The next instalment in UNITED’s series of releases sees London-based Real Tears team up with UNITED’s very own Moscow Legend for a menacing new grime EP. 

Real Tears’ ferocious track, ‘Paimon’, combines a fusion of dark elements to create a 145 BPM demonic ambience. The use of signature Real Tears sounds throughout the song remind you that despite the unmistakably grimey nature of the claps in the track, this is still Real Tears at his best. 

Moscow Legend’s ‘Everblasting Bass’ showcases exceptional sound design, consistent with the forward-thinking nature of his grime production. The track has already garnered considerable attention as a dubplate, receiving plays from General Courts, Boylan, Grandmixxer and Skee Mask. 

The unique nature of these two producer’s styles blends incredibly well in this EP, demonstrating UNITED’s enduring ability to produce collaborations that seamlessly represent the work of their Russian producers with that of established UK artists.

Across a varied back catalogue, Mr. Mitch’s Gobstopper imprint has primarily operated under the loose classification of Grime but has consistently tested its boundaries sufficiently in order to steer it clear of any real pigeon-holing. Previous releases have come from Social State, Bloom, Strict Face and Mr. Mitch himself and throughout, Gobstopper has remained a platform for talented oddballs to experiment to meritorious effect. 

Next in line is another auspicious talent from London: Tarquin. Having garnered support from the likes of Plastician and Mickey Pearce and having had tracks aired on Rinse and NTS, Tarquin steps up and marries with Gobstopper’s ethos in offering up 2 fantastically esoteric productions that meld elements from the gamut of UK Bass music with a degree of sweet melody that lends them perfectly to the changing of the seasons. 

‘Kid U’ kicks things off and uses pitch and envelope experimentation to layer darting vocal samples with whips, clangs and plucked strings that work together to build an allaying yet challenging recording. ‘Lost My Marbles’ then gets off to a pacy start. Claps on the 1, choked hats and an urgent synth tone rattle towards a plunge into halftime before discordant tones and nifty sampling decorate a baffling concoction that caps off another coup for Gobstopper and a fine addition to the catalogue.

@LastJapan’s ‘Exhale’ in its OG 2017 form – which, if you don't know, is all kinds of slick, cold to the touch and claustrophobic post-grime goodness – was one of our favourite tracks to release that year. So, it's safe to say we were pretty thrilled when a surprise new remix project landed in our inbox a few weeks back.

The new two-tracker features remixes from a pair of label long-timers. First up is Sully (@sullye64) with that, that (!) long-awaited reimagination before Circadian's own Escha(@eschacold)re-ups the track in his own warped and wonderful way.

Montreal-based producer & DJ Slick Shoota brings us Function, his debut LP and first solo release on the Teklife imprint. A native of Norway known for his renowned Oslo club night Ball Em Up, he’s been a member of the elite crew since 2015, contributing tracks to the label’s compilations such as On Life Vol. 2 and VIP Trax. Using a unique palate that combines both traditional footwork drums and eclectic otherworld sonics, this album expands on the signature sound he’s been brewing during the course of his career, celebrating his longtime love of the Chicago soundscape, with a healthy helping of UK rave, jungle, and vibes from other fast paced club realms.

Slick starts the record off with Hovercraft, a big burly mutant rap beat riding a glowing titanic wave of jungle subbass, with vicious hi-hats stabbing through the mix. Desire Path follows with hysterical horns cruising along a stampede of erratic Chicago percussion. A glitchy, malfunctioning computer meets drumline stomps on See Me Flex, resulting in a psychotic, yet psychedelic sci-fi soundscape. Ultra-distorted hardcore kicks open up Jellyneck, dropping straight into a dungeon of ghostly vocals and headlong toms. Warehouse 2K opens up the B-side with R&B chops and lasers floating on a charming cloud of pulsating pads. Mad doppler sirens loop around your head on Delahaze, as distant clangs and crashes fight an impatient, throbbing bassline. Classic rave atmospheres are met with Slick’s elegant sound design on MTL Hardcore, his ode to his adoptive city. The album closes off with Special Tek, channeling the signature quirky drum sounds of the late DJ Rashad over a pounding, fast paced house beat, a wonderful nod to the Windy City and its influential sonic culture.

Carving out his own sound from the legacies of Chicago, the UK, and other underground club hotspots, Slick Shoota has found his own recognizable voice within these realms of dance music, and this LP serves as documentation of that solidified voice. Years of studying the masters and immersing himself with their work has clearly paid off, and he’s respectfully taking these sounds he loves in exciting new directions. Bridging gaps both historical and geographical, Function marks a pivotal point in his career, and is clear evidence that Slick Shoota is vital member of the legendary Teklife family.
