Leigh Toro has been producing music for the past twenty years.  Back in the day he recorded under the guise of Flotel and released works on the excellent Expanding Records.  More recently he has been recording under his own name and has had albums out on Eilean Records and Handstitched.  We are excited here at Rural Colours to bring you his latest work Layers of Ash, an album of frayed granular resonances.

Layers of Ash started life as a series of short improvisations which were then woven together to create more developed pieces.  Leigh tells us that he is currently producing longer form pieces of music that explore the textural qualities of digital distortion, bit reduction and resonance. He enjoys exploring the balance between the harsh noise and more subtle delicate sounds and how that balance can evolve over a longer period than he has worked on before.

In 2018, Merck is celebrating its 350th anniversary. The theme of their celebration is “Always curious - Imagine the next 350 years.” This winter i took up their challenge and collaborated with 6 human beings in utero. Working with sonographer Rick Miles, i went about scanning the participants who ranged from 13 to 32 weeks gestation. This was followed by a process of sonifiying the data we collected, using the human movement to generate sound within a given set of parameters. Based on this material, I composed two pieces of music for an ensemble of classical musicians. 16 weeks - also available for free download on the poratal and this piece. Ode to the Future, is based on melodies generated by all the participants. Here i composed freely, taking inspiration from not only the data but the experience of the collaborative process, the privilege i was afforded by the generosity of the parents involved and the experience of working with such a great team of musicians and scientists. Along with the compositions i wanted to visualise my process: (ultra) sound - picture - data - music - picture. i created a sound and light sculpture, one that can be performed, inspired by the ripple tanks of my school days. The first time i remember 'seeing' sound. The acrylic, glass and light sculpture, is filled with water, becoming an instrument for gestural waveform play.

With breathtaking, rhythmic drumming and adept production driving the various moods, Timeslips emerges from greater live performance and carefully constructed compositions. The brittle skittering mallets of “Exaptation,” raucous guitar of “Debris,” and processed trumpet of “Vessel” add new timbres to their existing palette of jazz drums, melancholy piano, throbbing cello and swirling glitched ambience. Mostly recorded in a single day, just before guitarist Sia Ahmad left the band, only the bravest, most intense moments from the original session remain intact on Timeslips. The tonal rumble of a 100-carriage coal train winding through New South Wales’ Bylong Valley signals the album’s slow close, recalling Tangents’ earlier references to the Australian environment on New Bodies and Stateless.
