‘Driftmachine Plays Marien van Oers’ is a parallel physical output to the concert ‘Massive Trance: Interpreted by Driftmachine,’ which was performed during the 2019 Minimal Music Festival in Amsterdam. The concert performed at Muziek Gebouw aan ‘t IJ as well as the album, takes its cue from a cassette produced in 1983 by the Dutch experimental composer Marien van Oers (1955–2013). The original cassette states Van Oers’ following intentions: “The basic idea of the performance is experiencing a constant repetition of sound (=rhythm), which can result in the spectator taking action through movement or getting into a form of trance.” His percussion based pieces are all but industrial; the self-built instruments and repetitive chanting aim to achieve a physicality that is closer to tribal music. Van Oers has mainly performed as his solo act, Het Zweet, which was active from 1983 to about 1988.
This interpretation of Marien van Oers’ music by modular synth duo Driftmachine is not a blind restaging of Van Oers’ original recordings, but instead actively reinterprets the piece on the level of its composition, performance, and mixing. Taking the piece’s ultimate aim of ‘attaining trance’ as a starting point, Driftmachine accordingly works towards a new coherence that features a repetition of organic syncopations by using two racks of modular systems.
The liner notes detail how this record came to be, analyze the early work of Marien van Oers, and places this project as a curatorial practice of Ongehoord label initiator Jeroen Vermandere.
This is the fourth release of the Dutch label Ongehoord. Previous records compiled material that had solely been released on cassette during the ’80s. ‘Driftmachine Plays Marien van Oers’ is the first album in a series which departs from released and unreleased cassette material, using it as a source of inspiration. Berlin based Dame Bonnet makes music influenced by post punk and cold wave and with a primitive and reverb-drenched production he creates a tragic dream for the listener to sink in to. The music has a sentimental feel to it but the pretentions are avoided thanks to the direct sound and the unremitting drums which contributes to give the tracks a forward momentum instead of a stuck in place-feeling.

Dame Bonnet makes sad club music with traces from the early eighties In England, a society ravaged by the cold individualism as a result to neo conservative politics - a time that resembles ours, where people gets categorized out of prejudice and the social welfare systems are uninstalled bit by bit in front of a sparser crowd of woke people. In Europe, now in the 2020s, a supposed dead ultraconservative monster is coming alive again and Dame Bonnets music makes the soundtrack to that process.

This release, Dame Bonnets first on Höga Nord Rekords, captures, though the songs are all instrumental, an unpleasant atmosphere in our time. The music has its roots in 1980s England but it fits perfect also for the cold present of 2020.

Closely trailing last year’s Space Techno EP, and his recent outing as Herrmman/Kristoffersen, Daniel Herrmann’s new album; Electric Field sees the return of Ransom Note’s favourite aviation enthusiast, Flug 8. If the upbeat, driving Space Techno acted as the lift-off, Electric Field sees Daniel remove his hand from the throttle, pull the shuttle into low earth orbit, sound tracking the cosmos as he watches from his porthole. We know there’s no sound in space, but if there was, we think it’d sound something like this.
Setting the tone for what’s to come, the album kicks off with Night Effect. Grainy drones and swirling soundscapes lay the basis for the track. Hard-panned, delayed melodies and restless low frequency percussion ricochet off of each other as they slowly intertwine and settle, making peace with their newfound trajectory. Next up is Arc to Time where morphing, guitar-like plucks cascade around the listener’s perspective, jostling for the limelight like some sort of intergalactic wind-chime, while lush pads and chords evolve to fill the background from the outside in. The epic Continuous Wave sounds like it was composed for the big screen. The meandering lead wouldn’t sound out of place on Hans Zimmer’s Interstellar soundtrack, all the while whirring leads sound like Herrmann might have actually sampled them from an astronaut’s respiratory system. Bubble Cell, characterised by generous servings of analog tape hiss, fizzes over the top of slow churning synth swells, placing you at the forefront of an otherworldly environment. Inhabiting some distant molten planet, he somehow finds tranquillity within the chaos. On the flip, Herrmanns’s Effective height pokes its head into unknown territories, as a ceaseless lead transmits repeatedly searching for a reply, only to be consumed by the vastness of space, becoming lost beneath sombre drones. Pulsing synth percussion lays a foundation for Polarizing as warped, hardly distinguishable vocodered vocals give way to overdriven, plucked synths sustained by lush, neverending reverbs. Driven by a jittering lead and soaring synth plucks, Side Band is the only track to feature anything remotely close to a conventional breakdown - as the track explodes into a crescendo, we hear distant, saturated, guitar-like licks far off. Closing out the project is Cosmic Noise, which as its name suggests is unsurprisingly the most experimental track on the album. Surges of noise and distortion serve up a stark reminder of our place in the universe as it chews you up and spits you out Sitting on the floor of his living room with a complete arsenal of vintage analog synths, Daniel builds each layer of his unique soundscapes, one continuous take at a time. With Alter Ego’s Jörn Elling Wuttke lending a helping hand on mixing duties, Electric Field might just be Flug 8’s most accomplished work yet.
