“Divergence” explores the tension between space and sound induced by their manipulated representation: sounds alter, calibrate and form space while simultaneously the sound is formed and manipulated by the space it is placed in. The album is based on pure sound sources such as sine waves and white noise. These sounds are physically manipulated and destroyed by the use of tape in order to form pulses, interferences and new wave forms. These manipulations create a divergence between the perception of sound and space: real and digital space interacting with pure and altered sound sources. The result is an intense sensory reaction and heightened spatial awareness through four movements.

NTS Radio's 'Unthinkable' w J.G.Biberkopf, Renick Bell + Ling December 5 mix

Here's a riff on the Make Noise Maths "Bouncing Ball" patch. It starts and ends dry, with only the bouncing ball patch in the mix. As the patch progresses I introduce delay (MOAR BOUNCE!), reverb, and filtered harmonics to emphasize the space between the bounces.

This strikes me as somewhat futuristic sounding in a sentimentally retrograde sort of way. Perhaps what the world of possibilities may have sounded to Bucky back in the 50s and 60s. I can't think of him without thinking about his domes and my own set of magnetic Bucky Balls. The balls are what inspired the basic concept of my contribution, and his domes are what provided me with additional sonic architecture to explore ... tracing out paths of possibility. Having seen a few retrospectives of his work, and hearing a few interviews with him, I get the sense he was incredibly playful. And it's in this one area I wish I could have produced something a bit more smile inducing. I feel this piece would likely be too sterile and cold to really capture his attention. It seems to me that he'd be more interested in something more obviously human and organic.

Bucky Fall (disquiet 0226)

I am always pleased to see morse code mentioned in the challenge. I started with the sketch which I have used for the image of this track and the moved to SuperCollider to make the track and then Reaper to edit it the recording down to a minute. This one is based on the rhythmic parts of the morse code [1,1,1,1,0,0,1,1,0,0] and I used weighted choose to control if a sound was made or not, this was a chance element. First the sounds where made and then time was spent playing with different rhythmic timing to see what works best. This one turned out as a big nod to Ryoji Ikeada, who's music I really enjoy and love. ENJOY!

After her appearance on the 130701 anniversary compilation alongside Hauschka and Max Richter, Warsaw based cellist/ composer Karolina Rec is releasing her debut album with the label shortly under the moniker Resina. Re-imagining the folk music from her Polish roots, the eponymous release is also determined by her love of landscapes and nature. Citing further influences in experimental rock bands, electronic music and the music from Werner Herzog, she sounded like the perfect host for our antidote to Monday's selection. Präsens Editionen present 'Noméri – Tere', the latest release from Lumisokea’s Andrea Taeggi (aka Gondwana). This latest release is the culmination of a six-months period of research. Including residencies (at EMS Stockholm among others), recordings and composition carried out throughout 2017. The word ‘research’ is apt here because Taeggi, and Lumisokea’s work more broadly with Koenraad Ecker, takes an holistic approach to sound. Their pieces are almost like essays on the metaphysics of music, exploring the possibilities of electronic and acoustic sound design.

When we spoke to Taeggi last year, we talked about his fascination with tunings, and specifically La Monte Young’s The Well-Tuned Piano. “His [La Monte Young’s] ability”, Taeggi told us, “to make complex music from simple elements, which sound special in and of themselves, is something which inspired in me a general fascination with minimalism.” This new release seems to tap into this idea, toying with synths that sound ever so slightly bent out of shape. There are also some exuberant polyrhythms on this record, as well as the extraordinary production trickery that one would expect.

Premiere: Andrea Taeggi - Stomata Speech [Präsens Editionen]

The music on this record was made using a vast array of rare analog machines Andrea had the chance to work on at the Willem-Twee synthesis studio in Holland (built with the iconic Studio di Fonologia RAI as a blueprint). Most of the percussive sounds come from an Analog Computer, which has been rarely used only as a music instrument (its main purpose was flight simulation). In fact, during the Cold War times it was also used as measurement tool by civil engineers and even by the army. 
To my knowledge, very few artists have given a new context to the such device, which I have found absolutely unique-sounding and gave me enough inspiration to compose a whole new album focused on it. 

At present, no one has ever officially released music recorded at the Willem-Twee synthesis studio.

The music on this record further explores cyclical, minimal and hypnotic concoctions – a particular  investigation focused on unusual rhythms that Andrea had already started on his well-received ‘Mama Matrix Most Mysterious’, released on Type in 2015. Think walls of subfrequencies, snappy rollercoasters of the mind, labyrinths in hyperspace & snakes eating their own tails.

Zimní Král means “Winter King” in Czech and was the epithet given to Frederick V Elector Palatine (king of Bohemia), the last of a legacy to actively support alchemy as a means of studying reality, the self and their inter-reflections.
