…” Maybe singers like Tenor Saw, Dennis Brown, Sugar Minott or Barrington Levy were more important for the rub a dub-period but Gregory Isaacs probably did the biggest song with "Night Nurse". Even though my personal favourite here is this later take of "Once Ago". "Can't Give You My Love Alone" has always been one of the tunes that I gotta play when it's vinyl night. The mix and this period in Gregorys career ends with rougher tunes which reflects his harder life. I read somewhere that he walked the streets in Kingston with a weapon hidden under the coat and robbed people of their drug money. And yes, I read it before I watched The Wire…
