Disquiet Junto Project 0084: Quotidian Thread

This is a contribution to the Disquiet Junto, a weekly set of exercises based around creative restraints. This week, the exercise was to take two field recordings, find a relationship between sounds within those recordings, and morph between them.

I didn't have time this week to make new recordings, but while going through some made earlier this summer I found two different recordings of birds: the first is an unknown bird making a fast clicking call while being aggressively pursued by a group of crows. This one, intended to be the noisier recording, was taken in my backyard, so there's some street sounds.

The second recording is from a bird bathing in the pond in my garden. I had left my field recorder next to the pond to record the bullfrog, and accidentally got this recording of a small blackbird flapping its wings to splash water onto itself. This serves as the 'quiet' recording as set out by the exercise.

What's interesting is that the frequency of bird making its clicky call was about the same frequency of the bird bathing itself - and each instance was roughly the same length.

I isolated both sounds, removed the background noise as much as possible (couldn't get the high frequency bird calls in the background out) and left a few other noises in for interest, and faded between the two sounds. I didn't add any effects or alter the recordings, except for a bit of reverb on the isolated sounds so that they didn't sound dry.

Back again from vacation and ready to participate in the Junto...I decided to use 2 of the recordings I collected while on vacation. The first and noisy recording is from Keflavik airport waiting at the gate for boarding. I cut out the sound of heels walking by and looped (and faded) that into the next sound which came from an ambient recording within the exhibit of Nick Cave at our local museum. The repeated sound of a chain came from a video playing in the gallery. A little eq and mastering - done

*Disquiet Junto Project 0084: Quotidian Thread*


This week’s project involves field recordings. It entails the process of connecting
two brief recordings of everyday sound. The connection is made by locating an
element within each of the two recordings, and then creating a transition from one
to the next. The finished track should be a maximum of 60 seconds long. As always,
it is greatly appreciated if you can describe your decision-making in the text that
accompanies your uploaded track.


The steps are as follows:


Step 1: Record two brief field recordings. One should be fairly noisy and the other
relatively quiet.


Step 2: Listen closely to both recordings and locate a useful 10-second segment in
each. Trim the two 10-second segments.


Step 3: Listen closely to the fairly noisy 10-second segment, and in it locate a
single sound that is prominent enough to be isolated.


Step 4: Listen closely to the relatively quiet 10-second segment, and in it locate a
single sound that is prominent enough to be isolated.


Step 5: Develop an original composition that is structured as follows: The first 10
seconds are of the noisy field recording. During the final second, the noisy field
recording should slowly fade out. As it fades, the one sound you have elected to
isolate in Step 3 should continue playing. After the rest of the recording has faded
away entirely, that one isolated sound from Step 3 should slowly transform into the
sound that you elected to isolate in step 4. Once the transition from the Step 3
isolate to the Step 4 isolate is complete, you should fade in the 10-segment of the
relatively quiet field recording.


Step 6: You are now done. 


Deadline: Monday, August 11, 201

 at 11:59pm wherever you are.


Length: Your track should have a duration of between 30 and 60 seconds.

First thing to say this is the first time I have been any where near the upper time limit. 

The sounds I used were my initial ones which came to mind when I read this weeks email (after changing my mind and not liking it, then on a suggestion changing my mind back to original idea), I used Audacity to edit the files and Ableton to sequence the track.

Disquiet Junto Project 0050: -.......--.-..-...-

For the morse code I used SuperCollider to generate it. Dash is pink noise with a "square" envelope which is varied between 0.03 and 0.07secs long, dot is a very short sine envelope. The spacing between each sound has a varied length to give it some movement, there are general minimum times.

This was then moved in Ableton Live mixed and the other sounds added.

I found this one really hard and have struggled with it, but here it is.

Method: 
1. End of the cat in the ocean, which went into SuperCollider, this code cuts it up and replays it in a random order with different samples left and right.

2. The intro of broken robots, this went straight into Ableton live and was messed up in there.

3. A 2.17 second sample from broken robot, this went into SuperCollider and I used code to cut it up into micro-sounds and to also generate the beat track.

All this went into Ableton where is was arranged and fx's applied.

Question: What if I cut Re into 3 second sections, let the software re-sequence the sections into a new order, shape with a sine envelope and put through a reverb and delay effect (with varying delay time and amount)?

With this one I wanted to create not just a rhythm track but have some texture in it, I used only Ableton Live and its built in effects.

Sound was recorded with a contact mic.
