My tribute to David Bowie at Igloofest:

It’s Friday afternoon, January 15th, and I’m in my studio since this morning in order to finish up a track that I really want to play at Igloofest tomorrow night, for the 20th anniversary of my career. It’s a very big event for me, it’s not everyday that I get to celebrate 20 successful years of career in such a huge festival like that one. So I want to make sure this track sounds perfect for tomorrow, but I also want to make sure it’s finished and sent out because just two days after Igloofest I’ll be leaving for Australia and I don’t want to leave with my head filled with “all that stuff I gotta finish when I get back” type of thoughts… And what if I just never come back! LOL!

So while I’m working in the studio I get a text message from Michel Quintal, one of the founders of Igloofest/Piknic Electronik. He randomly texts me regarding David Bowie, saying he doesn’t think he’s been THAT affected from the death of an artist since Kurt Cobain passed away in 1994, and he was wondering if I thought of paying a tribute to him by maybe trying to find a remix of “Let’s Dance” that I could play tomorrow night. It’s really funny to ask a question like that, because it’s almost like saying if “I were a DJ, and if I were playing tomorrow, I would pay a tribute to Bowie with that song, but you don’t have to if you don’t want to…” :)  So of course I replied “Hey Michel! Funny you say that because I just bought the remix and I intended to play it tomorrow night! Wow, we really ARE connected aren’t we! (LOL!!!)”. No. Not really what I said. :) I replied “It’s an amazing idea, let me think about it and see if I can come up with something”. And right there I thought: “To hell other people’s remixes… I’ll make my own!!”

So I leave my track alone, I grab “Let’s Dance” and start a session with the song… I always knew I worked really fast when: 1- I’m under pressure 2- I have a tight deadline 3- I feel extremely inspired, and last but not least 4- Someone throws a challenge at me! In fact – for those who know me well – let’s put number 4 in the first position shall we? So, believe it or not, one hour later I was already done with my own remix of “Let’s Dance”! Not easy when you have no stems, and you have to work with the original track filled of sounds you wanna get rid of… But I’m so happy with the result!! And I’m so happy that Michel texted me about it, as he gave me this brilliant idea which I most likely wouldn’t have thought of, and had I thought about it I would have simply been discouraged by the LACK.OF.TIME. Well, thank God for challenges! :)

It’s really special for me that I’ll be able to celebrate my 20 years and also be able to pay a little tribute to this Big Artist who has influenced pretty much everyone I know in my life. I cannot wait to play it for you tomorrow night! And if I decide to post it for you before, so that you can listen to it while you get ready to come and party, then I’ll let you know… Stay tuned. ;)

With February's "Ronan Point" ep still wrecking the dancefloors and proving itself to be one of the labels strongest debut releases, Italian duo Macromism return to SCI+TEC with their latest smash, "District Zero." 

Having forged a more minimal path on their early recordings for the likes of Polar Noise and Zoo Technique, it was Mattia & Eugenio's 2011 releases for Inmotion and Carlo Lio's Rawthentic Music, that saw the duo explore the deeper side of tech-house, to great success. 

2012 kicked off at pace and saw Macromism feature their music on Break New Soil, Suara, Kling Klong, Kiara and of course their debut for SCI+TEC. Their latest for the label is lead by "District Zero," otherwise known as the dancefloor. Right, here, right now, on that very spot, the demonic vocal instructs us to move, shake, dance and get sweaty… And backed by the hypnotic beats and stabbing synth riff its impossible not to. 

"News From Barcelona" on the flip takes the far more straight up, heads down approach as it powers forward from the off. Piercing hats and a lurking bassline lay the foundation before we break for some Pathe news. Whilst the broadcast is more British than Spanish, Macromism's beats are firmly rooted in the mediterranean.

Why are the vocals turned down so low? This is the way we make Techno!

To mark the label’s 50th release Marc Houle gets right back to basics with two raw, stripped down future classics. What’s more both vinyl cuts, “Techno Vocals” and “On It” clock in at under six minutes meaning that this compact 12inch’s sound and message is going to be coming through extra loud and clear.

