I'm so excited to share my latest single, Save the World. I'm really proud of this song and hope it reaches the people who will connect with it. I wrote it many years ago but didn't have the capacity to produce it at the time, I've learned a lot about production and this final version is mostly my own work, with some extra help from a very talented co-producer (Hattie Murdoch) who also mixed and mastered it to perfection. 

I hope the song conveys a message of hope in darker times, and that those who are often made to feel less than (or too much!)...the artists/thinkers/dreamers, the sensitive souls, people who see the world a little differently...are just the people we need to save the world. xx

Gone Like Smoke

It began with a slightly different guitar tuning and an impulsive Send.

It's easy to fall victim to ascribing special meaning to innocuous, random events. Especially with hindsight. And especially when something works out great. And, when it doesn't. But let's not go there, these are positive liner notes, after all.

That said, the song you are hopefully listening to right now, our new single Say It Again, is one of those special ones that seems to have appeared from out of nowhere, to quote a great Faith No More song that we covered in 2023. Even before the previous SineNomine single The Vault had been released Jeff had written and demoed a number of songs based on what he called a semi-open D tuning on an acoustic guitar. The demos were simple voice memos and were never meant to be anything other than rough outlines for potential future SineNomine tracks. Using an acoustic guitar on what were surely to become massive, dark electro songs was certainly not on Jeff's mind. In fact, had he demoed the songs the way he usually worked, on the computer, building the track from the ground up using midi sounds, things would certainly have turned out differently. Sometimes being pressed for time can be a good thing. 

There is something special about the stark simplicity of a songwriter performing a newly written song by themselves with just the sound of household appliances for special ambience. The song and performance either speak to you or they don't. If there's nothing there, you don't have the option of saying "Love that synth pad in the prechorus" or "Awesome vocal harmonies" even though they may well be there just to paper over how boring the lead melody is. Luckily, Em heard something in Jeff's demos and suggested a different approach for the next single. What if, instead of smothering the soundscape with everything and the kitchen sink, the focus was squarely on the song? And, what if the acoustic guitar became a part of the core sound? What if less was more?

Suffice to say we love Say It Again and the new SineNomine sound. And it would be so tempting to say it was meant to be and everything flowed naturally and it was so magical and the song basically wrote itself. Well, it wasn't and it didn't. It's not just the innumerable hours Em put into the production to make sure it only has exactly what's necessary and nothing more, it's also the decades of trial and error, of learning the craft of how to make a song come into being. And it is, most crucially, about trust and honesty between human beings. 

Still, it all began with a slightly weird tuning and a lazy Jeff who couldn't be bothered to record a proper demo and instead sent Em his crappy voice memo. 

This is the sound of the future that's built on the past. SineNomine welcomes you to stick around for the ride.
