In 2008 double bassist/singer-songwriter Nat Baldwin released Most Valuable Player, an album that led Pitchfork to say "…he brings fierce performances to these polished compositions."  Now 5 years later, Western Vinyl is proud to be releasing the original demos from Most Valuable Player, which were recorded in 2005 and 2006.

The demo album, titled Dome Branches, features Nat's bandmate from Dirty Projectors, David Longstreth on guitar and electronics, Djim Reynolds on guitar, Nathan Horton on drums, Tim Keiper on drums, Matt Bauder on Clarinets, Jessica Pavone on viola.  Throughout these demos, there's a remarkable raw energy stemming at least in part from the fact that Nat hadn't performed any of the material live yet, and Longstreth hadn't heard the songs before, so his guitar parts were made up on the spot.

After studying avant-garde jazz and improvisation with jazz legend Anthony Braxton, Nat Baldwin started writing songs featuring double bass and vocals.  In 2005 he joined Dirty Projectors.  In addition to his work with Dirty Projectors, he has performed on Grizzly Bear's Sheilds, Vampire Weekend's Contra, and Department of Eagles' In Ear Park.  In between touring and recording with Dirty Projectors, Nat made time to record his 2011 album People Changes, an album that led Pitchfork to say "…whether Baldwin is singing with his throat or his bow, there's a thrilling felling of freedom to it all." More recently, he's been writing, recording, and arranging songs for a new album to be released in 2014.  You can hear some of the new material live this September when Nat tours in the US and Canada.

NAT BALDWIN - "Look She Said"

In The Hollows is Nat Baldwin's followup to 2011's People Changes.  Despite his busy schedule recording and touring as the bass player for Dirty Projectors, Nat found time to write and record his most soulful and ambitious collection of songs to date.  After recording the initial tracks at Machines With Magnets in Pawtucket, RI, Nat recruited Otto Hauser for drums and percussion, and Rob Moose and Clarice Jensen to write string arrangements.  Discussing the album's production, Nat says "I wanted to achieve a consistency throughout that my past albums have lacked.  I wanted the strings to add to the mournful quality of the songs, weaving their way through the sonic terrain, providing emotional emphasis, but also leaving necessary amounts of space.  Albums by Nick Drake, Judee Sill, Joanna Newsom, Antony & the Johnsons, and Bill Callahan, to name a few, provided inspiration in balancing that intimacy with minimal, but powerful, adornments."   

Much of the album was written while Nat was training for a marathon at his home in Maine.  According to Nat, "I had a pretty rigorous and consistent routine of running/working out early in the morning, and working on music all afternoon/evening.  I also started reading obsessively during this time, as I wasn't moving around much after the morning marathon training.  Some of the songs were inspired by books I was reading, and some were inspired by my lifestyle."  Blending autobiographical details with fiction, the songs cover a wide range of topics including boxing, drowning, bodybuilding, target practice, will power, Steve Prefontaine, competition, separation, isolation, devastation, manipulation, conflagration, intoxication, and suicide. 

Immersive, athletic, and often profound, In the Hollows represents his clearest and most consistent album-length statement, melodically, structurally, and lyrically.  Nat explains that "I hope it is as unsettling as it is beautiful.  I want it to make people feel things they can’t describe."

In the wake of their 2011 album Strange Hearts, the three members of Secret Cities branched off in different directions.  Charlie Gokey delved into Roy Orbison's ballads about losers in love while becoming a civil liberties attorney in Washington, D.C. Alex Abnos locked in to New Orleans soul masters like King Floyd & Dr. John as he became a journalist in New York City.  And Marie Parker became a teacher in the band's spiritual home of Fargo, North Dakota.

Having met at band camp and on an internet message board, the trio had made music together for nine years without ever living together in the same city.  After recording two albums and a handful of singles via email, they decided it was finally time to enter a real studio where they could play and record together in real time.  They chose San Francisco's Tiny Telephone studio, where Jay Pellicci manned the controls for a week-and-a-half of the most spontaneous, democratic, and visceral recording of their lives.  They emerged with Walk Me Home, an album that finally reflects their live chemistry and their diverging lives and musical tastes.  Appropriately enough -- it took years of traveling in different directions for Secret Cities to make an album that brought them closer together than ever.

Nat Baldwin - A Good Day To Die

As an accomplished 12-string guitarist/composer, Alexander Turnquist was naturally alarmed when the ulnar nerve in his left hand seized up in 2013, but after a surgical procedure he gratefully started the process of learning to play guitar again. His recovery was cut short when not long after the surgery he was hospitalized with meningitis. Though his recovery is ongoing, and he continues to struggle with a weakened immune system and memory loss, he was inspired to soldier on, rather than being deterred by his physical struggles.

Turnquist's latest full-length Flying Fantasy confirms the idea that out of great hardship can come great art. As he wrote the material for the new album it became clear that his sensitivity had sharpened, his empathy magnified, and his sense of purpose blossomed. The unfortunate circumstances he endured ostensibly forced his metamorphosis from a remarkable guitar player to a truly great composer. Much like the butterflies that adorn the album cover, he seems to have changed form and taken flight.

The album opens with the sparse harmonics of "House of Insomniacs", which are soon joined by lush swells of vibes, cello, and even wordless vocals. On the tracks that follow, Turnquist continues to make use of this dynamic sonic pallet, even adding organ, piano, marimba, steel drums, violin, and french horn to the mix. From "Red Carousel", which was inspired by Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes, to the somber lilt of the love song "Wildflower", to the truly arresting title track "Flying Fantasy" which uses only 4 open strummed guitars and loops of damaged tape and wire recorders, every note of Flying Fantasy vibrates with life as Turnquist ushers us though his intoxicatingly colorful worlds of sound.

All Along

There's something timeless about Grace Lightman. Maybe it's that honeyed voice that ever-so gently tugs at your heartstrings. Perhaps it's those careful and considered nods to the iconic moments, faces and places of musical history. Or it could be the turn and twist of her songs, at once both familiar and fresh. Ultimately, it all adds up to be something unique, borrowing from, redrafting and bridging the then and now. 

Her debut outing 'Vapour Trails' is four and half minutes of pure, crystalline beauty. Calling to mind the delicacy of 'The Sensual World' era Kate Bush and the intricate arrangements of Judee Sill, it works around a simple piano line and aching vocal, building up into a squall of military drums, French horn and an overall sense of soaring, genuine intensity. There's something rare going on here; the kind of track that seems to grow and change every time you listen, that collects and respects the roots and branches of its making, but builds something totally new with and around them. 

Following a period fronting London psych-rockers The Hypnotic Eye, Grace Lightman found herself suddenly solo and keen to draw her influences and passions - the warped weirdness of Vincent Gallo films, the swagger and style of Debbie Harry, and the understated musical sensuality of Francois Hardy and Nico -  into something of her own. Armed with an agenda, Grace sought out a like-minded collaborator and found herself in the East London basement studio of producer PJ Pearson (Liu Bei). Bonding over a mutual love of the Twilight Zone and torch songs, the pair began creating a set of songs, the first of which was 'Vapour Trails'.

This is the single from my 2008 water-inspired album 'Divining' - I wrote, recorded and produced the album over three years, learning how to use Logic along the way.  'Written On Water' was played by Tom Robinson on BBC6 Introducing 'Hear the three years of perfectionism... A command of the keyboard reminiscent of Kate Bush, Tori Amos or Nina Simone'.
