For Tom Blackwell.  Tom was a very active funk drummer on the Portland ME scene in the 80s and 90s. I played with Tom for about ten years until 2017 or so. We had a lot of fun. Tom's ability to write music is unusual for a drummer. Tom's compositions were always well thought out, fun, and interesting. He usually sang his songs too. Tom was also a first in class sound engineer. I had hoped to spend time learning sound from Tom after I retire. Alas, I'll be using a Quija board to get tips now.

I'll keep plugging away at this piece. I have to say, it felt like Tom had input. Maybe I don't need a Quija Board after all.

Here's the third track, "Kentucky Moonshiner". It's  loosely based on a traditional N. American folk song of the same name -- which is, in turn, based on the classic English language folk song, "The Wild Rover".

The traditional recorded versions of Kentucky Moonshiner are mostly either aggressive, dark, and hard driving, or (more to my liking) sparse and non-rhythmic. But despite the pesky illegality of this traditional trade, it is nevertheless a craft practiced in the bucolic valleys of the Appalachian Mountains -- one that requires knowledge, skill and patience. I tried to convey that sense of craftsmanship in this R2N version of...

KENTUCKY MOONSHINER

Well, I been a moonshiner for seventeen years,
spent all my money on whiskey and beers,
I go down to the holler and set up my still,
and I'll make you a gallon for a two dollar bill.

Then I go down to the tavern,
and drink with my friends,
no woman following me,
watching what I spend.

But I do love a pretty woman,
and how I wish she were mine,
her breath is as fresh as
the dew on the vine,

Kentucky Moonshiner - Return to Normal

2023 - For the past few months I've been working with Public Resource, a California based non-profit to release an extensive collection of older music for free use. In addition to audio, we'll be releasing the music as MIDI and musicxml. Last week we started posting a new featured piece every week on the Public Resource Soundcloud page (@PublicResource). Follow there, or look for frequent reposts here. It'll include classical music, pop music before 1927, ragtime, folk songs, and more. The main collection will be at the Internet Archive, and will be called the "Internet Jukebox". I'll post more about it as it grows.
