"The birth of a music genre is often attributed to a few lucky rebels or musical geniuses who dared challenging the status quo and inspired thousands others in doing so. Lord Shorty’s re-invention of calypso music in the 1970’s was no different, changing the musical landscape forever. With his imposing height of almost 2 meters, Trinidadian born ‘Shorty’ was devoted to (musically) unite the African and Indian cultures, the two major ethnic groups on Trinidad & Tobago. By fusing calypso with Indian rhythms and instruments, or chutney music, he created an exciting new musical hybrid and called it Sokah. As a true Calypsonian, Shorty felt this new sound could well be the answer to Jamaica’s reggae that started overshadowing Trinidad’s calypso at the time. Little did he know that the energetic and syncopated off-beat drum rhythm had far more in store than that.

Sokah, now soca, stands for The Soul of Calypso. It drew its inspiration from many different musical genres such as reggae, latin and zouk which were also airing in Port of Spain and Bridgetown, as well as soul, disco and house ruling in New York, Toronto and London. This influence from different styles and places across the Caribbean, African and Indian diaspora played a big part in soca's growth and success, while popular artists such as Arrow, Machel Montano, Brother Resistance, Lord Nelson and Super Blue helped shape and popularize the genre further in the 80's and 90’s. Even more, it led to soca leaving its mark on new genres such as reggaeton, dancehall, afro house and even EDM. Once you start paying attention, you'll find the soca rhythm along with the steelpan sound everywhere, and rightly so.

Dozens of specific soca styles emerged too. From the early chutney and steelband soca to parang, rapso and many other so-called crossovers. These sub-genres were as much a display of soca’s malleability as it was attesting to its distinctive sound and artistic creativity of its makers. Soon, faster BPM’s started making their entry with Jump & Wave and a whole new generation of artists took the genre to global popularity with smooth R&B flavored groovy soca.

'Once In A Lifetime' is one of Talking Heads' most adored tracks and the 10-minute edit is a true homage to the timeless cut. Added percussion, elongated vocal segments and more hands-in-the-air moments than ever before, this is a remix that plays on its subtly. 

We've managed to secure a full stream of the extended vocal mix despite the fact it's a vinyl-only cut so you're in for a treat.

It's not trying to make the original better, it's merely showcasing what an incredible piece of source material it is, while making it workable for the club. Bravo we say, keep them coming.

You Love Me [Fantastic Voyage]

After their two acclaimed edits EPs, Mister T. Records are now joining forces with LA based producer @DJDuckcomb, to deliver a groovy selection of leftfield italo-disco cuts reworked for dancefloors.
One year after the release of their 2nd EP, tribute to Brazilian music, Mister T. records are now back with a 12” EP showcasing their love for obscure disco and Duckcomb’s amazing digging skills.
Famous as a record collector, Duckcomb has also made himself a name by editing forgotten jewels from classic disco to islands reggae. Part of both duos Sharegroove and Trap.Avoid, he’s been sharing his work and latest discoveries on his bandcamp and soundcloud for years and he has already released two EPs on Universal Cave and Pleasure of Love as well as edits on Cultures of Soul and Emotional Rescue.
He’s now joining Mister T. Records with a 3-track EP compilation of hard to classify, slow-tempo, disco edits. On the A-side, Duckcomb partnered up with his longtime friend and DJ partner  Dino Soccio, boss of California label Pleasure of Love, for a powerful rework of the German proto-house tune “Holidays”, with a new dancefloor oriented beat and emphasized tropical influences.
On the B-side, he showed his editing skills working on two obscure downtempo tracks with that recognizable late 80s melancholic atmosphere. By removing not danceable parts, building DJ-friendly grooves and removing unnecessary vocal parts, he managed to come up with a smooth italo ballad with acid accents on “S.O.S.” and a beautiful balearic new-beat jam on “King of a Beat”.
This record aims to be a tribute to the very special sound of the late 80s electronic music and to both the artist’s and label’s lifelong passion for obscure italo disco.