On “Techno Vocals” (as with all Houle productions) each sound is perfectly realised, commanding its own space with metronomic discipline. The rigid drum patterns, analogue explosions, regimented snare rolls, laser guided effects and delayed bleeps interact with supreme efficiency, while the arrangement is mapped out with cool, calculated intent. The result is a totally robust example of A-grade techno that’s really brought to life by the self-referential, pitched down vocal hook!

It’s well documented that Marc has more than a passing interest in 80’s electro, New Wave and retro computer games and these influences are somehow more apparent on Minus 50 than on his earlier solo releases or as part of Run, Stop, Restore. “On It” in particular will turn a few heads, making, as it does, a detour into previously unexplored territory. Revolving around a heavily filtered melodic bass riff, Houle punctuates the dry, upfront groove with a choice selection of rough, old school samples before dropping into a series of moody bass variations that give the track its distinctive flavour.

To complete the release, dub and accapella versions of “Techno Vocals” are also available as digital downloads offering amongst other things the chance to reformat the vocals over the original beats.

A collaboration between Items & Things label boss Marc Houle and Grenoble born techno/electro legend Miss Kittin, IT022 sees the release of “Where is Kittin?” a six track EP featuring two original tracks, as well as remixes from Dubfire, John Foxx & the Maths, and two further edits from Miss Kittin herself.

Building on the disco-not-disco, industrial and new wave influences of Houleʼs recent Items & Things long-player “Undercover”, the two originals on “Where is Kittin?” demonstrate the wide-ranging influences and potent pairing of the production duo: the title track a jagged hybrid of Houleʼs signature style and Kittinʼs deadpan vocal talent. In sharp contrast, A2 track “Black Star” presents an equally driven, yet slightly more ambient affair: its haunting synth lines, detuned claps and granular vocals a poignant reminder of the pairʼs production abilities both on and off the dancefloor.

High profile remix duties come from Sci+Tec Techno mastermind Dubfire, as well as John Foxx & The Maths: a recently formed musical project featuring electronic music pioneers John Foxx and modular synth experimentalist Benge. Dubfire furthers the main room potential of the EPʼs title track, with John Foxx & The Maths bringing the male vocal line to the forefront, turning the track into a roaring techno/electro-pop live hybrid.

With “Where is Kittin?” also acting as a succinct accompaniment to Miss Kittinʼs double album “Calling From the Stars”, out on 22nd of April via wSphere/Wagram, Kittin appropriately rounds off the package with a further two of her own edits, a pair of eloquently stripped-down digitally exclusive versions of the EPʼs two title tracks.

Marc Houle & Miss Kittin - Where is Kittin? (Original) | Items & Things | 2013

Established in the 90s, Misstress Barbara (word play between Miss and Stress) is a pioneering DJ/Producer and one of the first female superstar DJs who helped inspire future generations with her explosive Techno sets. Whilst headlining major festivals and events globally, there was a period in the ’00s when she was consistently voted inside of DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs.

Born in Italy, she moved to Canada at age 8. Curious and passionate by nature, she loves exploring new fields and reaching new goals. To name a few, she is a drummer, she has a glider and private pilot license, she graduated University in Communications/Cinema, she is a boat captain and sailing instructor, and she also launched her own bean-to-bar chocolate brand Barbon Chocolate, crafting everything by hand herself. A woman of many talents indeed.

But among all of her passions, music was always her main focus since the start of her remarkable career, which has earned her multiple accolades (2001 Best Montreal International Music Initiative Award / 2002 UK Underground Music Awards’ Best Breakthrough DJ / 2009 GAMIQ’s Best Electronic Album of the Year Awards and 2010 Canada’s JUNO Awards’ Best Dance Album of the Year nomination for “I’m No Human” / 2014 MTL Awards’ Best Montreal DJ, to name a few). Her extensive discography is found among the world’s best Techno labels, including her own, launched in 1999 under the name Relentless, which became Iturnem in 2003. Barbara Brown used to be her alter-ego used for her softer productions, but she now releases all her music under her main name, regardless of the style, as she did for her albums I’m No Human and Many Shades of Grey. This might confuse her most loyal techno fans, although they should rest assured that she will never stray away from her first true love: Techno.
