It’s no secret we love garage here at Slime. Whether its killer floor-fillers or ethereal two-step jams, there’s a little place in our hearts for them all. So we’re excited to be unveiling the first in an ongoing series of compilations centred around up and coming producers making their mark in the genre, from around the world. ‘Future Sound Of Garage’ looks to the producers that will be staking a claim to the sound in the near future. We’ve assembled ten of the most exciting producers coming up in the scene, who have each contributed an exclusive track for this release.

The sultry, low-slung groove of ‘Swerve’ from London-based producer A.Motion opens proceedings, full of sparse percussion and seductive vocals, before giving way to the bumpy rhythms of Finland’s Sleezy with ‘Wait’, bubbling over with retro basslines and snapping clicks. If you prefer that throwback style but brought bang up to date, then Londoner Urbani comes correct with ‘Dangerous’, packed to the brim with that nostalgic skip and swing strapped to a killer bassline – something it shares in common with the proceeding thriller from Leeds producer Bad Habit. ‘Trying Times’ floats in on subtle chords before detonating with expertly-clipped vocals and pulsating bass.

Dutch producer David Eliza weaponises his contribution ‘Scapegoat’ with supersonic beats and deadly basslines built around an insistent vocal sample that will have people stampeding to the dancefloor. Similarly, Yorkshire newcomer Jonah delivers a blistering mutation of garage with ‘Hazmat’, dark chords and staccato basslines swirling in the mix over a thundering 4x4 beat. Italian producer Bodwan delivers a warehouse classic in the making with an insistent piano loop and see-saw bassline, perfect for strobe-lit tunnel raves everywhere. If it’s epic you’re after then look no further than the near 8-minute odyssey from Blackboxx. ‘Levitate Me’ starts one way, building swirling chords, ethereal vibes and soaring vocals, before exploding into a roaring bassline monster that will make your chest rattle.

Macao-based producer Burnie delivers the penultimate track with the beautiful ‘Comet Dancing’, expertly built around a sonorous vocal and clipped two-step vibes. Deft touches of 808 and deep swashes of melody switch the style, keeping you guessing until the very end. Finally, Australian producer Greed closes the compilation in fine style with the gorgeous ‘Deep Blue’, replete with shimmering piano keys and hazy percussion – guaranteed to elevate your mind into a blissful state of being.

After the success of his Cutty Ranks and Curtis Lynch assisted  "Badness" earlier in the year, Marcus Visionary, Toronto's Jungle ambassador, ropes in Russian Dancehall sensation Steppa Style for his latest bashment ready, Ragga Jungle weapon, "Step Aside". 

With the release dropping just in time for Carnival,  Inner City Dance have commissioned two different, yet equally effective remixes from two fast rising Toronto based producers aimed squarely at the Garage dance floor. 

For the aptly titled "Back 2 97" mix, Lamont Dex channels the inspiration of late 90's Double 99 and 187 Lockdown, creating a warping dread bass, skipping Garage workout, replete with time stretched vocal snips and full Ragga chatting refrains guaranteed to illicit instant reloads.

Slime welcomes Cellardore to the label for his first full release on the imprint with the ‘303’ EP. Over the past few years the Bristolian producer has been tearing up clubs across the country and beyond with his energising amalgamation of garage, breaks and techno. Always experimenting with the defined boundaries of genres, he represents one of the freshest talents around in the current scene and proves that new and interesting forms of music can be generated from the template of garage.

‘303’ comes correct from the gate with a deadly garage jam that will be destined to destroy dancefloors everywhere regardless of genre affiliations. Dark and moody but packed full of funk, the gargantuan bassline propels the track forward with sinister intent across oscillating acid lines for something wholly unique within the UKG sound, merging elements of breaks and acid into the mix for a devastating kill-shot rhythm that will be a must for any discerning DJ.

‘Back In The Day’ sees the producer collaborate with two of the best garage MCs around in Marvel and Stavros for a nostalgic roll out that straps the flow of both lyricists onto a bubbling 2-step groove. Pure party vibes make this one sound like a forgotten classic from the golden era of UKG, but with fresh bars and a forward-thinking perspective bringing it bang up to date for the next generation of ravers.

‘Freedom’ brings fellow production powerhouse Mind Of A Dragon along for the ride with an incendiary collaboration that is an anthem in the making. Cinematic chords and soulful vocals create an ecstasy-drenched atmosphere that draws for the old skool rave sound before dropping into a future-proof garage roller that is close to perfection.

Though probably unbeknownst to him, Brighton’s Pavv released one of my all-time favourite UK Bass tunes with ‘Know Your Name’ around four years ago; a crushing, sludgy effort with a sharp drum arrangement, the song scratched all the right itches and made me an instant fan. Fast forward to now and I’ve been on something of a Garage rediscovery - through some cosmic coincidence it seems Pavv, at least in terms of his production style, is walking a similar path.



‘Who Dis’ is a surprisingly ambitious effort for it's short runtime blending Funky, Bass and Garage influences together rather beautifully and, although my review style is generally positive, I have to concede that ‘Who Dis’ stands out in particular as one of my favourite listens of the last 12 months. Whether this is a ‘right place at the right time’ scenario remains to be seen but regardless I expect some heavy rotation of this EP as the summer looms ever closer.

Kicking off with effervescent, eponymous Garage number ‘Who Dis’, Pavv plays with several vocal samples, key stabs and piano motifs and the end-product is a decidedly fresh arrangement reminiscent of Mike Millrain. The track absolutely glides through its five minute, twenty six second runtime and transitions easily into the next track on the billing ‘When You Say’. It is around this point in the EP, on my fourth listen through, where it dawned on me that the brilliance of this EP lies in its ability to capture all the energy of a sizeable set in just three tracks...
