Haiku poetry and music.

Naviar Haiku is a music project in which artists are invited to make new music inspired by a weekly assigned haiku poem. Participation is free and there are no limitations in the songs’ length or genre.

Haiku is a traditional and short form of Japanese poetry consisting of three lines: it’s about moments of objective experience which lead to deeper considerations about life and nature. The juxtaposition of two images or ideas and the consequent creation of a gap in the imagery gives the reader (or, in this case, the musician) the chance to complete the poem with his/her own interpretation.

This project is about expanding the meaning of a poem beyond its words, and the active role of the reader in haiku poetry, unique in the literary realm, is what inspired this project.

The calm (Naviarhaiku 255)

This project loosely follows a theme of Circularity; all materials used have some significant circular quality. For example, each note of the Guzheng & Bonang is fixed to a binaural space so that the collective range resembles (from the performers perspective) the circular shape of a Cambodian Gong-Chime: Low notes situated to the left, mid-range at the front and high to the right. The title ‘Toys’ refers to the image of a wind-up toy that I attach to the mechanical sounding materials and gestures: an untuned Sitar, clock/metronome & Shepard tones. Auditory ‘illusions’ were also foundational to the circular theme. The following time marks indicate sections using illusions as compositional tools (not intended to trick the listener).

*The mix is a little quiet so you might want to up the volume more than your usual listening.

Robert Hayden (1913-1980) published his first book of poems, Heart-Shape in the Dust, in 1940.

Even though he was interested in African American history and often expressed his concerns about race in his writing, he didn’t want to be identified as a black poet. William Meredith wrote about him: “Hayden declared himself, at considerable cost in popularity, an American poet rather than a black poet, when for a time there was posited an unreconcilable difference between the two roles. There is scarcely a line of his which is not identifiable as an experience of black America, but he would not relinquish the title of American writer for any narrower identity.”

I am still looking, trying and experimenting, I really like electronic ambient for many years, but it only works as a live percussionist. In short, nothing is black or white:)
In today's hectic world I need quiet sounds and the vast majority of songs created at night, so are my compositions such as they are.

My tracks is based on the absolute freedom of the use of sound. Arises as if I painted a picture. In the head is the base, and then adding the details here and there.
As well as if I were his music told the story.
