Music’s power is in creating community, and this is the essence of Laurence Guy’s work. The London-based DJ and producer’s motto is ‘music to make you feel feelings’: whether that’s comfort, nostalgia, bittersweetness or melancholy. His sound has an unmistakable warmth while being squarely aimed at the dancefloor: samples fit into sprawling keys, and dusty drums thud under lush chords. Amid a string of EPs, Guy has released two acclaimed albums; 2017’s blissful house LP Saw You For The First Time and 2023’s Living Like There’s No Tomorrow, But Killing Yourself In The Process, gracing labels including Studio Barnhus, Ninja Tune, Shall Not Fade and more, now signed to Future Classic. He’s now armed with a stash of hip hop and filter house influenced dance tracks, like the Jamie xx-tipped ‘Hey Baby’ and the groove-laden ‘Most Perfect People (Are Mostly Not Perfect)’ that are already soundtracking people’s best life moments.

Astral Gray's otherworldly wall-of-sound vocals sit atop psychedelic Floydian grooves, characterised by wobbling synths and slide guitars straight from the 70s playbook. However, it quickly becomes clear that Astral Gray isn’t simply a nostalgia merchant. The slick modern production means it can stand next to offerings such as Weyes Blood or Father John Misty. Elsewhere, the acerbic lyricism is reminiscent of post-punk’s railing against modern themes like the environment and tortuous evaluation of the self. At its core the introspective celestial soft rock unfurls like an early autumnal evening, leading the listener somewhere equal parts familiar and entirely from the beyond. Sharing stages with the likes of Sugar Candy Mountain, Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek and The New Eves has set Astral Gray well within the melting pot of the Brighton music scene.
