Italian sound artist Marco Shuttle debuts on Astral Industries with AI-39. Alluring and evocative, ‘Sonidos y Modulaciones de la Selva’ is a journey deep into the Amazon rainforest, seeking to capture its power and vastness, but also a rumination on the problem of its impending destruction.

In this album Shuttle sees the continuation and further ripening of an ongoing creative process, utilising both audio and visual documentations as source material. On this occasion most of the field recordings were taken in the Tupana Arü Ü nature reserve in the Amazonas region of Columbia, between Leticia and Puerto Nariño.

For the compositional process Shuttle employs a distinctly minimalist approach, achieving highly rich and articulate soundscapes with relatively little. Painting with an almost impressionistic stroke, the depth of imagery is underpinned by a strong experimental leaning and a sophisticated musical language.

Within its wild freeform, the seamless interplay between nature and the machines sees them merge into a mysterious dance - a liquifying sequence of scenes that shimmer with flora, fauna and the unmistakable aliveness of the jungle. A procession of sputtering and cavernous pulsations, sprawling biologies and hidden mysteries, the jungle as an entity, a spirit, begins to emerge. With all its peculiarities and strangeness, it reveals a world of seeming chaos, yet underneath it all a thread of something innately conscious.

Although it could be considered a form of sound diary, the scope spans much further than a standalone creative work. Within its intoxicating montage of shifting forms, ‘Sonidos y Modulaciones de la Selva’ stands as a sonic ethnography, and a contemplation on time, space, and our evolving relationship with nature.

Ongoing large-scale logging, agriculture and infrastructure projects are leading to significant deforestation in the Amazon, and continues to threaten biodiversity, the global environment and the livelihoods of indigenous communities. Part of the proceedings from this release will be donated to Amazon Watch (amazonwatch.org), a nonprofit organisation that works to protect the rainforest and advance the rights of indigenous peoples in the Amazon Basin.

@marco_shuttle traverses deep into the labyrinthine heart of the rainforest in @astralindustries’ latest extended listening journey. Channelling the spirit of the Amazon, the two extended tracks of Sonidos y Modulaciones de la Selva unfold as an untamed ecosystem, with ghostly birdsongs echoing across brooding, minimalist instrumentation.

Noss was created during a creative production challenge in January 2025. The then over 180 members of Aedi were invited to make a track in mono.

All submissions were gathered in an anonymous playlist and voted for by everyone in the community. The release title and artwork underwent similar democratic processes.

Then, another step was revealed, where the winning contributors were asked to make a stereo version of their track. This way, we explored and learned from both limitations and possibilities.

PREMIERE: Mitra - Endstate Becoming [IO Records]

Une immersion sonore durant 7 jours au Phare de Cordouan, situé en pleine mer, à plusieurs kilomètres de la côte Atlantique.
Départ de nuit un vendredi de février 2023. Nous rejoignons le phare dans la navette fluviale, avec l’équipe du bateau et les deux gardiens, qui relèvent le binôme sur place depuis 15 jours.  Aux premières lueurs du jour je n’en mène pas large quand il faut enfiler le wader, tenue étanche indispensable pour se mettre à l’eau et marcher du bateau jusqu’à l’entrée du phare. Une dizaine de mètres, pas plus, mais avec de l’eau jusqu’à la taille et en portant son matériel à bout de bras. Rien de plus banal pour les gardiens, qui échangent quelques phrases et accolades avec leurs deux collègues sur place depuis une quinzaine,  avant de se séparer. 
Nous voilà arrivés, isolés sur le plateau de Cordouan jusqu’à la prochaine relève dans 7 jours. Ma première impression est le calme et la sérénité qui règnent. Le roi des Phares, comme il est surnommé, nous domine de toute sa splendeur et le brouillard présent ce jour-là ajoute une touche mystique.
Durant cette semaine je vais avoir la liberté d’arpenter de long en large les lieux. Ici, la notion de temps change et l’on vit au rythme de la lune. Je marche de longues heures sur l’estran, plateau rocheux et sablonneux,  découvert seulement à marée basse. Je capte le fracas des vagues de l’océan au loin, les vaguelettes qui viennent s’échouer le long de la digue, les cris perçants des goélands et les piaillements des tournepierres. Cette quiétude est seulement perturbée par quelques rares passages d’un avion militaire. Mais le son le plus caractéristique de ce lieu est pour moi celui des balanes. Ces crustacés marins fixés au mur d’enceinte extérieur du phare, présents par milliers, et qui produisent un son très particulier (à écouter entre 7m20s et 7m50s). 
A marée haute, entouré par les flots, j’enregistre depuis les toits terrasses le déferlement des vagues, le bruit du vent qui s’engouffre dans les moindres interstices du phare et produit d’étranges résonnances. Je monte et descend les 301 marches qui font résonner mes pas et admire le coucher de soleil  depuis la salle de la lanterne, le point culminant du phare.  
Cette expérience unique et hors du temps,  j’ai souhaité la retranscrire sur une écoute immersive de 10 minutes. Je souhaite qu’elle puisse vous faire voyager et apprécier l’atmosphère de ce lieu magique.
